Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/5

Hi Everyone,

I went to work this afternoon. The roads are terrible, black ice every where.
I just drove very carefully and didn't have any trouble. I didn't work out this morning so I did Muscle Max this evening.

Lynda-I'll have to check out the DA article. I agree on the Isobel storyline being weird.
That's interesting about Norwegian. I took a year of Swedish in College and I thought it was easy too.

Josie-thanks, I would like to learn Spanish again. I took it for 4 years in high school and did pretty well with it. Unfortunately when I got out of high school I didn't have the chance to use it. I agree with Lori, I would never have guessed that English was your second language.

Lori-I'll have to look into the Pimsleur audible books. I've heard good things about them.

Valerie- I was never a fast runner, but I loved running distance. Unfortunately I started getting running injuries and gradually switched to biking more than running. The last marathon that I ran was in 2002. I walked a marathon in 2007. I'm looking at a new running shoe (Hoka One). I've heard good things about it, as far as being good for people who are prone to running injuries. I'm going to get a pair this spring and see if I can start running more again.

Good morning and Happy Hump Day!

We had a lake effect storm yesterday that went all over the area, bouncing back and forth between the cities and suburbs. Travel bans kept a lot of people from coming to work which was a challenge in itself for us to keep things running.

Valerie, cudos to you and your DH for all that you do, it is amazing!

Judy..."It is supposed to warm up-to 0 by noon"....LOL at your comment about warming up. I kept saying yesterday that we hoped it would get to double digits...and you hoped it would be over zero!

Garance, I need to go to Entertainment Weekly on line and read that DA article...hope you can get to it on line because I have no access to the actual paper...My cousin gave Rosetta Stone ( Italian) to her son for Christmas, who suddenly decided he wanted to learn to speak Italian. I never could figure out what their "secret" learning process was. Still waiting for him to open it and try it so I can find out what they do differently.

Edited to add: tried to find the article on line, could only get a video clip about the first show...

Josie, 2 weeks with the G'kids is a whole lot of workouts!

Lori, I am impressed that you do 2 workouts a day, I am hoping to start working out in the morning again, maybe this weekend...Sunday. Do you have the DA episode taped or DVR'd?

Work, then maybe agility class if it isn't cancelled. The trainer is one of those die hard people that will drive through anything to go to a dog event or class. We'll see. I haven't been to the Wed night class in over a month.

Stay warm, drive safely!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did XTrain Ch, Ba, Sh (51:15).

DH and I have done a lot of hikes on parts of the Appalachian Trail, which runs right through the next town over with Mt. Greylock. The serious hikers always stop at the local Stop 'n' Shop to shower and refuel their packs. The college also owns a forest (Hopkins forest named for an early President Mark Hopkins) and there is a hike you can take up in the trees on swinging bridges. It's really neat--created by a Williams alum who worked in tropical rainforests.

Valerie, Entertainment Weekly is a magazine with a lot of reviews of movies, television series, music, books, dvds, interviews--everything popular culture. I think you have to pay for it online, too, Deb, so maybe you could buy just one issue with the DA article. It's pretty much anywhere they sell magazines because it's very popular.

Judy, if you understand, speak Swedish, you can probably understand Norwegian and Danish, too. They are all closely related. Swedish is very clipped while Danish is sluggish and guttural, and Norwegian is somewhere in between.

Really no black ice here--just a lot of corrosive salt on our roads.

Good evening ladies...

This morning I did 30 minutes of STS plyo legs and tonight was P90x shoulders arms.

Deb...I love my morning workouts. If you notice though I do keep them around 30 minutes or less. If I go longer then I will be late for work and no way am I getting up earlier. I haven't really felt like running on TM lately and that also was about 30 mins. I have no guilt if I need to skip my evening one like last night! I have Downton on dvr. My plan is to watch it saturday.

Lynda...I have been to MT Greylock. Not to hike though. My dh and I belonged to a car club in the early 90's and one of the rides took us there. Was a beautiful ride. I live 2 miles from MT Wachuset and I hear it is beautiful to hike. One of these days I will get around to that!

Judy...thanks for the link. The temp was 0 this morning! Hurt to stay out side for any length. We have been lucky and no black ice. I like my double workouts but you and Valerie have me beat! Could never keep up withe the 2 of you!

Hi to Josie and Valerie!

Speaking of being beat... I did the whole Flextrain workout this afternoon, after splitting wood for an hour this morning. I am whipped! that is a great workout. triceps and abs will be noticeable tomorrow. the premix I did was easy compared to the full deal.

The PCT here is generally a long drive and a long walk to get to. there are some exceptions.... most trailhead access is from small towns near the foothills. forest service roads head into forest, then wilderness, generally plus/minus 20 miles. then usually another 8-10 miles of mostly uphill hiking to get to the PCT itself. there is a lot of elevation gain/ loss on the trail itself but coming down to towns to access re-supply points is no easy thing. it's not as remote in all of it's length but in WA most of it is a long hike. and of course, if you hike down to pick up supplies you need to hike back up after. so it can be 20 miles easily, assuming you can hitch a ride on the access roads which add another 10-20 miles. people really need to plan everything!

thanks Lynda... I'll look for Entertainment when I shop tomorrow.

Good morning and Happy Thursday....2 more days!

The trainer ended up cancelling class last night and I was so happy
icon_e_smile.gif
. Sat on the sofa with a throw, 2 dogs on my lap and watched a couple of episodes of Damages. Lovely.
Judy, thanks for the link, it was to subscribe to the online issue, I think I may just find one in a store and get the one issue though.

Garance, thanks, I think I will buy the one issue, something to read during lunch today.

Lori, as long as you are able to do 2 a day without injury etc I say go for it! I am so tired when I get home from work, ( and the time varies every day) that I could not count on doing a workout after work, and would end up doing nothing)...kind of like I have been doing for the past month. I plan on starting back on Sunday though.

Valerie, I have never attempted the whole Flextrain workout, only did premixes, so good job and cudos to all of you that can do that one in its entirety!

Josie, waiting for you to respond over on the lipstick thread ok? LOL...

Work, home, relax...that's the plan!

Stay warm.

I didn't match Cathe's weights on the whole thing but went heavier than I did in the premix. those rear delt flys ... not ready for 10's on those but 8's were OK. that is quite the ab workout but I liked it.

Deb, that's my plan too... I'll check out a copy of Entertainment Weekly at the store today.

I am enjoying doing two sessions of something a day. I do count yoga but there's such a time gap from early morning until before dinner that it doesn't seem like too much. off to class..

Hi Ladies,

I took a body pump class this morning at 6:45. I loved it and I like doing my workout early in the morning.

Valerie, I don't run anymore because I had two bad falls an decided to quit before I was ahead :). I do miss it and had started up again before I broke my foot. I had decent times during my good running days. My best marathon time was 3:52 and after that I kept it at 4:00 to 4:30 marathons.

Deb, I responded to the lipstick question ;). Glad that you did not have to go out last night.

Lori, I'm really liking T-25. I bought Ruthless at Walmart and did not get the schedule in the box :(. I read in the open discussion that this has happened to a lot of people. Could you make a copy for me and send it to my e-mail?

Judy, I'm going to check out the running shoes that you posted about. I usually wear the Nike Air Max because I have very flat feet and those work for me.

Garance, it sounds beautiful where you live :)

Have a great afternoon!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit (38:53). I intended to do the premix with Core 1, but forgot to hit the premix button. Maybe a Freudian slip? It felt good to be finished early so I didn't even try to do an add-on.

Lori, yes, you can drive to the top of Mt. Greylock, but there are several hikes that include part of the elevation. I am definitely a morning workout person too. I can't wait, though, for the days to get longer and warmer, so I can take Max for walks after dinner.

I love my subscription to EW. I practically read it from cover to cover, except the stuff about games and I particularly like that it is a weekly magazine chocked full of recommendations and reviews instead of celebrity trash. I look at People at the dentist and hair salon (guilty pleasure) but can't imagine getting a subscription to that. I feel guilty about my pile of New Yorkers. I just can't read all of the good articles in them and am always several magazines behind.

Deb, that sounds like a lovely way to spend an evening.

Valerie, I can match Cathe on weights on Flextrain except for those rows. I use 20s, and I'm usually panting after the first set and dreading the second set. Once that is over, I feel like the rest of the workout flies by. I have been doing it every Friday for quite awhile now. I still love it.

Josie, it is very beautiful here, and the summers are very much a tourist season because of the theater, Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, cabaret, and the art museums--the Clark, WCMA, and Mass MOCA. Then the fall brings all of the leaf peepers in their RVs.

Hi to Judy!

I still enjoy running but stick to 35 minutes on the treadmill. DH runs occasionally outdoors with me on trails. it's softer than concrete or asphalt but easier to trip or slip. mostly I make a point of mixing activities up to avoid repetitive use injuries. nothing really bothers me from running unless I don't do it regularly... so I do it once or twice a week.

Lynda, I didn't find entertainment weekly at the grocery today ...even asked for help but no one knew what it was and thought it was somehow connected to the TV show Entertainment Tonight. Agree with you on People and other similar mags. I don't recognize the "famous people" in them!

Deb, if you find that magazine, tell me where and what's on the cover.

I use 20's on one arm rows too, forgot about that one. I think I could move up but no hurry. this was my first full workout on this disk. if I burn myself out on one exercise, it will come back to haunt me later. I was tired when I was done but didn't get sore today surprisingly.
I haven't looked yet, but did someone do a workout sheet for Flextrain?

Josie, those are impressive times! Be proud. I never ran more than a 10 K.

Good afternoon ladies!

This morning I did Ruthless Wicked Lower Body. Not an overly intense workout but I could feel the burn at times and thought it was a great morning workout. Tonight I am going to sub a heavy bag workout for P90x's kenpo.

Lynda...I match Cathe's weight in Flextrain except for those rows too! I use 20lbs and that is fine with me. I too dread the second round on those.

Josie...I will email the schedule to you. The schedules were not printouts included with the set. They are all on the first disc. I needed my IT department to find them for me! If you put the disc in and click on my computer...right click on the drive and the contents with the PDF's should show up. Even my IT guy had never seen this scenario before. I find some of the workouts are really hard while others are not. All and all I like them.

I am really curious now on the lipstick thread!

Valerie...glad you are enjoying Flextrain. I really like the Ab section in this one a lot. I love the flow of it and the different moves with the weights.

Deb...I love those kind of nights! Glad you enjoyed it. I love doing doubles. Like Valerie, I feel there is such a time span from the first to the second it just does not seem like 2 in one day for me.

Judy.. we are having a heat wave...was 8 degrees this morning when I left for work. Hope you are staying warm!

Well, I've looked ....and am still looking. Usually someone does printable workout sheets for the new workouts but I am not finding them. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I must be searching for the wrong terms.

Hi Everyone,

We're having a heat wave just like Lori! 19 degrees right now

This morning I did Muscle Endurance.

Lori- I like the idea of doing 2 workouts a day. I tend to do most of my workouts in the morning now but sometimes I enjoy doing an evening workout too.
The past couple of days the temps have been above 0 and it hasn't been that hard to be outside, but when it was -10 below I was miserable! I just wanted to stay inside and hibernate.

Josie-those are good marathon times! My best was 4:36. Here is the link for the running shoes:

Hoka One One Running Technology | Official Site

I'll have to look at the Ruthless workouts, they sound good.

Lynda-I really like Entertainment Weekly too. I purchased the download version with the DA article. It is a good quality magazine.

Hi to Deb & Valerie!

Judy

Happy Friday!

We still have snow on the ground here...look at what happened to our beloved Niagara Falls:

http://news.yahoo.com/niagara-falls-fre ... 01177.html

Valerie, I didn't get a chance to get to a store yesterday for the magazine, but will try later on my way home from work. I don't think I ever saw a workout sheet for Flextrain.

Josie, those body pump classes look like so much fun. I bought 3 of the Les Mills Body Pump DVD's but they were really boring. I think the classes would be better. Thanks for the lipstick recommendation.

Hi to Garance, Lori, and Judy,

I have Kylee entered in a dog show tomorrow, then a memorial mass to go to Sunday, otherwise, no plans. Anyone else have any exciting plans for the weekend?

Work, then home to crash!

Take care and stay warm!

Thanks for looking too, Deb. this one is not that complicated and it's clear what weight Cathe uses. I like a printout because if reminds me of "which workout" , and what dumbbells I need right at the beginning and what exercise follows what so I don't have to see them do one and then back up the disk. guess I'll make my own list but that will be nowhere as good.

Great pics of Niagara falls.... I've never been there but it brings home the idea of "cold" for those of us living where 20 is "cold". I need to read about those round ice balls they show in lake Michigan. I lived in Milwaukee for 20+ years but only saw the lake a few times.

Judy 4:36 is none too shabby either... just finishing a marathon is an accomplishment, and in 10 minute miles. I feel like a wuss because I never convinced myself to try one.... thought about it but never committed. same way with triathalons. I feel like I could do the biking/run part, but I'd drown during the swim!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Anyone who can finish a marathon or half-marathon, much less do it in the times you guys have recorded, is, in my view, crazy fit. I only jogged in my 30s and was never very fast, just trying to log about 5 miles a day and burn some calories.

Members of the Downton Abbey cast are on last week's cover of EW. It's a weekly and I just received my copy for next week today in the mail, so maybe you won't be able to find last week's issue. I was in Rite-aid this morning, and they still had the DA issue.

Wow Deb, Niagara Falls pics are amazing. I went there a long time ago (did all the touristy things like the Maid of the Mist and those caves where you can really get close to the falls) and it really is an awe-inspiring natural wonder. Good luck with Kylee on the dog show.

I'm off to see Inside Llewyn Davis this weekend, a Coen Bros. film, and probably another comfort Sunday meal.

It's in the 30s here, and apparently it's going way up in the 40s tomorrow, but with a lot of rain.

Enjoy the weekend!

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did 1 hour of spinning. I think tomorrow will be a rest day.
We'll be going to FIL's early to take care of things then maybe do some shopping. Nothing too special going on this weekend.

Deb-Good luck to you and Kylee at the dog show! Hope you can post some pictures!

Valerie-Thank you, I was pretty happy with my marathons at the time. Maybe I'll try it again someday. I feel the same about triathlons, it's the swimming that is the problem for me. I had found a swim coach and was going to start working on swimming last year but there was so much going on with FIL that I just dropped it. Maybe sometime in the future I'll revisit that.

Lynda-It's in the 30's here too, and pouring rain at the moment. Hard to believe it's over 50 degrees warmer than it was at the beginning of the week.

Hi to Lori & Josie

Have a nice weekend!

Judy

Good morning and Happy Weekend!

Getting a little nervous about the show today, but that's normal for me.

I agree with Lynda, anyone that even attempts a marathon is an " athlete" in my book!

Valerie, I went to a Rite Aid and they didn't have the EW issue that had the DA article, they had a Special Edition one with reviews of 2013 shows etc. Not sure if they already sold out of the other one, or hadn't gotten it in yet. I will try Walgreen's later today.

Garance & Lori, ( our local movie buffs !) what's up with the movie called Frozen? I know a young teen that is going today to see it for the 5th time!

Garance, enjoy your movie this weekend.

Judy, I'm not sure if we will film at the show today, I'll see if John will bring his iPad.

It's about 43 here now, everything is melting and there is run off everywhere. Flooding is now the big issue.

Hi to Josie,

Take care,

Will check back later after the show...

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday ended up being a complete rest day for me. Going to do butts and guts and a heavy bag workout in place of p90x legs and back. I think this is going to be a great (and harder) workout. So I guess all and all I am loosely following p90x's schedule!

Deb....good luck at the show. It has been a while since you have done one. I have asked someone I work with to bring in his old copy of Entertainment Weekly for me. Hoping he remembers. I have not seen Frozen but just about everyone I know especially with kids have. It is an animated disney movie. It looks really cute and has great reviews. I saw Niagara Falls on the news. The pictures (although frozen) were still amazing to me. You know its cold when Niagara Falls freezes!!!!!

Valerie...I have looked for workout sheets for Flex train and do not find anything. I think I just saw someone asking on a thread so perhaps one will be forthcoming. I like using sheets to mark reps/weights.

I agree with you all...anyone that can run a marathon is an athlete for sure!!!!! The strength, endurance and mind set needed to do one is incredible.

Today is a house max day, errands then plan to watch Downton later this evening.

Have a great weekend all!
