Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/20

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, and Lori--

This morning I did Burn Sets Bis and Tris (37:15).

Deb, flu shots vary in effectiveness. This year the shot is 62 % effective and therefore not a guarantee against getting the flu. This year is a rather nasty strain I have heard. But it sounds like you think you got the flu from the shot--a common myth. You should always get a flu shot unless you have an allergy to eggs or you are already sick. I looked at my family tree and was shocked by how many of my aunts and uncles and one grandmother died in the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic. That flu was a real killer. I agree on appointments--the end of the afternoon is always late.

Josie, I hope your new technique carries you through to retirement. If not, yell "Shut-up!"

Lori, it's 11 degrees here. Nasty! And here I thought it was going to be another non-winter like last year.

Yoga this morning, did burn set, bi's/tris and core yesterday. Really love this one, even the music. I have a new heavy black band. it's a little too hard to complete all the overhead moves but I'm close.
I like the core part especially. Deb... use the 0.8 "slow down" button... to get a better look at the banana rolls... I did all of them this time, no problem. At regular speed lying down, I couldn't to see what they were doing. once I saw, they aren't bad at all.

Yes, my doc is wonderful. he kept saying to call him anytime, absolutely anytime, and I jokingly said, well, give my your personal cell phone number....and HE DID. along with his email. I would never use it unless it was extremely urgent. my husband knows him pretty well too. You get some extra perks being a doctors wife, but if you're a mean or nasty that would get around quickly. I am undemanding, pay attention, do what I'm told, and write thank you letters when appropriate. docs get so many people who are the belligerent, obstinate and don't do what they're told.
My best advice on appt times is the last one before lunch, or the first one after lunch. there's incentive for offices to be "on time" for both. I 've had good luck with those times.

Lynda, I was in PT in 2 weeks also, but.... the graft is not fully healed in yet. being people, we can restrict activities, and not do moves that over-stress the graft. I wore a brace when hiking and skiing to make sure a slip, or accidental move wouldn't shred it. Doggies... ??? I don't know how long it takes for them to heal enough to make the graft stable.

We're going to yellowstone, driving. too hard to drag all the "gear" on a plane, and it's only a 1 day drive. we will xc ski, snowshoe, maybe hike..depends on how much snow. we take a telescope and do a lot of critter watching. we've been there in winter before. it's less busy than summer but not as quiet as you might think. Easier to see animals close up. they don't run off as quickly. also important not to approach too closely, forcing them to move when they need to conserve energy. If you sit quietly, they often move in by themselves. I've seen bighorns close enough to reach out and touch.

Josie, you need a football helmet like they gave Hillary! or some other big obvious head gear to keep them from talking to you.
Another vote here for flu shots. I can't remember the last time I had the flu. the first flu shot I got way-back-when I got sick from. maybe 1975? didn't do the shots for a few years but now I get one annually. DH does too, since he's exposed constantly at work. I'm especially careful about public surfaces and go through a lot of hand sanitizer after shopping and try not to touch my face with contaminated hands. this years strain seems to be worse than usual.most places still have vaccine available.

we also have heated seats on the subaru. I've gotten more attached to them this year. they warm up much faster than the interior air does. I know I like them a lot more when it's cold as it will be in Yellowstone, plus we will park outside. at home we're back to our usual 40 degres and raining where they aren't as pleasant as when it's zero.

I also see as many of the oscar/ GG nominees as I can. I'm not a fan of Tartantino but DH likes his stuff. I could NOT get through the Kill Bill series as much as I like Uma Thurman. Not many nominated are going to be available on disk for rental. some years are better than others.

Good Morning....

Yay it's Finally Friday!!

So glad there is one more day and then time off....so tired of working. I think I have mentioned that a couple of times before.

No workout today, the dogs had me up at 2:30...ugh...that messed up my rotation for this week..oh well, will start again on Sunday. I think I will do this one over anyway, so that is ok. Very cold here still, but I can't get the temp, The Weather Channel on line is all over the board...One part shows 4 degrees, one shows 41???? what's up with that? I will wait for the radio weather.

Lori, I have puzzle mats, but took them out when we got the Low Impact Series cause they didn't work well with the disks. Now I have cement floor covered with that industrial tile stuff that you see in basements. I really liked it when I had it down. Let me know how they are with the disks for you.

Josie, LOL about your "tuning out" mechanism. Maybe you should stick your fingers in your ears and say, " La La La La "...do you think she would get the message?

Garance, I know that thinking I got the flu from the shot is thought to be a myth, but back then, maybe not. I don't think I have ever been that sick since. So myth or not, I connected it with that. Valerie had it happen in the 70's as well...or at least, like me, she connects it to that. maybe the shots were differnt back then.

Valerie, when do you leave for your vacation?

Anyone have exciting plans for the weekend?

Deb, I don't know if I got the flu from the shot... that was back in the very early days of flu shots. I was working at a hospital. it's just as likely I was exposed to the flu somewhere, and it was just a coincidence that I got sick shortly after getting the shot. the hospital required all employees be immunized so no choice anyway. I think vaccines have improved immensekly in how they specifically target the fu strain that predominates each year. I've gotten flu shots for years now, and neither DH nor I have been sick in a long time. Anyone working in health care gets frequent exposure to everything, and that puts the people at home at risk too.

I tend not to get upper respiratory stuff that is called the "flu" these days anyway. I get bad head colds but usually stops in the throat area. I used to get the dizzy/ nausea/vomiting kind of flu, very unpleasant. it used to be an effective weight loss tool. As you get older your immune system doesn't function as well as when you're younger so I'll take any assistance I can get. I recommend you get immunized, since your DH is exposed a lot and could bring it home for you to share. Does he get immunized?

Lynda that is fascinating you have records that go back that far. No one kept records in our family, so I have no idea.

we have concrete floors with "wood look" laminate over. we had industrial carpeting before that we tore out because it got smelly quickly. I like the smooth floor better. Still , would like to hear how the puzzle mats work.

I only did my yoga yesterday. I got up into a balance position I never managed before , the one where you get your knees on your elbows and take your toes off the ground while leaning forward. look like a frog, I forget what it's called. can't believe I did it. thank you Cathe for the upper body strength that I'm gaining. had a bunch of shopping to do, got home too late to work out any more.

we'll be gone a week.... leave sunday morning early.

Hi Ladies,

I’m so happy it’s Friday. Today I did my cardio power and resistance DVD. I was a bit tired today, so I may take tomorrow off and do tomorrow’s workout on Sunday. I will see how I feel in the morning.

We are going to San Diego for our DS’s graduation from the dental assistant program.
He got his certificate and he ended up with a 4.0 GPA. I’m so proud of him!

Valerie, I can not do that pose yet. I’m afraid to fall on my head and since I have fallen on my heard many times ;) I’m a bit paranoid.

Deb, my co-worker never gets it. She is clueless and keeps talking non stop.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, and Lori--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit premix 1 (49:22). Three weeks done on the Undulating 90 day rotation. I have pretty much done the same workouts except for Legs, but I have a feeling Tabatacize will not be for me because of impact and that comes into the picture on Week 5. I will take a look and see if I can alter it. If not, I will probably substitute something from LIS.

Deb, I will try to see another Oscar nominated film this weekend--maybe Les Miserables--and then on Sunday, it's another Comfort Sunday dinner with a Mexican theme. Still cold here too, but not as crazy because the wind has died down. The reason why you cannot get the flu from the shot is that it is a dead virus. The shot for shingles, on the other hand, is a live virus, which is why you must be careful around people who have never had the chicken pox because you might give it to them.

Valerie, the ACL surgery on dogs is very different. They use some kind of netting in one of the possible procedures to tighten up the joint so it doesn't slip. The other procedure is more complicated and involves drilling holes. I bet Yellowstone is beautiful this time of the year. I've only been there once, in August, but would love to go again. I am trying to imagine that yoga pose--sounds a bit comical.

Josie, I like Deb's idea of just droning something. Maybe "Om" would be good.

I loved Get Smart!!! It was so dry but funny. Some of the old shows were just great. Joesie you are pretty funny with your coworkers. I have a few i would love to tune ou
t too. I am going to try your approach! Congrats on your son's graduation. You should be a proud mom!

Valerie - have a great vacation. I went to yellowstone back in 1984. Seems like a lifetime ago. Had a great time. it is so beautiful out there.

I will let you know on the puzzle matts. I do not plan on convering my entire floor. I am only coovering a section which I will use when doing Hi Impact moves. This way I will still have an area for my slide and glides. They came in today so I am excited to try them out.

This morning I ran 3 miles and will do Burn set Bis and Tris this evening. My husband is working late so I have plenty of time to kill until he is home. Yeah one more day then three weeks of the 90 day Rotation done! You are correct about week five Garance...going to get really tough.

Have a great afternoon ladies!!!!

Good morning and Happy Weekend!

We went for breakfast this morning, it was great. Cold though, even in the restaurant, which opens at 7:00 am and had not had a chance to heat up. I kept my jacket on the whole time. It's 12 degrees here now, at least we are seeing double digits.

Valerie, have a great trip!

Garance, Kelsey had the surgery where they put the net in. The vet said it was like she had the "knee" of a 2 year old when it was done. Tabatacise has a really big dread factor for me...have not looked at it yet, except for the clips on here.

Josie, loved Get Smart too....maybe you should give your co-worker a cone hat and tell her it's a Cone of Silence...she may steer clear of you after that, and that would be a good thing!..LOL

Lori, you have me thinking now....I think I will put the puzzle mats down, with a rug I have that used to be down there over it, so that there is cushion, and the disks will work too, (without the covers of course)..

Agility class this morning, then HouseMax and making dog treats. Exciting life, I know :).

Stay warm!

For ACL repair in people they can use cadaver tissue ( NO!) or tissue from your own knee. they used part of my patellar tendon but even for people there are variations. choices. mine is screwed to the bone but it's not enough to set off any metal detectors. Hope you can decide what's best for Max.
the yoga pose is crane pose. Bakasana. yes, it looks ridiculous! Josie, I was able to do it by getting my butt very high in the air and slowly lowering it as I gradually went forward with my face looking forward. I fell on my head the first couple times because I tend to drop my head too low.

Lynda have you seen Zero Dark Thirty yet? anyone else? I might want to see that in a theater. some movies are better on the big screen.

I did Supercuts... the whole thing. Memorable. I had done a premix but not the entire thing. the sit up/pushup sequence is frantic. I did them all but not quite as fast. the real killer in there for me is the kick throughs....think that's what they're called. I bascially fall on my butt rapidly, side to side.

I never saw Get Smart.. I have big gaps where I didn't watch any TV at all.

yellowstone is great any time of year. we go there for the animals. like the thermal features but don't spend a lot of time on them. there are lots of lovely mountain places in the west but you need to go to a national park to reliably see a lot of critters. national forest & wilderness areas have a population but because of hunting you don't see things as easily, and then they're in the distance running away. parks you can see relatively natural behavior. It is so exciting to see a mother bear playing with her cubs, or otters in a river. It's a fairly intact ecosystem. wolves are fascinating. one early morning several years ago we were heading for a trailhead and saw a group of wolves chase down and kill an elk. we were close. did not need binoculars, much less a scope. we sat on a ridge and had a herd of bighorns gradually move in closer until they were all around us, just grazing. we sat quietly and watched. probably some risk there... but since they approached us slowly we stayed put. had a huge bighorn come down a trail and walk right behind me ... like 5 feet.... when I was getting gear from the back of the car. I turned around and he was right THERE. didn't see or hear him so I froze. walked on past, crossed the road, and headed up the slope. we've had some wonderful experiences there. we go every year.

Good evening ladies!

Loved the puzzle matts! I had bought 4 packs and thankful that I did as I ended using all but 1 square. Today I did all out low impact hiit and was able to place my step on it and still had plenty of area to do the off step low impact. I did the disc portion off to the side on the wood flooring. Using the matts made it so much easier on my joints. I can't wait to try hi impact on them. I did put a little double sided tape on the corners to hold the entire matt in place. I was afraid it would slip if I did not do this.

Have a great night!!!!!
