Good morning,

Not as cold here today, it is in the 30's but is supposed to drop again tomorrow. We have a match at the dog club this morning which I am going to go to for practice with Kylee. I have her entered in a big AKC show next weekend. I have not trained with her in a month.

Valerie, My DH is the same, he doesn't like to carry any things in his pockets either so I am the one that holds on to any extra stuff we have to have, and he teases me all the time about how heavy my purse is!

Lori, I used to sub Cathe's KPC for P90X Kenpo when I did the P90 workouts. I really didn't like the P90 kickbox workout either.

Garance, nice job on the hike! That must have burned some serious calories! Enjoy your comfort food dinner!

Judy, I sure hope that your DH and SIL are able to get some help in for FIL and in the meantime you are able to research a facility (hopefully close to your house) for future.

My liver values were still not back to 100% normal, one went back, one is still slightly elevated. The DR believes it is from the infection, and just wants to watch it, I will get a recheck in 60 days.

Hi to Josie!

Take care and stay warm.

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did RK with 1 lb. gloves (55:16). I am still enjoying my little rotation, so why change it?

It's beautiful here today (41 degrees and sunny), but they keep saying it will start raining later.

Deb, are you going to watch Downton Abbey tonight? 4th season begins. I will be sure to record it in case we are late coming home from dinner.

Judy, they keep reporting on the Midwest weather because it's so horrendous. Also because there is some big playoff game with the Green Bay Packers and the 49ers with wind chill temps in the -50 degree range. I don't know why anyone would actually go to the game when they can sit at home in a warm room and watch it high def. Boggles my mind.

Stay warm!

Hi,

Garance, I ordered the DVD's for DA season 4 and I think I will just wait for them to come. They are shipping January 28th. I will be a little behind, but I like watching it on DVD, you can stop when you want, or watch multiple at one sitting etc.

Good afternoon ladies!

Quite day today. Did P90x yoga for the first 50 mins. This dvd is 90 mins and that is way too much yoga for me. Where I stop I feel I get a great session in so all is good.

Yeah! Downton Abbey! My husband does not watch so I am recording to watch later in the week.

Lynda...Glad you like Rockout. I am still feeling those blue firewalkers from yesterday! Looks like no avoiding the rain. :(

Judy...hoping your weather improves. Been ages since I have done Kick Max. Next time I will sub this one in for Kenpo.

Hi to Valerie and Josie!

Just back from a hike 3 hrs 20 min. not hard but we went fast. a river walk with some noticeable ups and downs and pretty cold for us wimps, 27 degrees. some snow but just patchy and old/ crusty stuff. more snow up higher but not easy to get there now. a long walk and probably a lot of icy old crud for a ways before getting to anything remotely skiable. or "snow-shoeable". Lynda must be nice to have enough terrain to 'shoe around your own property! all nice fresh powdery snow is lovely, but rain on top of it makes it into a heavy sloppy mess. don't envy you.

talked to my brother ( Wisconsin) this morning and he's getting everyone ready for the cold blast. he runs errands and favors for a lot of old people who won't be going out for a few days.
m I put DA on my Netflix queue... looking forward to it!. there was a Marathon "Breaking Bad" on one channel for 2 nights... I didn't hear about it until it has > half over. some limited commercials

Hi Everyone,

We have about 8 inches of snow on the ground now, it looks like we'll have 4 more before tomorrow morning. I'm off work tomorrow and DH will probably work from home. It's actually kind of nice to be at home and getting caught up on things.

This afternoon I did Muscle Endurance and Core 2. I have season 4 of Downton Abbey on Amazon, I think the first episode will be available early this week.

Deb-hopefully we can get FIL into someplace close to here. SIL has been suggesting moving him to a facility in Colorado, but with his heart condition I think the altitude would do him in. He would probably have to use an oxygen tank to breath there.

Lynda-Tuesday it is supposed to be dangerously cold here. I made emergency kits for our cars, mylar blankets, hand and foot warmers, extra gloves, and water. We aren't even sure we'll be going to work on Tuesday, but I want to be prepared if we do.

Lori-90 minutes sounds like a long time for yoga, that would be too much for me too.

Valerie-great job on the hike! How many miles did you go?

Hi to Josie,

Judy

Good morning and Happy Monday! NOT!

Very windy here, last night and this morning, it feels like the roof is coming off. Went to the match at our club yesterday, Kylee and I did not do well, it was very crowded, she was intimidated by all the dogs around her and she didn't pay attention to me like she usually does. We'll just have to see how it goes this coming Saturday at the real show.

Lori, one thing I did not like about P90X was the long yoga workouts, I don't see how anyone can do that for 90 minutes! I found that PBS Masterpiece theatre lets you watch the episodes after the fact on line...last night's is supposed to be available until 3/9 so I will watch it tonight after dinner, in place of Damages, which I am hooked on now!

Valerie, nice hike/workout. I would bet you burn a lot of calories on those hikes.

Judy, how do you get season 4 on Amazon? I asked them if Prime members could view and got the run around, basically a "no answer" answer. There are 3 clips with previews, but no actual episode. .if you find it available, can you let me know? We are also supposed to get hit with a lot of snow today and tomorrow. Lucky you that you are home today.

Work, then home to Hopefully watch DA tonight on PBS online.

Stay warm!

This particular hike didn't have any mileage posted. I think it was 5-6 miles round trip. maybe a little more. It took us about 90 min going in. ate a snack and stopped a couple places on the way back out looking at eagles, water and hoping for something more exciting but no luck except a dipper. ... a small aquatic bird.

A local woman is giving a talk tonight... she walked the pacific crest trail (PCT)this summer for the second time, 2650 miles, in 60 days plus a few hours. she averaged 44 miles a day, walking from 5 am until 11 pm. that is so stunning that it's almost unimaginable. she did it without support, i.e., no one carrying stuff for her or meeting her often with supplies so she would not have to carry much. everyone has to set up re-supply points along the route for food, clothes, etc. just organizing that part is complicated. the southern CA section is hot/desert-y, while the northern parts are snowy/icy. I've done some big sections of it over the years, but NOTHING like that.... not even a blip compared to that. wow.

Hope everyone is weathering the cold and snow. glad I don't need to contend with it constantly.

we are going to go mountain bike somewhere today since the rest of the week looks warmer and wetter.
Deb... I'd think dogs get out of practice just like people and you two haven't 'worked" together for a while. hopefully she'll remember her lessons this weekend.

Yoga has quite a "range" of difficulty. 60 is enough for me but I could go much longer with the kind of movements we do. not sure I'd want to, but it would be OK.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Lean Legs and Abs (48:33).

It was so warm last night into today that there is almost no snow left. Unbelievable! Raining and then temperature is supposed to plummet. This winter has been something of a roller coaster.

I watched the first two hours of DA last night and found it a bit slow and meandering from one mini confrontation to another--sort of like a soap opera. I guess the writer must try to patch together something new given the death of two major characters last year. I think Edith is headed for possible trouble and the writer might be borrowing from Ken Follett--just a hunch.

Philomena is excellent. A nice little film based on a true story.

Valerie, I think I told you about that memoir by Cheryl Strayed on her hike on the PCT (WILD). I think they are making a movie based on it. She was a novice hiker, but she did it all alone too. It's a really interesting memoir with a lot of back story to explain why she wanted to do the trail.

Judy, maybe Lean Legs and Abs would be a good substitute for the STS leg workouts. No sliding disks and a nice varied workout. Your "Arctic vortex" is headed our way.

I clearly have no patience for yoga. I have tried a few times but just get bored.

Stay warm everyone!

went mt biking this morning on our newly tuned up bikes... what a difference! Amazing how much better they worked. kind of wet and sloppy though, and a lot of horse traffic over the weekend left a lot of "debris" that couldn't be avoided. yes, we usually hose the bikes off after riding and today was hosing for sure.

Everyone in my yoga class had read "Wild" which was hilarious since we are all women of various ages but never talked about books before. I liked the book... wish I could get to hear this other lady's talk but too far away and too late.
she didn't take any detours ... some years the route is clear but that's why people start in the south and trek north... to follow the retreating snow pack. from "Wild" you get a clear idea of the resupply points needed and of how most people have a more leisurely pace. 44 miles a day average of course means some days more than that.
yes, a movie... I heard Reese Witherspoon would play cheryl. hope it doesn't get too "hollywood-ized" and get silly.

Hope you all get thru the unpleasant weather cycle soon and without any big issues.

Good morning,

What lovely weather we are all having! We did get the wind and all that they described, but at least the snowfall wasn't as bad as they predicted. Of course, it is supposed to snow all day today so who knows?

Valerie, that woman sounds amazing! That will be you and your DH in a decade or so! Of course you will be carrying his stuff LOL...Nothing like a well tuned bike!

Garance, watched DA online at PBS....they have the episodes available for a about 6 weeks after airing...I agree with you about Edith...it doesn't sound like she is headed to anything good with this guy she is seeing.

Judy...thanks for the link...see above...I saw that Amazon is charging for the episodes,( kind of strange since we already pay for Prime).. so decided to watch online on PBS. Can use the iPad etc so all is good until I get my DVD's They are going to ship on January 28th.

They closed the I-90 from Buffalo to the Pennsylvania state line last night from 8:00 pm to this morning.. How scary is that if you were still on it?

Hi to Josie, and Lori,

Work, then home to hibernate!

Deb, it's an incredible feat of endurance and planning. DH and I have done 50 mile sections of the PCT during vacations but we honestly never wanted to do more and never had long enough time off work.... not sure I'd do it anyway. you would need to plan the entire trip's worth of food and supplies and ship them to pick up points along the trail where they're held until you show up to claim them. I would love to hear details about how she did it.
we did several of the more scenic sections in WA and OR and a small piece in CA. some parts are lovely, some are hard and inaccessible some years if the snow pack is slow to melt out, which happens unpredictably some years. and the opposite, some sections get dry if the snowpack is low. This same lady is setting up to run a 100 mile marathon in Hawaii. the heat and humidity in Hawaii was( for me) not conducive to exercise! can't imagine a 100 mile run...

How's everyone doing with the nasty weather? Hoping everyone is doing OK.

Good Morning Everyone,

It's currently -14 degrees with a wind chill of -40. It is supposed to warm up-to 0 by noon. DH worked from home yesterday and is doing so today. I am scheduled to go in at 1. Hoping they close the store early and tell me not to come in..

Yesterday I did a 90 minute indoor ride, and got 30 miles in. I also did Core Max 1.
I found a new iPhone app-Duolingo. It's a free language course. I'm going to work on French first then Spanish. I took both in high school but that was a long time ago:eek: and I never really got to use them.

Deb-I didn't know that PBS showed the episodes of DA for free. Maybe I can cancel my TV pass and start watching them that way. I did watch the first episode last night and it looks like it will be an entertaining season.
I hope you aren't getting the weather we had but it sounds like you are. Stay warm and enjoy hibernating for a few days!

Valerie-50 miles of hiking is incredible! I have some friends back in Iowa that are ultra runners and I was always in awe of them. I was training for marathons at the time and they were talking about 50 and 100 milers. A marathon was like a warm up to them.

Hi to Lori, Lynda, and Josie!

Judy

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did PRS #1 (53:42).

7 degrees here, and a nasty wind chill. No snow, though.

If you are DA diehards, there is a very big article on this season in Entertainment Weekly. I am glad I read it, because now I think the season will be good. No spoilers, but some really interesting plot lines and a promise that no major characters will be killed off. I really thought the first episode was a bit boring and the story line involving Carson's old friend and Isobel was just weird.

This weather has really fouled up travel. My widower BIL took his two teenagers to the Bahamas over the Christmas break, and he is still not home--they were supposed to be back by Sunday night. They canceled all Jet Blue flights into Logan, so they found a flight into Orlando where they are currently trying to get another flight to Boston. What fun!

Valerie, 50 miles of hiking is terrific! Deb is hilarious about you being the packhorse.

Judy, I have thought about doing Rosetta stone for my French, which is now pretty rusty. I had to have 3 languages for my doctorate in Renaissance lit--French, Italian, and Latin. I also took Norwegian in high school and that was, by far, the easiest language to learn.

Stay warm!

When DH and I did sections of the PCT we'd take about a week to do 50 miles..... nothing like this lady doing 44 miles in one day! but we were there for the wilderness experience and would do side trips, weren't there just to cover miles. we'd take pics, look for animals, just a different approach.
It's a bit of a complicated set up since you need to drive 2 cars to where you want to end up and leave one there, then take one car (with both of you in it) to where you start. and then the reverse after you're done. Depending on trailhead location it could be many hundreds of miles of driving If we'd had hiking friends to help us out with the drop off & pick up, it might have been easier, but we didn't. you needed to trust someone would be there to pick you up and not forget!
packs and supplies used to weigh a WHOLE LOT more than they do now too. Gear weighed MUCH more and was less flexible, plus we were in for the experience and didn't go "all out" ...light and fast like so many people do now. Our packs are lighter now too and we hope to do more backpacks. the last couple years we did more day hiking. so... we did significant trips but nothing to remotely compare to what this lady did.

We are not in the arctic weather. it pretty much didn't get across the rockies. we had cold clear weather over the weekend but now are back in the rain. very wet, and about 40, typical winter here.

Another former French student. gosh I was awful. I took latin in HS and loved it but it wasn't spoken really. I never got even simple French. never could understand or make the sounds come out. I tried but no.

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not posting as often. I had to recoup from having the kids here for 2 weeks, I miss them though :) I started T-25 yesterday and today I went spinning.

I also took French and Italian in high school and Italian in College, but lost most of it due to not having any one to practice with. I do understand when people are talking, but I could not for complete sentences if my life depended on it.

Judy, I can help you with your Spanish if you ever have a question. English is my second language. When I was running marathons, one of my goals was to run an ultra, but never got to do it. I ran 12 marathons and hundreds of other races (5k's, 10k's and half marathons).

Deb, no nasty weather here ;).

Hi to Valerie, Lori and Garance!

Josie

Good evening ladies!!

Ohhhh so cold here yet it is even colder where you are Judy!

This morning I did a Ruthless workout Hardcore Circuit. I am really liking these workouts for the morning. Tonight was going to be STS plyo legs however I got home and my husband was home early and had a glass of wine ready for me. So needless to say no workout. Going to try plyo legs in the morning.

Garance...terrible about your BIL. Been watching this on the news and seeing all the people stranded at Logan. Going to try an pick up Entertainment magazine to read the article. Still have not watched the opener yet.

Valerie...very impressive doing 50 miles. Would take me a month or more to do that! My ribs still hurt from P90x yoga that I did on Sunday.

Josie...I really like T25 and thought they make a great morning workout for me. Let me know your thoughts. I know you have done Insanity. Would never have guessed English is your second language.

Judy...I will look up that app. Last year I purchased the Spanish audible books by Pimsleur. His thought is you learn better by listening and repeating out loud. I bought 4 phases each having 30, 30 minute lessons. Once you have mastered one lesson then you move on to the next. I loved it but when my husband broke his ankle and I needed to drive him to work I could not listen to my lessons. When I start up again I'll have to start from the beginning.

Deb...sorry that Keegan did not do well at practice! Hopefully when the competition comes he will be better. Driving last night was tough here. Black ice everywhere.

Have a great night!

How times change... when I was young the only "language other than English I heard was German. no one spoke Spanish or French. my struggles with French were probably an indication that I had a hearing deficit even back then, because spoken , it all ran together into babble for me. I had to drop the class because I could read it but couldn't understand spoken French no matter how much time I spent in language lab.

Josie & Judy how come you quit running distance races? I love running but am slow and never could get training mileage up very much.... I'd go up and then get sick and get set back to under 5 miles, over and over. I always believed you needed to be very well balanced biomechanically to do repetitive movements over extended miles like marathons, and certainly anything longer. Hiking, even with a heavy pack, was different for me and I could do that without negative consequences. Everyone becomes a packhorse when backpacking.

speaking of running, did yoga this morning, 35 on the treadmill tonight, Core 1, and 2 sets of 40 knee push ups. I engage more back muscles with those than with toe pushups so I like to do both.

Lynda, what is Entertainment Weekly? a magazine? newspaper column? Gosh, Orlando doesn't sound like a bad place to be compared to Boston, especially with the weather a mess.
