Good morning!

Workout done, starting another week that I hopefully can complete. Spelt churning in the bread maching. Now to get something to eat.

The play we saw yesterday ( "Third" ), as pretty good. Then we went out for BBQ...I should not have done that. Back on track with the eating plan starting today.

Valerie, I try to limit the caffine. We use a 50/50 mix in the coffee maker in the morning, then I switch to decafe when I go to work. It's still probably too much. Maybe I will try less again, work my way down to total decafe and see what happens. You would think that if you have not had any caffine for 12 hours, it would be out of your system, but maybe it's not. If I lived where you are, I would be wearing a hat every day. or a hood like you said. Water and humidity are the killers for hair.

Joan, that filing crap is just that, crap. I am not sure how they get away with this stuff. I wonder what is going to happen with our retur, cause I am sure our accountant files more than 100 returns. I'll have to bring this up to DH. When you say your clients have to e-file, does it mean you e-file for them, or that they actually have to do something? Our accountant e-filed for us last year, I'm pretty sure.

Hi to Garance, Josie, & Cathy...

Stay warm and dry!

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Booty Barre (63 min.).

I am definitely on the mend with my cold, so the cold-eez must shorten a cold's duration.

I watched the Social Network last night, and while I appreciated the snappy dialogue, I didn't like any of the characters. I also re-watched Inception, and was much less confused this time around. I also found Leonardo di Caprio very compelling, but I wish he wasn't always playing a tormented figure. He definitely does not use Botox--that furrow between his brows is about as deep as it can get.

Deb, are you freezing too? It's not expected to go above 7 tomorrow, and it will plummet sub-zero tonight. Yikes! Feel like I am back in Minnesota, where I grew up. No advice on caffeine here. I have a strong dose in the morning and another big dose at noon and don't have any trouble sleeping.

Joan, how many calories do you think you would lose on? Are you maintaining on 1700 or creepinig up? If you are maintaining on 1700, then you should figure out whether you could eliminate 200 calories per day and see if that shakes things up.

Josie, I really envy your workouts. I just plain could not do them (sigh!).

Hi to Valerie and Cathy!

Deb I efile for my clients. About 30% already efiled but 100% will this year. When everyone in the US efile two weeks worth of clients on Feb 15th will it overload the system?

Garance I maintain on 1700-1900 calories. I would lose on 1450 calories about a pound a week but if I eat that everyday I get hungry and overeat once or twice and don't lose. I need to eat 1150-1250 and every third or fourth day bump it to 1700-1900 calories so my average is 1450 calories. I don't know why that works better but it does. I have started doing that yesterday. Nutrisystem is about 1400 calories a day with required add ins. I must pick the higher calorie NS meals because it is supposed to be closer to 1250. I will go back to the way I was eating and losing a pound a week. At least I stayed the same this week.

I do vary speed on my walking but still not that fast. Music is 126-180bpm. Some days I use music 160-180bpm if I want to get 3 miles in a little faster.

It's snowing here but I expect only a couple of inches not 5.

Joan

Good morning,

Played with Grace this morning. It's a balmy -5 here right now. We didn't even think of taking Keegan for a walk this morning. He will have to use the yard. I let him out a few minutes ago and he proceeded to go to the end of the patio and started barking. He didn't "do" anything. Of course he knew I would not let him stay out there barking so the neighbors could get pissed.

Garance, glad the cold is going away, DH has one again, I hope I don't get this one too.

Joan, I think you would like the I-Treads, they are all interval type, could shake things up a bit. She gives numbers for walking, jogging, and running so all of them can be used no matter what you are doing on the treadmill. Also, there are 35, 45 and 60 minute ones available. You don't need an iPod, you can burn them on a CD and play them on a CD player near your treadmill.

Valerie, did it dry up there yet?

Hi to Josie, and Cathy,

BRRRRR...I'm FREEZING!!

Good morning,

We only got about and inch of snow but I cancelled my dm doctors appt. I need sidewalks to be clear. It's supposed to be 40 degrees Friday so I rescheduled.

My treadmill has a port to plug in ipod so you can use that speaker.

Weigh in of 165.4 down .2lb.

Joan

we had a dry day on saturday, but it's raining again today. saturday we split, chopped and stacked wood. It was a BIG upper body workout. a lot of walking back and forth to the woodpile to stack. DH hauls the wood cart with the mower but I walk it. It's interesting to observe that every piece of wood gets handled 3-4 times, so it means between the two of us we lifted about half of a huge tree. more today if it dries out a little. It's about 45 degrees, typical winter weather here.

sunday I was going to do a #33 back/ bicep but I could tell from the warm up weights that I needed a recovery day so did bike, treadmill, and coremax instead.

Our dining room floor is finished and looks very nice. moved all the furniture back in except for the shelving I'd had glassware on. DH thinks we should get a china cabinet but I think the room looks too formal already so I'm not sure that's a good plan. glad we did it, but I need to soften the look and make it less formal looking. any ideas? I'm a crummy decorator.

Josie, I'm using splenda. I think it's the best of the bunch and don't find I need much of it. I like agave or honey better but the almond milk is slightly sweet and that helps. I was using a good 100 calories worth of agave before.
Lynda glad to hear the cold has retreated. I don't think I'll get any of the other movies before the AA's. netflix waits are substantial and a couple aren't even available yet.

Deb be careful. I've been able to avoid catching colds from DH by being diligent with hand washing and not touching my face unless I've washed. doesn't always work but it's worth a try. Dogs are so funny... they know how to play their owners!
I need a good 12 hours for caffeine to wear off. I'm a "slow metabolizer" so when I make my latte I use 1 teaspoon of "real" coffee and a scoop and a half of decaf. and that's enough for me to feel it. some days I have a little more, if we split a starbucks double shot. definitely not every day. If I exercise heavily it seems to help burn it off.

Hi Ladies,

I went spinning on Saturday and I finally got on my bike and went for a 36 mile ride on Sunday. We had head winds both ways and it made it a bit harder, but I made it. It felt great to ride a gain. I guess I owe it to the BHIP program. They make us do a lot of squats and lunges and core work.

The weather here has been great. It was 45 this morning, but it will be going up to the mid 70's.

I will be back later, I have a busy day ahead of me.

Hi Cathy, Joan, Valerie and Deb!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did KCM's double bootcamp circuit (55 min.).

Deb, I would feel your pain if I were not numb from the cold. I get in the car at noon and the temperature is zero. Lovely! I'm actually nice and warm with my Wintersilks, furry boots and three layers, the top being a big shawl sweater I knitted several years ago. Max does not seem too bothered by the cold--or at least he is reluctant to come in.

Valerie, I did not have a wait on Inception. It was ready for the taking. Very interesting editorial yesterday by Frank Rich on True Grit and the Social Network. Except that he really does not get the Coen brothers' version of the film. I'd write a comment, but it looks like he already has a long thread.

Joan, 40 degrees sounds like a heat wave! We have piles and piles of snow, and now we might get another load of the stuff on Wednesday.

Josie, I don't even want to know what the weather is like in lalaland. I might turn green.

Tomorrow I am off because I will be taking DH for his colonoscopy bright and early in the morning. He opted for the jug. He's sleeping upstairs tonight.

Hi Ladies,

My legs feel like wet noodles. Today's workout consisted of the following:

10 dead lifts with 65lbs barbell, up 40 steps on our tippy toes, 5 push-ups, down the stairs,
9 dead lifts and so on. I ended up doing 55 dead lifts, 50 push-ups and 10 stairs. It took me 23 minutes to finish. I was soaking wet when I finished.

I don't know what tomorrow will bring!

Josie

Tuesday

Good morning,

I just finished STS Total Body, Lower body pre-mix. I have been subbing leg extensions and leg curls for the lunges and my knee is thanking me. She does an awful lot of deadlifts in this workout for some reason. The whole warm up is basically deadlifts, and then there are 3 different tri sets that have deadlifts.

Its a balmy 30 degrees here right now, I'm afraid I may see people out in shorts today! :D

Joan, cool about your treadmill and the speaker. That's a great option that I think I would keep in mind if I ever replace my treadmill.

Valerie, WoodMax is one of the best circuit workouts around! :D I will be taking your advice and really cutting back on the caffine. I didn't realize it could stay in your system for 12 hours.. I have Stevia powder. it is so concentrated, that you use about an eighth of a teaspoon in a cookie recipe. Here is a link to the site. They always e-mail be low glycemic recipes: http://www.steviva.com/

Josie, good for you for getting back on your bike. I am so envious of the weather you are having now. That workout sounds like a true bootcamp! What is the eating plan like?

Garance, there is some kind of "formula" that you are supposed to use for dogs outside in winter....like a degree a minute. So if it is 10 degrees, they should not be out for more than 10 minutes, something like that. They can get frostbite too. Good luck with your DH and his procedure. I feel for him.

Take care and stay warm! :)

raining again so no wood chopping, the plan monday. we kept thinking it would stop but every time we headed out, it rained harder. so, did disk #35. wanted to do chest presses while DH could spot me so still have # 34 to do, then plyo legs and I'm done...again. this was back up to 8 reps. I was able to do 90% in all but the chest press, 65 lbs, 85%. I bought velcro wrist weights, 2.5 lbs and those are working nicely as a transition weight. I can't go from 20 to 25 lb dumbbells easily. the gloves are only 1 lb so hoping the wrist weights at 2.5 will make it possible.

Lynda, best of luck for DH and his procedure. maybe it was yesterday? It makes the rest of the week a walk in the park!
Deb, my mother always had problems with caffeine. when I started noticing it too, I cut back the amount and the time of day I'd drink. It's a simple thing that's worth a try. If it doesn't make any difference, go back to normal. I still have trouble sleeping some nights so it's not ALL caffeine but it was a big factor. since DH can't either (migraines) it's not inconvenient. we don't even have chocolate desserts at night because that bit of caffeine was noticeable..... not that we have many desserts to begin with.
I have a small box of stevia but it doesn't taste sweet to me. I like equal and splenda better. don't really "like" them but oatmeal needs sweetener so for a while I'll use them. .
wow Josie, that sounds tough! 65 lbs is plenty for deadlifts. that's what I'm using now. Isn't it amazing how the headwind can switch direction? 36 is a good ride after a long break. we only did 20 and that was good. really not cycling weather most days here. a helmet cover has turned out to be very useful in cutting wind chill and not expensive. DH got some of the shoe covers which he likes. I wore light hiking boots. a neck gaiter helped too. lots of heat gets lost from the neck area.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

Took DH in for his colonoscopy, which went well--one polyp, although this was true last time, but it was precancerous.

Thanks, Deb, for the information on dogs and temperatures, although what happens when you go below zero? Max is out a lot because of being DH's farm companion, but after the morning chores, he loves to sleep on his side of the truck. He loves going anywhere in the truck and whines if he thinks he might be left behind.

My students are now doing their oral presentations. Yesterday, it was Spielberg and Paul T. Anderson. The Spielberg one was excellent, the Anderson one was a mess, which did not surprise me, because Anderson's films are a Freudian nightmare of castrating fathers, incest, misogyny, porn, and a lot of obscene language. Today it's Hawks and Kubrick.

Much warmer here today--close to 30 degrees, which is a 40 degree turnaround from yesterday.

Josie, are you sure you aren't joining the Marines?

I thought dogs were generally OK if they stayed outside, that it was the going back and forth from inside warmth and to outdoor cold was what prevented them from acclimating.... not that I'd keep a dog outside all winter! some breeds don't get a heavier coat like others do. even my indoor-outdoor pampered cat gets a much heavier coat in winter. he looks twice as big!

that's the benefit of getting scoped, I mean at least you know it was worth the headache. . My DH always a polyp or two. bad family history.

Lynda, you were right about Inception. I swear it had a "very long wait" when I looked the other day, but this morning, no wait so I popped it toward the top of my queue. The Town was available too. sometimes I swear you put it to the top while there's no wait, and the next time you check the queue it shows "very long wait".

Wednesday

Good morning!

Breakfast done, played with Keegan for a few minutes, I swear that dog would retrieve for hours if you had the stamina to keep up with him. Can't wait for a new puppy to give him a "run for his money". Us old farts just don't do enough for him.

For the last couple of nights, I started taking an aspirin, just a plain old aspirin before going to bed. I am supposed to take one every day anyway, according to my DR. It seems to help. And it doesn't have any acedominiphin ( sp) or all that stuff that they are now saying will kill your liver. Hopefully it will keep working.

Garance, I think below zero, they would probably say, let them out to do their business and bring them right back in!

Valerie, I saw a cat outside at 3:30 am the other night, running across the street to our house, right up on our porch. it was probably under 10 degrees. Why do people have cats out all night, especially in this weather? I don't understand that at all. I also think they should be licensed, same as dogs. I am probably in the minority.

Hi to Josie, Joan & Cathy,

Take care,

Getting really busy with work. Found another form - office in home- that you can't file yet. Another happy client:confused: and I don't know what other forms can't be filed.

In MO you do have to license cats.

Licensing cats is, I think, a local issue. No requirements here. I'm not even sure about dogs. we live in a different county than when we had our dog. a lot of times a city will have license requirements but the county won't. here, it's that way .

Our little guy is microchipped, tag for rabies & another tag with our name and phone number. the chip would identify us if he ended up at a vet without us. why people leave cats out all night? I'd never do that... much shorter lifespan. lots of people don't think of them like they do dogs. we've had several cats, one at a time, and they got to go out during daylight hours but are "in" at night. we've always had 5 acres, area to roam without getting into the neighbors yard. all of ours have stayed close. unaltered cats tend to roam , get into fights, reproduce wildly, screech in the middle of the night etc. I'd skip licensing but require them to be spayed/neutered. there are a lot more irresponsible cat owners than dog owners though plenty of both to go around. some cats don't do what you want them to do, too independent. either I'm a good cat-mother or I've been lucky to get agreeable cats. we don't have many coyotes here. a healthy coyote population will feast on small cats and dogs.

aspirin.. are you taking a baby coated aspirin? 81 mg? I take one a day in the morning. I definitely get more bruising with it, although less noticeable than when I first started using it. I don't get stomach upset which a lot of people get, along with easier bleeding. not everyone does but it's a common side effect and used often on purpose for that purpose. I tell you, there is no drug that doesn't cause something, or is suitable for everyone.

yesterday was a tough yoga class. my teacher is really good and makes us work very hard! later I did 15 on the bike and 30 on the treadmill. today I think we'll be cycling.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.).

Gosh, I hope we don't get hit with this storm heading up the coast. I'm crossing my fingers that it will stay south and east of us.

This afternoon it's Christopher Nolan and Wes Anderson. Two more presentations tomorrow and then Winter Study is over.

Deb, I know what you mean about throwing and fetching. Max could play with his frisbee endlessly. He has started watching hawks and crows and even a helicopter. DH praises him endlessly because he will be getting chicks again in April, and when they begin to range, Max will have his work cut out for him. He did a great job last year.

Joan, sorry you are having such bad luck with the IRS. No one likes their work to be complicated by bureaucratic inefficiencies. DH has several rants on this subject.

Hi to Valerie and Josie! And Cathy, too.

Did a bike ride this morning, 30 miles around 2.5 hours. still getting sore butts after the long layoff. it was 60 degrees, sunny and the birds were singing. felt like spring. there are many times I love it here. my hellebores are starting to bloom, as is the witch hazel and the sarcococca. tree buds are swelling up. lovely! but... it will rain again soon.

Good morning!

STS TB Upper body pre-mix done. Now for some coffee ( half decafe). The sleeping has improved, maybe a combination of the aspirin and really cutting down on the caffine. We also are being more diligent about turning on the humidifier in the bedroom at night so that could be helping DH's snoring, which of course helps my sleeping.

Joan, Yep, the IRS can be trying, just like all the other gov't agencies. I work with a bunch of them, FDA being the worst one.

Valerie, I agree on the neutering/spaying too, both dogs and cats, unless you are a breeder. Way too many unwanted ones around. I take a regular aspirin. DR said because of a blood condition ( Factor 5), it would not hurt me. I also have to have a blood thinner in the IV ( Heperin?), when I have surgery. It is hereditary, my brother and one of his daughters has it too. 60 degrees? don't rub it in LOL

Garance, that Max is a little doll, what a treasure, My new avatar is Keegan running back through the snow with his ball...it almost looks like he is on a beach..

Hi to Josie,& Cathy,

take care,

Still somewhat sunny today and not cold. while we were sitting in the hot tub last night we were noticing all the signs of spring. daffodils are up a couple inches already. star magnolias buds are swelling up. march is when things usually start blooming here but some years it's earlier. we grow a cover crop in our vegie garden, and it's bright green and 6 inches long, rye grass and a pea type plant called vetch. looks like a lush golf course from a distance.

DH had to go to the dentist, then working this afternoon, and then a meeting until 8:30 so he's in a stormy, nasty mood. not my fault but he acts like it is. glad he's gone for a few hours... I need a break.

I plan on disk 33, whichever one I skipped. I might do both last disks, one is legs. I really enjoyed STS this time and feel like I followed it more closely, and finished in 3 months. Now I can take a closer look at the new workouts. I'm also considering doing the 1 RM testing. it would be easier if workout manager calculated &printed weights.

Deb, aspirin doesn't "hurt" most people and a lot of medical professionals recommend taking a baby coated aspirin daily as preventive measure. I don't remember all the things but it's supposed to be a protective factor against colon cancer for one. I'll need to look up factor 5, I don't remember what that one was for anymore, and my background is pretty outdated.
Love the avatar! my aunt and cousin always had wire haired terriers. such cute little guys. my neighbor across the street has one too but she doesn't let him out much. they look like hard dogs to train. they act like they've had too much caffeine too!

I hope cutting caffeine helps sleep. It's definitely worth a try. you can always boost it back up if it makes no difference. too funny about the humidifier... humidity is generally high here, I can't imagine needing to ADD moisture! but whatever works.
