Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/17

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Bum Bum (30 min.), followed by High and Tight (37 min.). Barely made it to the end of High and Tight. I think I am going to be sore tomorrow.

Deb, I did see your e-mail, but I don't think I want yet another jar of the stuff. I sent you a check, but I think I owe you 40 cents because I misread the .90 as .50. Next time you buy some for me, remind me of the 40 cents.

Cathy, I cannot help you because I never used the workout manager. I hate technology.

Off to see Avatar and out to dinner after this epic film. Or at least epic-length film.

Hi Ladies,

My workout went well last night. I'm a bit sore from the spinning class; I guess I added to much resistance. Today I will be working out with Kevin plus 30 minutes of cardio.

Deb, I know what you mean about sleeping in. I told my dd that we would start working out at 5:15 AM on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, but I has not happened yet. It is just do dark outside!

Garance, do you use the Murad all over your face? Did you like Avatar? My dd loved it.

Joan, why were you up so late?

Valerie, It is amazing how much there is to learn about bikes and biking. I'm a bit overwhelmed.

Hi Cathy, I know what you mean about being tired after the kids have been there for 5 days. I hope that you got some rest.

Josie

Every gastro doc has a favorite preparation... His wanted "no fiber/low residue" diet 2 days before, all clear liquid diet the day before, and only water on "C-Day". Most of the people around here use Miralax... an OTC laxative, not bad mixed in gatorade. (Go-Lytly used to be used, the gallon of foul liquid) DH gets hungry/weak on the clear liquid day. Clear broth, black coffee, apple juice, tea, green/yellow jello, popsicles. nothing with red/blue/orange/purple colors. so the only thing you can "eat" is jello, and by about noon of the clear liquid day jello is not looking pretty. I make two big packages so he had two flavors to pick from.

I had mine 4 years ago. my doc wanted a low fiber diet starting 3 days ahead, then the clear liquid day. I was miserable. I eat vegies, fruit, whole grains and not much else so the no fiber bound me up. I was up the entire night before the procedure in the bathroom. I took a blanket in there and "slept" on the floor in front of the toilet. we will have a 'consult" before I sign up for THAT again.
For most people like DH the procedure itself is easy.... he watched much of it on camera. Mine was horrendous. I needed a huge amount of the anesthetic and was a basket case for 12 hours after. I got motion sick on the way home and vomited the juice they'd given me afterwards. so I had to clean my car besides! Besides all that, my prep was not that good so I'm dreading she may want Go-lytely next time.

Cathy, I'm no help either, use workout manager to print work sheets for STS. I write in stuff done on a paper calendar. I'm never had reflux but that sounds awful!

garance, not to go all political here, but we were so disappointed with the massachusetts vote. We were so hoping something would get done with healthcare and it's looking less likely by the minute. Not perfect, but a start. So many people going with no care at all because they can't afford it.
Want to hear your review of Avatar. I told DH we should see it in a theater after the buzz winds down , but before the oscars. I hate crowded theaters.
If the instructor annoys me I won't do the workout. so I'm careful what I buy.

weather is so lovely here, spring-like, 62 degrees. daffodils coming up, witch hazel, and hellebores blooming. we did a 30 mile bike ride yesterday. the same ride I did last fall and developed the shoulder DVT. I lowered my bike seat a little so I'm not leaning so hard on my shoulder. that unfortunately puts more pressure on my butt. so today my shoulder is happy but my butt/crotch is sore. a good 30 mile ride though. first ride is always slow compared to after doing it a few times. so nice sitting in the sun. I changed my plans and should do disk #9 today and then on to #10.

hey ya'll, sorry , i didn't clarify very well. i know how to use the w/out manager, but i wish it had more precise ways to log the workouts that are not cathe. like when you do an AWT like the firm. i just log it under cardio, but it is actually more than just cardio. anyway, sorry confused every one. i'm kinda weird. i want it to be exactly what i've done.:) and the cross-train thing has never worked for me. that is what i would probably log them under if it would work.

like today i did dynamic strenght & power from tracie's old TLP series. it is mostly cardio, but it has some wts. uses a med ball for the cardio, lots of core, balance and that stuff. it just seems there is not a proper catagory for those kind of workouts.

i was surprised that dynamic strength & power was not as hard as i thought it was. i really like it alot. i may do it again tomorrow. i did half of it and then my dil and g/kids came in to surprise me for my b/day. they brought me balloons and tulips and took me to lunch. isn't that toooo sweet???? so, anyway, after they left, i did the rest of the workout, actually did some of the sections twice. so, it actually was probably 60m, rather than 45.

well, ya know, garance, it is pretty awful. i woulda never thought reflux could hurt so bad. i went in for my check-up yesterday (from the endoscopy) and i told the NP about the attack monday and she said that is why people go to the ER. the pain is so bad they think they are having a heart attack. boy, i tell ya, i could barely drive home from work.
it is extremely painful.

Happy Birthday Cathy.

Josie, I'm up late working because that is my normal business hours during tax season. In January I have year ends to close for business and their w-2's. That was what I was working on last night. Otherwise starting next week. I see clients from 9am until 8pm Mon, Tues and Wed. and Sat from 10am until 2 pm. I work until 1-2am 7 days a week to get it all done. I eat lunch at my desk, take time off for dinner(we go out on Friday night)

I did disc 6 and 7. I must admit to skipping all the pushups in disc 7.

TGIF

Good Morning!

Finally, Friday, what a long week. Anyone have any exciting weekend plans? Not much here, the usualy HOuseMax, and we have a play to go to tomorrow afternoon. Keegan's agility class, not much else.

I will try to start my workouts again on Sunday, get back into the swing of things.

Garance, don't worry about the 40 cents. NBD. I did get another one for myself. I could not pass it up at that price and I know I will always use it. Let us know how you like the film.

Josie, will you be walking funny today? LOL...How is the rain in your area? The SF San Jose area is getting hit pretty hard. Around where my MIL used to live is really bad according to the news.

Valerei, I have had polyps removed multiple times, which for a while I had to have a CS every 3 years. Now I am at the 5 year level. Send some of that spring weather here....You are lucky you are not getting what they are getting in California.

Cathy, Happy Birthday! How nice that they took you to lunch. I can't believe you came home from lunch and did the second half of the workout!

Joan, I can't imagine working as late as you do. We will let you take a pass on those pushups.

Take care...

Happy Friday Ladies,

No workout for me today. We have had tornados, hale, thunder storms and non stop rain.
It is suppose to stop by the weekend. I hope so, but the good thing about it is that we needed all this rain.

Happy Birthday Cathy! Are you celebrating this weekend?

Deb, I'm not sore at all this morning, I was surprised. I guess I worked out all the lactic acid in last night’s workout.

Joan, that is a tough schedules no wonder you work out at crazy times.

Garance, are you having a Manhattan this evening? I am.

Valerie, my doctor is going to get mad at me for not having my colonoscopy yet. I will have to do it soon.

Have a great weekend!

Josie

Deb, my sympathy on the every 3 years! Every 10 years is what I'm hoping for next time. they didn't find anything on mine, but my prep was not as good as they like. I have a 'tortuous" colon which is apparently hard to examine.

Never did get in a workout yesterday so I called it my rest day and will get back on it today. disk 9 is calling me.

Joan, that is an awful schedule. How long does tax season last? permission to skip pushups granted.

wow, cathy, finishing a workout after a birthday lunch is impressive. I always feel too full after those kind of lunches to do any more work.

Sorry you're getting the weather we usually get. My neighbor is in AZ right now for the winter and is not too happy the last few days. El nino patterns are apparently pretty predictable. Last winter we had awful weather, this year is fairly benign. downright spring-like. my hellebores, sarcococca, witch hazel are blooming.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Petra Kolber's Bootcamp Boogie (62 min.). I really cannot recommend this one too highly for cardio. It is a darn near perfect workout for me, and very easy to learn.

I also recommend Avatar EXTREMELY HIGHLY!!!!! The 3-D is really extraordinary. We felt like we could reach out and touch things at times or that the actors were right there in the same space. It's a long film, but we all agreed (four of us) that the time flew by. I also found Pandora beautiful and full of surprises and mysteries. The ecological message is very pure and high-minded I suppose, but I don't mind a bit of didacticism mixed with all of the adventure and action and the often stunning beauty. If you know Cameron from Terminator and/or Aliens, then you know how he constructs his endings--i.e., they just keep shifting gears from lows to highs to lows and a final very satisfying climax. The portrayal of the military was very disturbing, but also typical of Cameron if you remember the marines in Aliens. There is even a Latina like Chavez in Aliens who is a marine who decides that she cannot just slaughter this other civilization and switches sides.

Josie, I had my Manhattan last night. Yum! We went out to dinner after the film. Sorry about all that rain. Better start building an ark! Essential-C goes under my makeup every day. It really is a silky cream and keeps my skin splotch-free. And best of all, Deb is my middleman with great deals (Thanks, Deb!!!)

Deb, housemax for me tomorrow. It's a football weekend for DH, but now I have my 46 inch screen downstairs and I will watch some other stuff I have DVR'd. I want to see Capricca tonight--a prequel to Battlestar Galactica, which I am now hooked on.

Valerie, that sounds like the colonoscopy from hell. I have never had to do more than 24 hours of all clear liquid and was never told to cut fiber. This was my third colonoscopy. I started after my mom had colon cancer. I have never had a precancerous polyp, just some benign polyps, so I go every five years. It's every three if they turn up any cancerous polyps--or at least this is my gastroenterologist's regimen. I have found the discussion of health care absolutely mind-boggling. It seems so clear to me that the insurance industry has found ways to weasel out of covering people and that the rates have been going up at such an alarming rate that you would have to be nuts NOT to do something to rectify the situation. I do have several friends, though, who feel this particular bill is such a mess and does not go far enough that maybe only parts of it can be salvaged. I just think Scott Brown is creepy--period. Not a statesman, but an opportunist who had the audacity to run ads with footage of JFK encouraging tax cuts.

Cathy, aren't there some drugs to control the acid reflux now?? It must be very painful.

Joan, I will no longer whine about my work schedule after reading what you do. I am a wuss by comparison and feel deprived if I don't have time for my hobbies.

Have a great weekend ladies!

Saturday

Good Morning,

Well besides HouseMax, I have Keegan's agility class which I am trying to talk myself into doing, lunch with my cousin and the play this afternoon.

Josie, Hope your weather improves soon.

Valerie, I am so envious about your flowers growing already. We are happy when we can see the sidewalk.

Garance, do you put a moisturizer over the Murad, then use foundation? I think you are using the Simply Ageless too, which has SPF22 I think. I started just putting the Simply Ageless over the Murad, and found it to be very nice and ligjht, but I am worried about wrinkes. I do still put the Olay eye stuff in the crow's feet area.

Hi to Cathy, I hope you are feeling better. I'm with Garance, isn't there a medication that can prevent those attacks of acid reflux?

Take care,

Good morning,

Garance I was disappointed with Mass. election also, but I wasn't happy with the add ons in the bill they needed to get the votes. I'm hoping for a good scaled down plan. Of couse I am a wishful thinker.

Remember that tax season is only 10 weeks. I get 90% of my income during this period. Most people work 2000 hours in a year with 80 hrs vacation. I can work really hard for a short period of time. The problem the last couple of years is having to babysit the rest of the year and do the rest of the work in the evening.

No wo Friday. It was all housemax.

We've had rain/mist the entire week. I would just like the sun to come out.

Joan
