Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/15

Deb Hope you can find help for sleep issues. I have been having trouble falling asleep at bedtime. Yesterday I closed my eyes and fell asleep at 4:30 and slept until 5:30 when a client called. Was tired all evening but when I tried to sleep at 10pm I couldn't fall asleep. Even if I don't get a nap in during the day I can sleep anytime but bedtime.

I'm running away from home. We planned a last minute trip to New Orleans last week. I leave at noon and will be back Sunday. Unfortunately dh thought the trip was next week and FDA came in Tuesday. He can't leave until they do. I'm going without him. He will get there when he can.

Hi Deb, Josie,Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did the upper body split on Total Body Trisets (56 min.). This one works in the old dvd player. I did go buy another dvd player today, but not the one DH wants, because they don't have it at Walmart, and Best Buy is 25 miles away. The clerk at Walmart told me they no longer make the one I was looking for, but who knows if she's right.

Sounds like fun, Joan, although I would probably stuff myself on all that great food in the Big Easy.

Deb, I hope you get some sleep, soon. Is the benadryl working for you, or has it lost its effectiveness? I agree about cruising--what a disaster unfolded there! I have always been chary of cruising, because of seasickness. I'm not too good in boats.

Haven't seen GWTW in ages. I was really excited when it was re-released to theaters back in the 60s, so I persuaded a friend to go with me, and she sort of spoiled the film for me, because she thought Clark Gable looked like a "greasy pimp." She was clearly not enamored of him. I guess I have also been "educated" on the racial stereotyping and probably would no longer feel comfortable watching the film.

Sounds like you are having fun, Josie! Love salsa dancing.

Another vote against cruising!. I get motion sick very easily and there have been too many problems with food poisoning and other illnesses. mostly I would not want to be trapped in a tiny cabin surrounded by hundreds of people. I like to get away from people for vacation, not get immersed in a floating city. I hope the ship captain gets hung by the heels for running out like he did.

I'm well aware of racial stereotypes but GWTW didn't bother me. Most old movies push many buttons because of massive social changes that have happened since they were made. acting was WAY less "subtle" than it is now, and by today's standards, very stag-y, everyone sounds pretty ridiculous.... Scarlett's flirtation routines, the "southern boys", and so on. I'm generally not a big fan of old movies but this one held up well. I picked up the DVD for $6.99 at costco. I even liked Clark Gable... . he did have kind of greasy looking hair but all the men had funny looking hair. DH had never seen it and enjoyed it. I can watch a movie and enjoy it while not thinking for a second that we should return to those times.

Deb, I've tried Ambien but I get headaches after I use it. I've tried some others and either they didn't work at all, or I got headaches. What about a small glass of wine in the evening? some people swear by a glass of milk.

Good morning,

I cannot wait until this day/week is over. I need some sleep and it's not happening for some reason,

Garance, the Benadryl is no longer working, or if it does, it only lasts 3-4 hours, then I am awake for the rest of the night. I went on one cruise ( Mexico) about 25 years ago, and never would go on another. Too confining, all I did was eat. I think I gained 5 pounds in 4 days.

Valerie, one of my co-workers lives in Seattle. He is on the road, ( I think in El Paso) and is hearing from his wife that they have no power, tree limbs down in their driveway etc. He is helpless where he is, and so frustrated. I sure hope the airport is open when he tries to fly home.

Joan, sounds like you have just had enough and need to get away. Good for you! Pretty soon you will be buried under tax forms again.

Off for more coffee, anyone have any exciting plans for the weekend? I have Keegan's agility class and we have a play to go to tomorrow, ( "Black Tie") but that's it.

Take care,

Deb, yesterday was worst for the airport because of the ice storm. It was totally closed but later 2 ( of 3) runways were open. today should be pretty normal tho there will be a big backlog getting here because of all the cancelled flights, and most flights being so full to begin with.
we did not as far as I know, get the ice storm. we are in a tiny area north of seattle where it has stayed cold and continued to snow, so we got another 4-5 inches yesterday. DH & I re-scraped & shoveled twice. it was easy compared to the day before. seeing what so many people went thru ... and continue to. I'm not complaining. Today the guaranteed warm up is coming, the one promised for more than 24 hours ago. it will be in the mid 40's today. this morning may still be dicey. schools are closed. it will take a LONG time to get all the power back on. broken trees are hanging on the lines and crews need to clean everything up before it's safe to fix the lines themselves.
I think DH will be working today. If we don't hear "no" by 6:30 then he will be and it will probably be a long day. he is taking my car again so not sure if I can get out today. haven't been anywhere since monday. wow, I'm tired of this.

I did 35 on the treadmill yesterday, and the AB portion of Tubo Barre. shoveling covered upper body.

this may not apply to you at all... I have no problem falling asleep. it's after I wake up around midnight to pee that I have issues going back to sleep. If I take a Benadryl, that's when I take it. sometimes I take an Advil. sometimes nothing. I wish I had some other ideas for you. Ambien works for a while but is easy to get dependent on. you sort of learn to believe you can't sleep without it. I get a massive headache from it so no way.

Happy Friday Ladies,

I finally got a cold and will probably not ride this weekend. I have to see how I feel by tomorrow morning.

Dancing was fun on Wednesday and my hips a little sore, but overall I had a lot of fun.
We needed to shake the dancing cob-webs ;)

Deb, how much coffee do you drink per day? If I drink coffee anytime after 3, I will not be able to sleep. I used to be able to have a cup before bed and nothing would bother me, but in the last 3-4 years, it just keeps me awake.

Valerie, my new boss is from Seattle and goes home every weekend. He will probably have to stay in LA this weekend.

Joan, have a great trip and I hope that can relax and re-energize yourself.

Hi to Cathy and Garance!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

Finished off the week with LIC (50 min.), because I knew it would work in the old dvd player. DH will put the new one in this weekend.

Deb, I have probably mentioned this before, but when I was going through my hot flashes and would wake up and not go back to sleep, my doctor prescribed trazodone. It really worked for me and it's non-addictive--and also inexpensive. I think it's more like a tranquilizer, and might help you with a "racing" mind, which I also sometimes have when I'm teaching.

Valerie, I actually like old films--even silent ones like Way Down East with Lilian Gish. I'm looking forward to seeing The Artist, a silent film that's been getting lots of awards this year.

I will probably see Hugo this weekend while DH watches the Patriots-Ravens game, and bring home a pizza for us. That's all my excitement this weekend.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Deb, Linda made a good suggestion. I tried Trazodone many years ago for the same reasons. It helped a little but caused constipation. I'm prone to that problem, it's not a "major" side effect but that killed it for me. I tried melatonin too, and didn't notice any difference. but that does NOT mean it's not worth trying.
Sometimes you can get into a pattern where you expect you won't be able to sleep, and sure enough, you can't sleep! Could you try sleeping in another room or on the sofa for a while to break the pattern? we don't sleep as deeply when we get older and DH is bothered by me thrashing around. I turn over a lot and it wakes him up. It's better for both of us if I sleep by myself some nights.

Did LBB yesterday. could have done something longer but I am so tired of being cooped up I was not in the mood.

the storm that began here has moved east. good luck with it!. we now are warm and raining a lot so are probably moving into urban flood mode when all the drains get blocked with snow and ice dams. sometimes I get pretty sick of winter.
