Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/13

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Burn Sets for bis and tris (38 min.)--a short one, because I had to go and do another vein closure. I don't have any saphenous veins left in either leg, so it's just more sclerotherapy at some point, and then I should be done. I feel like this process has been going on forever. On the other hand, my legs feel much better, and they look really lovely.

I read the piece Valerie and agree with it: I don't think Marsha Blackburn, a rep from TN will ever agree to another interview on MSNBC after one of their people asked her, "Do you hate Obamacare more than you love your country?" She did a doubletake and then said, "That is so inappropriate of a question." I thought it was a great question, and he followed up with several of her quotes basically reinforcing that she always intended to shut down the government. The most ironic item of news I heard was that the Republican Congressional caucus met yesterday, and began the meeting by singing "Amazing Grace," a hymn more conventionally sung at funerals, composed by a repentant former slave owner. Apparently the hymn was also led by a former funeral director. I hope this signals the death throes of the Tea Party. Are there any sites where you can do a review of the hotel? That might get someone's attention if you warned people about the possible hazards of staying there.

Go Red Sox!!!

Good evening ladies!

Did Upper body burn sets last night. This work out is 79 mins long! Did not realize this until I went to do it. I may need to cut it down a bit. Or save this for a weekend workout if we do it again in this rotation. DH wasn't feeling it so no workout for him. Oh well....says he will aim for tomorrow. Ha! We'll see.

Today was a rest day for me. Do not want to over do shoulder so took it easy today.

Valerie...I received check. Thank you! I had a feeling they were not going to be helpful at all when you called about your card. This is ridiculous. I have not read the article yet but plan to tomorrow. Very intrigued especially after Lynda's comments!

Judy...hoping Tiger continues to feel better.

Lynda...does seem like you have had a long struggle with those veins. Glad this is close to an end and all looks and feels great! Watching Soxs as I type this!!!!! So exciting.

Deb...must be really strange being in DC during this time. Thought I heard things will be back tomorrow. I could be mistaken though. Need to go online and see what happened today. I think you mentioned you were coming home today anyways.

Hi to Josie!

Have a great night!

Good morning,

Home at last. It was a good trip, saw a lot of my peers and we had good discussions on the business etc, even though the government guests we had invited could not show up.

Valerie, have you called the hotel and asked if anyone else had issues that time period? If you and your sister call separately, it would get them thinking.

Judy, still keeping Tiger in my thoughts, hoping this turns around. If he ate a little on his own, it is a good sign.

Lynda, glad your vein procedures are almost done. Feeling and looking better was the goal and it sounds like you have succeeded, even if you have to do a little more.

Lori, Good job on the workout! :) I don't think I could do 79 minutes, even on a Sunday! Besides the hotel being only 30% occupied, I could not see too much difference unless you went out into downtown DC I guess. I was surprised at how busy the airport was though, still a lot of people flying in and out of there. I found out that I have TSA Pre-Check status so I don't have to go in the regular security line, ( at least with US Air), and no shoes, jacket off etc. I want to sign up for this with Southwest too. Nice.

Josie, I got your check, thank you.

Only 2 days to go, what's everyone doing this weekend?

Hi Ladies,

It's been a couple of hard weeks :(. The viewing and the funeral were mentally draining.
I did not feel like myself until today. My DD and I came home after the funeral on Tuesday and went to bed we just could not function. Garance, you and your DH probably felt the same way.

I will be spinning today plus abs.

Judy, hope Tiger is feeling better.

Deb, welcome home. Are you sure you charged me enough for the video?

Hi to Valerie and Lori!

Josie

I wish I thought the tea party was done for... but I think the best we can hope for is the more moderate R's be more aggressive in suppressing some of this craziness, now that they have surely lost in the court of public opinion. Hope they are thoroughly bashed by the press and I hope the press overall is more aggressive about reporting accurately, and not worrying so much about "fair and balanced" . wrong is wrong, and should be reported that way.

Lynda good thought on commenting in reviews online. I will see what's available. DH saw something on consumer reports on devices like flash drives that can be stuck into a computer port and data stolen. wish I'd see it but I missed it.

I haven't been reporting my activity lately but been busy. still outside sports, road rides of 30 and 25 miles, and 3 hikes, yesterday 10 miles RT . also back to yoga both days this week. weather has been lovely lately, but will be indoors soon enough.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit + Core 1 (49 min.).

Such a beautiful autumn we have had! The foliage around here is spectacular this year. And it really has been mild, too. I think it may turn colder this weekend.

Josie, I agree. Grief just makes me weary. I also started reading a novel I know my sister-in-law would have loved: The Signature of All Things. She was such a dedicated gardener, and the major character is a botanist. It's really good and I recommend it for anyone looking for an entertaining read. Feels a bit like a 19th c. novel--e.g., George Eliot. Went to see Gravity, which is very good, but I thought I was going to be blown away from the reviews, and I wasn't.

Deb, this vein stuff will probably go on another year, but the appointments are so intermittent. The doctor likes to see what happens after each procedure has a chance to have an impact.

Lori, I have never done all of the Burn Sets at the same time. Just the two shorter workouts. You are truly a glutton for punishment! On the other hand, I did Turbo Barre a lot, and that was 74 min. and Rockin' Models which was 80 min.

Hope Tiger is on the mend, Judy!

I don't know, Valerie. We seem destined to lurch from crisis to crisis in government these days. It would be really nice if Congress tried to solve some problems instead of trading insults with one another.

Hi ladies!

This morning I ran 2 miles then To The Max tonight. This was the first time doing this dvd as I bought it a while ago and just never got around to it. WOW what a workout. Loved the core work with weights at the end. Not sure why this took me a while to do!

Lynda..it has been a beautiful Autumn. I need to start to think about raking leaves though. :(. I have not seen Gravity. My DH did and he also thought it was hyped too much. I saw Captain Phillips over the weekend and thought it was a really intense movie and both my son and I really liked it. Also opening tomorrow is 12 years a slave. I read the book which was great and the movie is supposed to be oscar material...so I have heard in the news. I will be seeing this on Saturday.

Valerie...Agree with you 100% about all this crap with the shut. This was ridiculous. Heard on the news this cost our economy 24 million dollars!!!!!!! Can't believe they let this happen.

Deb....welcome back!

Judy...thinking of your baby and hoping he is doing better.

Josie...thinking of you too and your family.

Chat with you all tomorrow.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks again for your thoughts about Tiger. He is eating a little more on his own and has started moving around the condo a little more. He is still so frail looking but he does seem to be a little stronger.

Yesterday I did Muscle Max and today was a rest day. Tomorrow will be a Spinerval and core work. I think our nice weather is gone..rainy and cold today.

Lori-wow, that is a long workout! I've only done the shorter burn sets workouts. I'll have to try the full one sometime. To The Max is on my want list too, it sounds like a great workout.

Josie-I'm so sorry :( Will be thinking of you and your family

Valerie- It sounds like you are getting some nice rides in! DH and I really need to get back out before the weather really gets bad.

Hi to Deb & Lynda,

Judy

Our fall started out just awful, by converting to winter but we've had a reprieve the last 10 days with more decent stuff to come. so DH and I are going to Yellowstone for 4 days. camping is limited so we'll take the car and rent a house we've rented before. would prefer the camper but it's hunting season and has been wintery there. gets dark early and nights are long. car is faster and we won't be dependent on campground availability. every day can get "run" by where you need to be for that night.

Judy hope the little guy continues to improve. does he need to be on a special kidney diet now?

I've only done burn sets in shorter workouts too. I have stuck to 1 hour for indoor things. I may change that this year . with DH around ( and underfoot) all the time, a longer workout doesn't sound too bad.

both those movies are on my queue. I expect to like captain Phillips more. I like the work the director has done( loved United 93) and like tom hanks, plus just sounds like what I'll like. "gravity" sounds like more of a "theater" movie with special effects.

Lori I heard $24 Billion. with a "B". horrid to think we may be run through this mill again in January if the TP comes up with some new strategy. maybe there's hope if even Mitch McConnell, not exactly a screaming moderate, says this is not going to happen again. Lynda that was a terrific question asked of that rep, and it's scary what these people will resort to to make their point, or to undo something.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flex Train (56 min.). I really like this total body workout. Probably not enough leg work, but then there is the Legs and Abs and the Glutes workouts, which I also really like.

Valerie, I would seriously NOT watch Gravity at home. It's so dependent on 3D and the experience of space that it wouldn't work without it. What I found especially irritating was that I really didn't know what she was trying to do in the space module, or even what the module was. I just found it absurd that she would get into a Russian doohingy and start reading the doohingy's manual like it was a new sewing machine or something, and start pressing buttons. Put Prisoners on your list instead. It's long but the performances are stunningly complex.

Another recommendation: a PBS series called Doc Martin. This is for anyone (Deb??) who loved All Creatures Great and Small. Not because Doc Martin likes animals, but because it's so British and every character so idiosyncratic and funny. If you have Amazon Prime, you can watch the first five seasons for free. You can also buy the whole set of seasons for a very good price, which I did for DH

Lori, yes, I want to see Captain Phillips, and this is one DH will go to with me. 12 Years a Slave has received a lot of Oscar buzz, so that's on my list too. Valerie is right--it was 24 BILLION dollars.

Judy, it sounds like Tiger is slowly coming back. I sold my TTM, I think because there was too much impact for me.

Going out to dinner tomorrow night, but nothing else interesting over the weekend except for the Red Sox and the Pats.

Lynda, that's what I thought Gravity sounded like. I didn't read the reviews carefully... they were 4 star by both papers here... but didn't sound like a "story" movie. I thought of Avatar.... once was fine but no more. I like sci-fi stuff once in a while, but usually not a repeater for me. haven't heard much yet about 12 yrs a slave. Prisoners... going on the list. didn't hear about that one either. ETA not finding this one on Netflix. is it a very recent release? who's in it?

I'm spending today getting supplies ready so maybe we can do a hike tomorrow since sunday will be an all day drive. the camper is a little slower and allows us to stop sooner if we want, but with the car we just leave early and drive all the way. sunday avoids commute traffic. should be lots of fall color and some early snow up high.

Good evening ladies!

No run this morning. Did Hardstrikes plus conditioning tonight. Tomorrow will be the new legs workout. Looking forward to it as I have not done either of the leg workouts yet.

Ha! Guess I was a little off with the $$$. $24 BILLION!!!!! Unbelievable.

Valerie...have a great trip!

Judy...good to hear Tiger is a little stronger. This is encouraging!

Hi to Deb and Josie!!!!!

Hi Everyone,

This morning we lost our other cat, Misty. She is the black cat in my photos. I am still in shock. I have been preparing myself to lose Tiger, but Misty has always been so healthy. Yesterday we thought she seemed a little off, kind of lethargic so we scheduled a vet appointment for last night around 6:30 pm. We took her, got blood work, basic exam. The vet was going to call me today with the blood test results. This morning, after DH went to work, I found Misty under the bed, laying on her side. I pulled her out and she was gasping for air and in distress. I wrapped her in a towel, called the vet and took Misty there. They put her on oxygen and made her more comfortable. The vet did an X-ray and found a large tumor on one of her kidneys. There was nothing they could do to save her. Misty was DH's cat first, he got her when she was a kitten, over 13 years ago. DH left work to come to the vet's office and we were able to say goodbye to Misty and to be with her when she passed. We couldn't let her suffer. I was not prepared for how hard it would be to lose her or to have to make the decision to help her pass.

I am a total wreck right now. I was not prepared for this. It happened so fast. I'm going to try to pull myself together and stay strong so I can take care of Tiger.

Judy

Oh Judy, I am so sorry to hear this. You did the right thing and not let her suffer. Perhaps this was a blessing for it to come on so suddenly and not have her go thru months of pain. Regardless though it still hurts for you and DH. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband.

Thank you Lori,
You are right, I couldn't bear the thought of sweet Misty suffering. She was healthy and strong up until the last couple of days. It was a blessing that it happened so fast.

Oh no Judy!! I am so sorry. We lost our previous Puss similarly. it's best not to let it go on... cats are so good at hiding discomfort or maybe ( lets hope) there was none, just a sudden issue. I know how hard this is... all of us with pets know how hard it is.

yes, billion... lots of $$$$$ I'm trying to remember who the senator was who said " a billion here, a billion there...pretty soon you're talking about real money..." Everett Dirksen? off to google it...

Judy,

so sorry to hear about Misty! Here you are worrying about Tiger, and this happens. I can't imagine how shocked you must be.

Here is something that we have on a large mural at our dog club, where people can write and post pictures of their pets that have gone. I know it may seem corny to some, but it gives us some hope that we will some day meet up with them again.

The Rainbow Bridge Poem - The beautiful journey of a pet after death.

Had a great agility class with Keegan this morning, it was like he was a different dog. Where was this dog last week in the trial? He always surprises me.

Lynda, I do have Amazon Prime, but it doesn't say anywhere that the streaming shows are free. I like the sound of that series a lot, and would watch it on my iPad once I figure out how the Prime thing works for this!

A nice autumn day here, not too warm but dry with some sunshine. What more could you ask for?

Hi to all,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

Housemax for me this morning.

Oh, Judy, I'm sad for you. It's so hard to put down a beloved pet and 13 years is a long time.

Deb, if you sign in to your Amazon Prime account and go to the videos, there's tons of free series and movies and Doc Martin is one of them. I'm sure Lori would tell you the same thing. She watches Sons of Anarchy, and I think that's free, too. The first several seasons of The Good Wife are free. All of the X-Files are free. Other series you pay for either by episode or you can buy the whole season.

Valerie, Prisoners is still in theaters. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhall are the stars.

Another beautiful fall day here and the foliage is still pretty gorgeous.

Hmmm, so it is. I left off the final "s" and it didn't come up on Netflix... I already had it in the queue. thanks Lynda.

I "re-signed" up for Weight watchers yesterday. not losing on my own. staying pretty steady except for the 2 lbs I immediately gained from my low spot, so I probably never really had lost it. not sure how well this will work on a trip, but I should be able to get online to track, so I'll give it a try.

Hi Ladies,

I went spinning with my friend this morning and then to breakfast.
Tomorrow I will be walking 3 miles with hand weights.

Judy, I'm so sorry for you loss. You and your DH are in my prayers.
