Good morning,

A nice day yesterday, all except the part where we think Kylee killed a squirrel in the backyard. I did not actually see it, but we are pretty sure that is what happened. Ugh. I immediately took her into the basement and gave her a bath....not pretty. Poor John had to clean it up.

Lori, Your room sounds great. I bet Chester and Nilla were glad to see you! Can't wait for the pics. :)

Judy, I sure hope we can all get one more bike ride in before the winter sets in. Right now it is 35 here and there is a freeze warning until 10 am. I guess I need to finish putting away the pots, and stuff from the yard. We turned off the water and drained the hoses yesterday. You're right about winter....we are used to it, but it seems to get harder to take each year.

Valerie, you know, now that you mention it, I never tried a podcast though the BT in my car, only played them directly through the iPod with ear plugs. The ones I have on my iPod are running ones ( Coach to 5K)...and really no reason to play them through the car speakers....hmmmm....interesting. Maybe they are not BT capable?

Lynda, how was the movie?

Josie, here's to winning in LV!

We are going to a match today, need the practice for a trial in Eria Pa that we signed up for next weekend....

Take care,

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Drill Max (63:00).

Freezing here this morning and it sounds like tonight will be even colder. Oh well--it had to come. DH put our hanging baskets inside, so we can bring them out again later in the week when it's supposed to warm up.

Deb, Kylee must be pretty quick if she can catch a squirrel. Max never has any 'luck' with either squirrels or chipmunks. They seem to taunt him too. He's very good at voles and ground hogs, and DH doesn't mind if he catches mice as well.

The Martian was excellent. If any of you have seen Thelma and Louise, also directed by Ridley Scott, Mars looks like the Southwest a great deal in that film. I thought I would be on tenterhooks throughout the film, but there is a lot of humor in addition to the suspense of the rescue (when? how? in time?), and Matt Damon is just perfect for this role--believably competent and resourceful in the face of what looks like certain death. I did not see it in 3D because I didn't want to wear those glasses for 2 hours and 22 minutes, and ultimately, I don't think this film really needs 3D. It's a much more intimate film than, say, the Peter Jackson Hobbit trilogy. I give it a straight A, and that's saying something, because I wasn't sure I could stand another LONG film without feeling that some editing should have been done. Hard for me to believe, but Ridley Scott is 77 years old, and this film feels like it was made by a young man--a lot of wonder and optimism overall in its emotional tenor.

Valerie, I have podcasts from This American Life on my Ipad, and I just play them in the car. I loved Serial. Why not put the podcasts on your Ipad?

Deb we ride in winter close to freezing, sometimes even below 32. Ice is the main issue. dressing warm enough (but not too bulky) is trial and error. once you get pieces that work, it's fine. we use wind block tights, gloves, helmet cover, lots of ways to work it. surprisingly it's easy to overheat, so we steer away from insulated jackets and use thinner layers that block wind and that unzip. ice on the ground unforgiving. we don't ride if it's slippery. Not for everyone, though, and your climate is colder. we mountain bike a lot in winter, but its milder here with a lot of time in the 40's and 50's and usually no residual snow and ice to trip you up.
Our previous cat once caught a eastern gray squirrel and brought it to us, kicking. we made him drop it and he almost got into another battle. he was a very feisty kitty! the squirrel made his getaway but sure Puss would have killed it if we'd given him time. he carried it down the driveway a long way with the squirrel holding still, but not dead. weren't fox terriers used to catch foxes and other small rodents from their burrows? must be a genetic thing!

we got distracted yesterday, supposed to be wet but wasn't so we did outdoor stuff, cleaning up the cars, servicing the bikes. didn't get back to the ipod. In think we found what we did wrong. I dislike things in/ over my ears so never warmed up to ear buds or even headphones. we both want to listen to the podcasts so will keep working on the vehicle speaker set up.

Lynda, we downloaded This American Life...that's what we've been trying to listen to. cousin recommended also. I (again) admit to being stupid about play back..... ipads don't have speakers ... does it hook into the car system?
thank you for the movie review. I loved T&L. will put that on my queue. I'm trying to think of the name of the steve Jobs movie that was just released. I will probably watch it as it will no doubt be nominated for awards but Jobs sure sounds like a total jerk. I am maybe the only one who could not get thru the Hobbit trilogy.

My Ipad definitely has a speaker. It's on the long side on the bottom to the right. You just click the right side of it to take it off mute and lift the volume.

I wrote a long piece on T & L from a feminist perspective. I love that film.

Good morning.

Is it Monday already? The weekends still fly by, even in retirement.

Yesterday I did Cathe HIIT Back Shoulders & Biceps. I am so looking forward to the new ICE workouts!

It is so cold here, but I know this is nothing compared to what we will get in January and February. I think the old saying about your blood has to get thicker or something...ours is still too thin.

Lynda I am starting to doubt that Kylee actually killed the squirrel, but if she didn't do it, who did? It was just killed, and she was standing over it, but I would have thought she would have had more "evidence" on her. Oh, well, one of those mysteries I guess. Do you play your podcasts through the car speakers or use ear buds and the speaker from the iPad?

Valerie, I give you a lot of credit for doing anything in 32 degree weather! One of my biggest problems when doing anything outdoors when it is under 50 degrees is my nose running! 'nuff said about that. LOL. Yes, fox terriers were bred to catch ground vermin....like squirrels, rats etc. iPads do have speakers....that is why when I watch anything on mine, and John is reading, I have to use ear buds. see what Lynda said.

Hi to Josie, Judy, & Lori,

Late class tonight....some organizing in the basement today I think, not sure if I will want to go to the track this morning....it's 31 degrees right now...brrrr....

Going to look at the ipad immediately. I keep it in a case. I usually use driving and it's so slippery. too many people who dropped theirs. maybe there's a button I never noticed?....when I say I'm as dumb as a rock about electronics, I'm not exaggerating...
Deb, I don't mind 32. I have more way problems with heat. back in a bit.

Hi everyone

This morning I did Dancin' Abs (58:00).

Deb, sometimes we just listen to it on the iPad.

Valerie, do you have google on your iPad? If you do there is a microphone for asking questions by simply voicing them and you can get answers out loud from the iPad.

I am off to stay with a friend in ny the next couple days for a film festival.

Ttfn

Yes, there is a speaker on an ipad!!:rolleyes: I never realized this. I keep the slippery little devil in a case. it covers the volume toggle and the perforations over the speaker. since I use it mostly driving, I never looked for something I didn't know it had. yes, google on it too. never used voice commands. I am electronically challenged sometimes.... most of the time??. I don't do well with icons either, and would rather have word directions. the symbols never ever mean what I think they will. I did start playing This American Life and it worked fine here at home. will see if it works later driving somewhere.

Deb, animals die natural deaths too, maybe it had a brush with a car or a cat, was old, or fell out of a tree and ended up crawling into your yard to die. we have trouble with eastern gray squirrels( not native here) on our bird feeder and have shot more than one with a pellet gun. they don't always die immediately, but wander off to their demise. we would prefer to kill them quickly but using a "real" rifle is too risky.

I get a runny nose sometimes at first. it stops usually after a bit. I have more issues with heat..... if it's 80 degrees out, I'm unable to do much..... riding is maybe OK. I overheat easily and I don't sweat enough to cool myself. drinking more doesn't help. I'm biologically geared for cooler weather. o.

Good evening ladies!

It was so hard getting up for work today. We got home about 10pm saturday night and it was snowing a bit! Ugh! No workout today. Was so tired when I came home.

Sunday was busy unpacking and washing clothes. Seems like we had a ton for just the two of us. I did manage to do Cathe Live Total Body Cardio and Weight which was from this past Thursday's class. Was really god and just what I needed. I put on 5lbs while on vacation. I am ok with this as I thought it was going to be a few more. I ate so much crap!! Was worth it though. I'll post a few pictures this week.

Deb...I hope Chester never brings me a squirrel! You may be right that he did not actually kill it. Was really cold here too and will be for the next few days. Glad to hear this as I am leaving for the Cape Thursday afternoon for the weekend! It is my DS's bday and this will be our 3rd annual trip to the Cape. His GF comes too so this will be fun. I plan to make a reservation at the Brazilian Steak House for Saturday and my Step Son and his new wife (my Ex's son and my DS's 1/2 brother) will be joining us making a great night.

Valerie...wow that is really cold! Don't think I have ever bike when it was cold like that. I am sure you have all the proper clothing and equipment for it.

Lynda...omg!! Yes sooo cold this morning! Have a great time in NY. Are you in the city? Thanks for the review of The Martian. Can't wait to see it.

Judy...3 weeks left? It did seem to go by quick. Perhaps not for you though. :)

Josie...have fun in Las Vegas and hope you win big!!!!!

Have a great night all!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did STS disc 28, Chest & Back. Today I did an indoor bike ride.

Deb-I am so looking forward to ICE too! I will be so happy to be done with STS and to be able to start something new. I'm looking forward to getting back to Spinervals too. The Spinervals winter program starts in November.

Valerie-that's great that you ride outside when it's so cold. I know having the right clothes makes all the difference. DH and I have been accumulating winter riding clothes from REI so maybe this year we will actually get out there and do it. I must be biologically geared to hot weather as I've always been able to run and bike through the hottest summers. Winter is much harder for me to deal with.

Lori-Sounds like you had such a nice trip! I'm sorry you came home to snow :( STS has gone by rather quickly. Can't believe it's only 3 more weeks!

Lynda-Hope you have a great time in NY!

Hi to Josie!

Judy

I really don't change my clothing that much heavier. you need wind block material over all exposed parts, but not heavy puffy insulated gear at all. I use a helmet cover, windblock jacket (goretex) , heavier windproof gloves, leather shoes rather than nylon, and wind block tights. my undergarments are polypro shirts, I have one with a hood and zip up neck but it's thin. another long sleeve over. it's two thin layers under the hard shell jacket. mostly it's a matter of blocking the wind from blowing thru what you're wearing. you generate plenty of heat if it isn't "blown away". breathable stuff so you don't get wet from perspiration.
we ride into the 30's as long as it isn't icy because there's no way to deal with ice/ skinny tires. a "little" patchy ice with a mt bike is OK because the surface is usually rough. wool is fine as an under layer but I like polypro better. no cotton! I have an advantage in that I'm not bothered by cold that much, but DH is a California boy and he is OK with this too. we always wear sunglasses, but sometimes goggles are better. maybe a thin hat or ear band under the helmet. my ears get cold!. will get windproof / waterproof boot covers this year because it's wet many days and wet feet make for cold feet.

I have a question for all of you NOT related to electronics. Lori, especially you, because you motivated your co workers to work out with you. (Glad you & DH had a great trip, you will get those 5 off in a short time).
We are trying to get male cousin interested in trying Cathe workouts. he is NOT fit. he has a gym membership but does little with it. I think he lacks structure to his activity and doesn't know what to do with the time he has, which is considerable. I could loan him disks but unless he tried them at home I can't see how he could use them at a gym. I don't think handing him disks, saying "try these", will be useful. ideas?? His wife is Asian and naturally slim no matter what she eats and doesn't do. so she won't be much help. He has no equipment but could use stuff at the gym. can he stream stuff to his Ipad? just trying to think of what might work. I think he needs someone ( like cathe) to lead him thru a proper workout telling him what to do and how many times.

I did a bi's/ tris premix plus core 1.busy day otherwise.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did a treadmill workout, it was way too cold to go to the track. Wow, it is really windy..things are blowing around outside. I guess it's time to take in the flower pots! The are scattered around the yard. The last little bit of yard clean up to be done.

Valerie, Google is a great thing, I use it for everything that I don't know how to do. I hope you got the iPad working in the car. Like Lynda said, you can just use the speakers from the iPad, but it would be a lot better if you got the blue tooth set up to work. You have that cold weather clothing down! If I ever decide to start doing something in cold weather, I will definitely be consulting you. :). mmm...as for your cousin, is it only the gym he will would be doing anything? If he is savy enough to download a Cathe workout, that could work, but I somehow don';t see a guy using an iPad at a gym....call me sexist, but I would think that guys would not find this "manly" enough...LOL...women don't have those issues. Does he have any kind of set up at home he could start with? All he would need is a couple sets of dumbbells, a TV and DVD player.

Lynda, enjoy your trip!

Josie, how long will you be in LV?

Lori, welcome back! Your trip sounds wonderful, oh for those days in the 80's....and sunshine! I hope the weather is nice for your trip to the Cape. Actually, Kylee didn't bring the squirrel, she was standing over it, under the bird bath...like Valerie said, something else could have killed it and she found it...I hope that is the case. They like to run across the fence line and the dogs chase them, it may have fallen off the fence right at her feet...I don't believe the dogs could really catch one.

Judy, did you order either of the new KCM's? Those will probably be delivered before ICE. I only got the one...not the Athletic Vol2 one.

A workout, and some HouseMax...maybe a quick visit to the assisted living place with one of the dogs...

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

Went spinning yesterday and today I ran with my BF and will train with Karina at 10:30. We are leaving on Saturday for Vegas and will be coming home on Monday. My DD's birthday is Saturday, but she is doing her own thing so, we will be going out to dinner on Friday to celebrate both birthdays. My DH's birthday is on Sunday.

Lori, can't wait to see your pictures. I also gained weight on my vacation, but got rid of it in no time.

Valerie, I never get to use all my winter cycling gear. It never gets that cold here.

Garance, thank you for the review on The Martian. My DH and I plan to go see it tomorrow. Have fund in NY!

Hi to Deb and Judy!

Josie

Hi all!

Here are some pictures. Hope I do not bore you all. I threw in a bikini shot of me that my DH took mid week. He loves that bathing suite! After all the food I had consumed at that point I still put it on. One thing I'll have to say is there were so many shapes and sizes wearing bikinis. God bless them to have the confidence to do so! I'll catch up on posts later tonight when I am home from work. For some reason the pictures of me are very large... Not my intent so just want to warn you!!!!

Deb, he and his wife live in a small condo. If it were me, I'd make space to work out at home. I'd store my bikes in the living room or bedroom hang them "up" on hooks ..... but cousin isn't likely to do that! they live across the street from the gym and have paid for a membership, so he goes there, occasionally, but is not paying for a personal trainer and mostly wastes the time. I was trying to think of a way for him to use Cathe workouts for "structure" so when he goes to the gym he could take his ipad and follow along. A disk makes it so easy to do a complete workout, stick in a player and follow along. Don't know how he could do that at a gym and (you're right) not look silly. but by himself, he's going nowhere. I'd have no problem loaning him some of my disks but I'm not seeing how that will help, especially if he looks for any reason to not follow thru.
Josie enjoy vegas and try not to win too much!
Judy, we don't buy many special things for cycling. we "re-purpose " hiking and ski gear most of the time. I bought some long padded tights last year, and have some wind block ones that aren't padded. when I wear those, I have some separate padded underwear. DH and I both run into sizing problems. some womens' things now come in petite or short lengths, but most mens cycle clothing assumes everyone is 6'5" with a 36 inch inseam. shorter men are not lucky.

ETA Lori you look great as does the resort. glad you had such a good trip.

Valerie,

You should suggest darebee.com to your cousin. They offer a wide variety of workouts using your own body weight and most of them are
20-30 minutes long. I love their workouts and they offer something for every one. They even have workouts for people with disabilities.

Josie

Josie I will take a look at darbee. I think going to a gym is too "open ended" for him, and he needs a specific program or routine to follow,
don't think he will do much at home , it would be a little cramped plus he is used to not doing anything there. that's why I was thinking if he could take a program of some sort with him to the gym, maybe it would get done.

Good evening ladies!

Today at lunch we did 21d Barre Legs. Apparently, no one worked out while I was gone! They are funny. They were all glad to get back into it today. We have been having about on average 6 working out. Today we had a new person join in and could not believe how hard us ladies are working in just 30 minutes. Tomorrow is upper extreme and she'll be back.

The sunrise was taken at about 6ish. Was so beautiful to watch. Hope you do not mind the bathing suit shot. I have been working my butt off to feel comfortable in it. Although, the last day I was wearing a 1 piece. Lol! Not that it mattered....As I mentioned, in Mexico...there is absolutley no modesty. Unbelievable, how many women wear thong bikini's. And aparently it does not matter your size to do so either. There are some things you just can't unsee. But you know...good for them not to care.

Valerie...it is so hard to motivate people by giving them a DVD and hoping they will do it and stick with it. When I first started with the girls we talked about just a few times a week and for 30 minutes only. Then we ended up doing the 21 day fix program which worked perfectly for us. Doing the program as a group supporting each other everyday was key. He has a membership to a gym but does not go regularly. Perhaps he can invest in a personal trainer just to map out a plan? Or google a paper workout program he can take to the gym and just follow along. I agree with Deb about a man using an ipad in a gym. I of course had no problem and did just that in Mexico! He also can buy some bands and use them at home. P90x is a great program you can do with bands and can easily be modify when necessary. This is the program that jump started my weight routine workouts. I was pretty much cardio only until I think 2010 or 2011. There is also P90 that came out last year made specifically for people just starting out. Not sure if they have bands in it though. I wish your cousin the best!

Deb...I am really looking forward to the ICE workouts too. I love all the updates. Which KCM did you buy? I am holding out. I have actually done good not buying workouts in a while. The Live keeps things fresh for me.

Josie...sounds like a fun night on Friday! Funny hearing you say it never gets that cold here. Oh I only can dream of that! Have fun in Vegas!

Judy...I remember feeling that way towards the end of STS. I loved it but was ready to move on. I need to really decide when to start up again. The last trip I am going on is the weekend of 11/6. Going to DC. Perhaps after that will be a good time. Will only doe Meso 2&3. Will be curious to see what results I get.

Lynda...I am sure you are having a great time! Can't wait to hear all about it!

Good morning, & Happy Hump Day!

This month has flown by...Halloween around the corner and then it's time to get ready for Thanksgiving. Where did the summer go?

Josie, great workouts! Hope you win big this weekend!

Lori, love the pics! You look awesome in that bikini. :) and you deserve it with all the work you have done! The pics are not large at all....I have to double click on them to see the pic. I agree, lots of people wear things at a resort that they may not ever where in public here, but hey, they are enjoying themselves right? I bought the new one that she is making right now...it's called Strength & Stamina, here is a clip http://www.coffeyfit.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2807. How long will you be in DC? For work or pleasure? If you are looking for something to do for a day, the Mount Vernon boat trip was great. Now sure how the weather is in November there though.

Valerie, maybe a workout on a MP3 player ( iPod) for your cousin to do? Even if he starts out with a walking workout on the treadmill...using the iPod will guide him and keep his interest up. It also will not be so noticeable, everyone uses an iPod at the gym on the machines. I have a great one part of her walking series...called Walk Fit...volume one is for beginners. Candace Grasso is the producer of it. Not that expensive either. You can see it here:
http://www.fitisitcardio.com/shopping.html

Hi to Judy, & Lynda,

Bust day today, a meeting at the bank this morning, then lunch with an old friend from the dog world that I have not seen for a while, class tonight, and a dog club meeting afterwards....I was going to try to go to the assisted living place with a dog today....I may have to rethink that......

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did STS disc 38, Squat Rack Legs. I am doing better with lower body work so maybe I am finally getting past the hip and sciatic issues.

Deb- I did order both of the new KCM DVDs. Not sure how I will like the Athletic Conditioning one but thought I would give it a try. I noticed that Cathe is having a Q & A session today from 2-3 EST on Facebook. Maybe she will be able to give an update on when they might start shipping ICE.

Lori-you look great! Glad you had such a good trip!

Valerie- There is a basic workout app for iPhone that might be something you could offer your cousin:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/daily-workouts-free-personal/id469068059?mt=8
I agree with everyone else though, it's really hard to motivate someone else to workout and he might need to be in a group or to have a personal trainer.

Josie-great job with your training! Happy Birthday to your DD & DH!

Hi to Lynda!
