Pentagenarians & Beyond" W/B 10/1

I didn't really suffer many problems without an ACL. some people can barely function without one. it depends on how all the muscles and tendons and ligaments hook up. for the same reasons, some people are more at risk of tearing one. I had the option of just cleaning up a torn meniscus. if I was going to have surgery, I could not see a reason not to get it fixed. It turned out well, and that knee is better functioning than my other one, at least for some moves.
I ended up doing High reps & Abs again today. I had a Derm appt, and she did a scrape biopsy on this small spot on my thigh. will take a week for a result, depending. it is a lovely clinic and I liked the doc. it's funny, because I picked her out for my DH a few years ago when he needed someone and he is very pleased with her. so he set up the appt for me. this might be all I need, or I might need a bit more excised, depending on what it turns out to be.

I wish I felt more optimistic that a horrific event like this might lead to change. it seems the number of guns this guy had keep increasing, and there is the device ( pump stock or something?) he used to make semi automatics into automatics. there is no possible need for this kind of device. or for silencers to be more available. we all know, whether we say it out loud or not, that someone will plan something even bigger... just so they can claim to have killed the most people in the "biggest" mass shooting in history. all those families suffering horrific losses for no reason except being at a concert.....

we are hiking tomorrow ...have some sunshine and great fall color.

Good morning,

Like others here, yesterday I did the lower body and core sections of 4DS Kickbox. :)

Judy, I can understand why you may not want the Live streaming workouts, especially if you hurt your back the last time you used them. I just like the atmosphere of the Live workouts...it seems so relaxed and casual.. Maybe you should just do the upper body, and Fit Tower etc...I don't do all of them...but have a bunch of favorites. I have never viewed/tried a Jessica Smith yoga workout...I need to go over and view some on YouTube.

Valerie, I give you a lot of credit..there is no way I would do a 12 hour drive in one day...I can barely stand a 5 hour drive when we go to the Catskills. Hope all turns out well with the derm appointment. It is good to have a DR that you really like.

Diane Sue, Great workout! LOL...great minds think alike? IBM changed something about their servers and that made a lot of people that use Chromecast not able to access the older workouts. I have a lot of favorites from the older ones and am not happy that they still do not have this fixed.

Carolyn, great workout, and nice calorie burn!

Take care,

Today I did STS D 23 Legs. Trisets again and my muscles are definitely feeling it. Workout time was 55 minutes with 304 calories burned. Average heart rate was 118 and maximum heart rate 148.

I went to WW this morning and stopped in the store after the meeting. Unfortunately I forgot to get a jalapeno pepper that I need for my cilantro lime dressing tonight. I'll have to decide if it's worth a quick trip to the store.

Hello to everyone and enjoy the afternoon.

Today I had to get up and go to the store before my workout so my husband could use his car. Still waiting on mine. My workout was 4Day Split Higher Intensity Step, 33 minutes, 141 average heart rate, 172 max heart rate, 237 calorie. I then did the premix that is back and biceps from 4 day Split. I should have written these moves in the order they are in because it took me a bit between each round to change up weights and the step. Also the body parts are on two different dvds normally and two different worksheets. I will prepare better for Fridays weight work.
Back and Biceps was 35 minutes (10 minutes longer than it should have been) 117 calories, heart rate average 100, max 123. I finished with Kelly Coffey's Body Design yoga segment, 14 minutes, 33 calories. I did this because my legs are stiff and there was no stretch on the back and biceps premix. Total time was 82 minutes, 387 calories.
Back and Biceps
superman no weight, 1 arm row warm up set 15#, 16 reps
one arm row 30# 8 reps
standing hammer curl with twist pyramid up 12# 12 reps, 15#, 10 reps
standing traditional curl pyramid up 15# 10 reps, 20# 8 reps
one arm row 30# 8 reps
barbell crazy 8's 35# 24 reps
reverse curls 15's 10 reps
underhand barbell row 63# x 7 reps
biceps incline hammer curls with twist 16.5's 12 reps
double arm seated hammer curl on stability ball 16.5's 8 reps
incline pull overs 25# x 12 reps
biceps hanging concentration curls with one hand on step 25# x 12 reps
biceps wrist curls 15# x 16 reps
t-band flys green band

Carolyn, I went to the store this morning for the rest of the ingredients for beef stroganoff. I forgot mushrooms and my husband had the car so it is without the mushrooms. I suppose some of the family won't care.

Deb, I recently added a ROKU stick to my workout television. I know Cathe recommends the ROKU 3 and have not tried it. Normally I used an HDMI cable and my cell phone. I have not tried screen mirroring and I know I could do that with my tablet.

Valerie, my torn miniscus was not a real deep tear, and they trimmed and fixed it, I don't know about the bakers cyst though. I guess there is an area that heals and can even heal on it's own and if it is deeper it may be harder to mend?

Good evening ladies!

Yesterday I kept with the BBS rotation dance along with an SB lower body. Also took GiGi for a walk. Today was a BBS tramp workout plus an upper body and finished with a 10 min core. Figured I could handle a 10 min core workout. I am not near my phone so I am unable to add in minutes and calories.

Diane Sue...one of the main reasons why I love having 2 rebounders. The large one always has the bar set up and has a softer bounce. Perfect for SB's Bounces or similar. The smaller bellicon has no bar and a really firm bounce perfect for BBS and Power Jumps. Makes things so much easier. I do not have to put the bar on and then take off. Some workouts work better with and some without. How long has it been now without a car? That would make me crazy! All this talk about 4DS is making me want to do one of the workouts! I love the kickbox in this series.

Valerie...I just made an appt for my left shoulder. With walking GiGi she has yanked my arm a few times and it has been bothering me. Before it would hurt off and on but now it seems more on than off. I now wrap her lead around my waist when we go. I am sure it looks quite comical. Hope you had a great hike today.

Deb...you still have not been able to play older live workouts? That is crazy this is still going on. I love the live workouts. I just do not get to them as much as I used to. I usually try and get one in over the weekend. I need to update my live list. Will do this soon.

Judy...I can see how the live workouts can push you. I think because there are more water breaks you do not realize how hard you are working. I do not even have a dvd or blue ray player hooked up any more. I am streaming all the way!

Carolyn...oh I hate when I forget a something and have to go back. Hope it worked out for you and you were able to make your dressing. It sounds really yummy.

We are heading to the Cape for the long weekend. We both took Friday off and we are planning to leave directly from my office tomorrow. Bob is meeting me there and we will leave his car and take mine. We are bringing our bikes and I am thrilled!

Have a great night all!!

Lori, before I got the Fit Tower I had my rebounder sitting out a lot so if I wanted to hop on it for impact it was out. Now it makes the space tight for some cardio workouts. It depends on how much space I need. I can see how the softer bounce would work better for SB as opposed to the workouts that require some major jumping. It is two weeks today since we took my car in. I think I am going to call them tomorrow and maybe bring it home. I don't know why it is not acting up for them.

We did our hike today, about 5 hrs 45 min. it was lovely. unfortunately when we got back down there were 38 cars parked there. DH and I did this same hike a few years ago, and in Oct there would not be anyone else there. It is so unpleasant to have that many people milling around and being noisy. we took a slightly different destination and managed to be by ourselves. fall colors were great. cool and crisp but still sunny. fall is always a favorite time for me.

I forget if I said but tuesday nite I did High reps and abs again. Again, pressed for time and this one does not need a lot of preparation or weights.

I a ready to slap the next person who suggests "hopes and prayers" or "that it's too soon to discuss gun control issues". worthless!. Doesn't help dead / injured people who did nothing to deserve this except be wrong place, wrong time. . we need to make changes in laws and enforce them. I am disgusted with this country for refusing to address this issue. it is to the point of beyond ridiculous.

I looked at a rebounder video and don't think it would be for me. I need something more mindless so I can watch a screen.
Lori I had very good luck with seeing orthopedics and cortisone shots along with PT. I never figured out what caused the problem for certain, but it's been a long time now and it is fixed.

Carolyn I've had good luck with freezing an jalapeno and chopping off what I need right from the freezer. I used to buy them and toss them when they got squishy. DH doesn't like spice so it's only for me, and frozen in a zip lock they last fine and are easy to chop right out of the freezer because they are so thin.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did S&S Ramped Up Upper Body. Not a huge calorie burn for some reason...only 198 calories. It was a lot lower than the last time I did it.

Carolyn, cilantro lime dressing sounds interesting....I would probably leave out the jalapeno pepper....can you post the recipe?

Diane Sue, 4 DS is pretty popular this week. :). Do you use the RoKU stick for the Live streaming? I have a Chromecast, and tried the "mirroring" technique but didn't like it. I also tried the Google Home app that Chromecast recommends, but found it annoying. Too many steps, for no advantage. I saw that they now have an app for Live streaming, for Android phones. I asked the Admins what the advantage was in using the app over just streaming from the web and they did not answer my question.

Lori, I agree, 4DS Kickbox is one of Cathe's best. Would love to have the updated Live list, but I know you are so busy...so do it when you can. That sounds like a fun weekend! Is your son staying with the dogs?

Not sure what is up for today....I may go to my friends to watch the finale of Suits....we are so far behind!

Tale care,

Planning on a bike ride this morning when it warms up a little. it is beautiful again today, but driving to hike 2 days in a row is a lot. we seem to be in a stretch where we are just barely missing crashes . there was a wrong way driver on the freeway yesterday morning who crashed. it explains the mess we had to wind thru on our way north. had happened only a short time before according to the newspaper account, some drunk driving south in the northbound lanes for 20 miles before he was stopped.. on the way home from MT we saw 2 crashes almost as they happened., seeing car parts flying and cars suddenly stopping with steam rising. at least half a dozen more in clean up process.

I was pleased to see a lot of other people are tired of hearing the same old "thoughts and prayers " song and dance. We need to get some legislation passed before the next crazy tries to one up the las vegas event. Get involved if you can by writing or calling your government representatives and maybe.. maybe... we can start making some small progress. I had given up hope after Newtown.

Deb, a wide range of heat in jalapenos. many of them are only a tiny bit more flavor than a plain old green pepper. I ike heat so I test a bite before using them. IMO the bigger ones have less heat. Like I said, I've taken to halving them, removing seeds and membranes and freezing in a zip lock so I can have them on hand and can adjust heat easily. I'm a bit of a chili head. often I add heat of some kind to my serving since DH is such a heat wimp.

Today I did HiiT 40/20 from the Shock Cardio series for 31 minutes and 222 calories. Average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate 154.

Deb, the recipe that I use for the cilantro lime dressing is a combination of two different recipes. I started with a recipe from Rebecca Katz's Healthy Mind cookbook and tweaked it a bit to make it my own:

1 jalapeno, seeds and core removed, coarsely chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
3/4 tsp minced ginger root
1/4 c lime juice
1/2 tsp lime zest
2 TBSP honey (or less if desired)
2 tsp balsamic vinegar
1/2 c cilantro
1/2 c olive oil
1/2 tsp salt

Place ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. I sometimes add 1 tsp dijon mustard if I want it to emulsify a bit more. This dressing is great with taco salad or a southwest chicken salad.

I find that jalapeno adds more flavor than heat to dishes.

This morning's workout was Cardio Slam, 50 minutes, 331 calories, heart rate average, 142, max 176, 3,987 steps. I followed with the abs from Strong and Sweaty, 13 minutes, 114 heart rate average, 144 max, 57 calories. I finished off with the calves and abs from 4 Day Split lower intensity step which is not done in the premixes I am using, 16 minutes, 53 calories, heart rate average 88, max 120. Total time 79 minutes, 441 calories. Trying Madison Reed hair color today. I have my fingers crossed for no irritation or itchiness when I am done.

Valerie, that is too bad so many people showed up. It would definitely cut down on the enjoyment of nature and beauty. I keep jalapenos in a quart size freezer bag and cut off what I need too. It works perfectly for me. I have some basil and dill in freezer bags as well. I can only cook with the basil as it would be mushy if it was not cooked in something. I had looked it up on the internet to see if I could do it. My daughter gave me a lot of basil, dill and jalapenos. I always wonder at how people manage to go the wrong way on the freeway.

Deb, I have not tried the Roku stick yet. I just got it recently. We have a Roku 3 down stairs and another stick in the bedroom. I haven't tried those either. I will check into it though whenever I do live again. If it is too much work I would just pull it up on my laptop or cell and plug in the HDMI cable. I don't like doing it on the laptop. It is too small for me. The hassle is dragging the laptop from downstairs upstairs as my upstairs computer is old and does not have a HDMI port. I wonder why the administration did not answer you. I often wonder why one time I will get a much better calorie burn with a workout than others. I felt my burn with Cardio Slam and the effort put out was low today.

Good evening ladies!

No workout this morning. Needed the extra time to pack up the car and put bikes on the rack. I drove to work with everything then Bob met me at my office at 4pm and we drove from there. There was an accident that really backed up traffic. But we are here safe and sound. I brought my bellicon and will get some good workouts in between biking. My husband really was surprise that I was bringing it since we plan to bike a lot. I love my husband and he is doing so great biking but it is a really slow casual kind of biking. I always am thankful I worked out beforehand. Of course I would never tell him this!

Diane Sue...yes I agree with you they both take up a lot of space. My son is thinking about moving out soon so perhaps I will get my workout room back. I love that the legs on the bellicon can be removed rather easily and quickly vs the jumpsport. Made it so much easier to put in the car. Please tell me what you think of Madison Reed. I am very interested in their product. We have a couple Roku 3's and love them. We actually bring one when we travel and have it with us now. Good workouts. I never work my calves and always fast forward when they come up. I feel with all the bounce and barre I do I do not need it. I am very happy the way they look! Even when cathe is doing barre and does calves..I skip right thru. I feel it is overkill for me.

Valerie...I am hoping it is just a quick shot and then all is good. It has worked before so fingers crossed. When I had an issue with my right shoulder I had a cortisone shot and it completely took care of it. My left shoulder has been stubborn. A beautiful day here in New England also. Driving here there was a harvest moon. So beautiful.

Deb...I always find weight workouts are a lot less calorie burn. Yes I will definitely update list when I get back. I wasn't sure if it was still needed. Nicholas is taking care of our pets and I know they are in good hands. :) you are doing great with your workouts. You seemed to not have skipped a beat!

Carolyn...I love the Hiit Dvd and have done the workouts many times. My favorite is the pyramid one. Thanks for the recipe. I showed my husband and he plans to make it. He is the cook in the family!

Have a great night all!!!

Carolyn thanks for the recipe. that sounds yummy!. I agree about jalapeno. sometimes you get an unusually hot one but mostly it is flavor and not really heat.
I freeze jalapenos, parsley too. I got tired of buying it, using a tablespoon of it and the rest going to slime in the fridge. so I wash it , trim off stemps, and freeze. even color stays good.

Diane sue, we encountered a wrong way driver once on the freeway and it was incredibly scary. early morning in rural eastern
WA. It is hard to see what is happening. everyone ahead is diving for the shoulder or median, and all of a sudden there is something coming at you that should not be there! their speed plus your own speed makes it come up incredibly fast. this person missed hitting everyone and must have got off without being caught. I called it in to 911 & checked back later to see if any one was caught. they were not.
yesterday's person was a DUI. geez... at 6 am. WSP set up a barrier on the freeway. he dodged it, hit a truck and a car. glad we weren't a half hour earlier! we just saw the clean up in process.

we did our ride 26 miles. I felt tired to start with but did OK.

Good morning,

A rest day yesterday.

Valerie, that is pretty scary to think of this person driving the wrong way for 20 miles!

Carolyn, great recipe...I copied it to my recipe file in Word.

Diane Sue, good combination of workouts. Let us know how that hair dye works....did you get it online?

Lori, I agree with the biking, I am the same with John. He goes slow and steady. When will you get the shot for your shoulder? Have fun this weekend!

Not sure what is up for today....

Take care,

I should be so lucky with biking... DH is a maniac. I keep up road biking he is much better mt biker though, I won't ever be that good especially downhill. so he has to wait for me regularly. I get there when I get there.

Lori the simplest thing helped my shoulder. during PT the therapist noted I was "hiking" my rt shoulder upward. once I stopped doing that , it got better quickly. this was after the second cortisone shot in a year. my other shoulder never was affected. I wondered if it had anything to do with my carrying a shoulder bag purse on that side for decades because it seemed to be a similar movement., lifting that side slightly. I was doing it during therapy. so the shot was great, but a few sessions of PT might be a good investment to possibly keep the problem from recurring.

Deb, I have no clue how someone could weave thru oncoming traffic in the wrong direction for 20 miles. that is a less busy section of hwy but not deserted! WSP set up a blockade, and getting past it, he ran into a truck and a car but nothing that involved injuries to anyone. I think it would be pretty easy to make a wrong turn and get on the freeway ramp going the wrong direction especially in the dark. being drunk at 6 am probably makes it even easier. :( if you're not drunk, you would figure it out your error pretty quickly though! Actually, it was only a few weeks ago when I was coming down an exit ramp 4 lanes wide, and someone drove past me going the wrong way. I honked and waved like crazy but too late, he kept going another 100 yds before realizing. I saw in the mirror that he stopped. that particular entrance is at a confusing intersection. but that is just a navigation error! Not like driving 20 miles with all those oncoming headlights.

going to go mt biking this morning as it will be wet this weekend so will do all my shopping. we stay home on weekends now and use the time for errands, cleaning, home projects.

STS Mesocycle 2 is done! Today was D 24, Back and Biceps. Workout time was 56 minutes, 205 calories burned, average heart rate 103, and maximum heart rate 129. I followed up with the Extended Stretch for additional 15 minutes.

Deb, I am often surprised by the low calorie burn with weight workouts when I feel like I am working so hard.

Valerie, I have wondered the same thing about my shoulders--years of carrying heavy purses and bags causing an alignment problem.

Lori, it's wonderful that you were able to get away for a long weekend. Enjoy!

Hello to Diane Sue and Judy. Have a good afternoon.

Good evening ladies,

What a nice day today. My husband slept in a bit so I could get a workout in. Was a win win for both of us. I did a BBS tramp workout that was 22 mins then 47 mins of Cathe's Live Road Trip Fit Tower workout. The plan was to do the 61 min workout but was inturrupted by the maintenance man of the time share. Forgot we called him last night. Had no volume with TV. I was still happy with the workout I got in. So easy to do this FT workout with out the tower. I had my rebounder on the side for my barre and used the dowel in the closet to loop a band over for pull pull ups. I felt really worked. We rode just over 10 miles today. This was huge for my husband. We road to the grocery store and back, then to the beach, walked around, then headed back. He is so in to it. He is a different man from last summer. Total weight loss was 70 lbs. and I think he is on his way to keeping it off.

Valerie...wow that must have been so scary with a wrong way driver coming at you! Crazy. I am glad my husband is not super crazy fast with biking. I can see how mountain biking downhill would be scary. I see on tv how some just fly down. Pretty impressive. I am actually enjoying the slower pace. I am able to really take in all my surrondings and it is beautiful here in October. I will be back here in a couple of weeks for our annual meeting. Coming with my son and his GF. We have done this a few times before.

Deb...my appt is Tuesday morning so hoping she gives me a shot right then. She has in the past so hoping for this once again.

Any plans for the weekend?

Carolyn that is exactly what I was thinking about my shoulder. they called it "impingement" but never could figure out what caused it. Regardless, I was lifting my shoulder during PT and once they made me aware of it, I stopped doing it and it got better and has stayed OK 2 years now.

Lori ... my DH is not ridiculous but faster than me. you see people mt biking at crazy speeds especially downhill. (saw 2 people like that today) I'm always in control........ everything is fine... until it's not, and I'm not interested in broken bones or teeth. there are special "downhill only" bikes with special shock absorption for use at lift served downhill ski areas. so they ride a chair lift up, scream back down. they wear bigger helmets and padding. not what I do! we ride uphill and ride long distances on forest service roads. we have power assist brakes that help immensely.
Be proud of your DH. that is a heck of a loss and lifestyle change. congratulations to him.
we rode for about 2 hours this morning, around 7 miles. the trails are open until it gets rainy, and then they close so they don't get chewed up into muddy ruts.

My workout today was 4 Day Split lower intensity step, 36 minutes, heart rate average 138, max heart rate 186, 215 calories, 2,938 steps. I then did the premix chest, shoulders, and triceps 38 minutes, 151 calories, 715 steps. This premix did not have a warm up or cool down. Total time was 74 minutes, calories burned 366. Tomorrow will be a hiit workout. I let my grandson sleep this morning so got a later start on my workout. I made dog treats and did some tasks while waiting.

I really liked the Madison Reed hair color. It was one of the few I had found as I looked for the best lower chemical hair colors. My hair turned out soft and I really like the color. I ordered online from Madison Reed. They offer helps and post videos etc.. You do sort of a survey for them to help you choose your color. It came in a box with two pair of gloves, a cap, shampoo, conditioner, and the color. Oh, and a cream to put around the edges to avoid staining skin ( I never had a problem with that ever) and a towelette to remove any that gets on the skin. I did check on places to buy and you can buy it at Ulta. Madison Reed has an auto ship program with discounts, but I don't like the idea of keeping up with auto ship items. The first purchase was free shipping. I will be buying it again. It did not itch, burn, and sting. No bumps or rash today. They do carry a semi permanent color and root touch up kit as well. I read someone saying they used the color on their roots and then the semi permanent to refresh the color on the ends.

Lori, on my rebounder I have to kind of pull up on each leg and turn it and it folds down. Not too difficult. I worked out this morning with limited space, dog, child, rebounder, step, and fit tower. I was step over and around obstacles :) My calves need more work, I could use a bit larger calves and ankles. I don't think that it will ever happen though. Boots are too wide and I feel a little odd with tiny calves and boots wide. My gladiator sandals and ankle straps always need more holes in them. That is awesome that your husband has done so well with the weight loss and is enjoying the bike riding so much. I have more equipment that I want to get for mine once we get the new belts on the tread climber. He is back to using it. The repair guy ordered the parts for it. He wants more weights and a bench.

Carolyn, that recipe looks good. I have Hiit 40/20 planned for tomorrow.

Valerie, I had not thought of freezing parsley. I buy a bunch of parsley and a bunch of cilantro about once every 3 weeks. I wrap paper towels around them and it seems to keep them dry and fresh longer. Encountering someone coming the wrong way at higher speeds would be frightening. Good that you came on to it after it had happened. I have a tendency to hike one shoulder or something. My husband is always trying to straighten them when he trims my hair for me. When I use my barbell I stand in front of the mirror and I have to work at it being level on both sides. I tend to have the left up higher so it is angled. It feels odd when I straighten out, so I know I am carrying myself wrong.

Deb, as posted above, I ordered the hair color direct from Madison Reed. I hope that you had a pleasant day.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. Just did not feel it.

Valerie, you seem to do a pretty good job keeping up with your DH..:). My one shoulder is definitely out of line...when I stand with my arms down by my side, one arm is definitely lower than the other. A chiropractor pointed that out to me once. She said it was from carrying a too heavy shoulder bag.

Carolyn, congratulations for finishing Meso 2! Now to the one with the very long rests between exercises. If you are impatient like a lot of us, you will fF and make those rests shorter.

Lori, great that you can do that Fit Tower without a tower. Nice ride! Bob is doing so well with his exercise and diet. I hope the shot works as well as the one you had before.

Diane Sue, have you tried the baby food dog treats yet? I like that they only have 2 or 3 ingredients. Thanks for the info on the hair dye. I will pass along to my cousin who really has bad reactions from the majority of hair dye out there. We have an Ulta so she can check for it there.

No real plans for the weekend, just agility class today. Today is John's birthday...

Take care,
