Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/12

Good morning,

Dog club meeting last night was not as late as usual. Actually finished in record time. I still took today as a rest day.

Garance, 20 # for biceps is amazing. I think I highest I ever did was 12. Now I am happy to get all the reps done with 8's. Yes, Dogs in the City was the name. That was a great show.

Valerie, very envious of you right now...the high today here will be 26. Nothing sprouting, no buds or anything, but more snow on the way...yippee. :)

Judy, I watched one clip that they had of the Pit Bull program on Animal Planet site..it was pretty good. They don't have season 1 on Amazon though...do you have to watch them in order or can I just jump into season 4?

Josie, great job on the ride!

Lori, didn't get your e-mail address yet, to send the workout sheet.

Nothing else going on here, work, then home to relax.

Take care,

Deb-I don't think you have to watch the seasons in order to enjoy the show. The first 3 seasons they were in California and then they moved the rescue to New Orleans in season 4.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit +core 1 (49:22).

I have an episode of Pitbulls and Parolees recorded but haven't watched it yet. Too bad they don't have the earlier seasons on Amazon Prime.

I watched the Oscar nominations this morning. I'm somewhat surprised that Robert Redford and/or Tom Hanks didn't get nominated. I guess Bruce Dern took the slot delegated for older stars. I wonder if Cate Blanchett and Leonardo DiCaprio will repeat their Golden Globe wins.

Deb, did you manage to get some bragging time in for Kylee? I can do 15s on biceps curls pretty easily, so I foolishly decided to go up in weight. I think I could do it on the Burn Sets bis, which are only 10 reps, but no way I could do 16.

Valerie, what are Lenten roses? Are they the same as Hellebore niger, also known as Christmas rose?

Josie, how do you respond to killer trainers? I have never wanted to buy a Jillian Michaels dvd because she has a reputation for being so harsh. I would probably get angry.

Hi to Judy and Lori!

Lenten roses= hellebores. they are available in dozens of different colors and types since they grow so well here. some the flowers face up, others down. the buds on mine are almost ready to open. so pretty and zero care except for cutting off the old foliage just before they bloom.

I checked at Rite aid this morning and no Entertainment Weekly. I asked the guy there, and he wasn't familiar with it so I 'll assume it's not published or distributed out here. Deb, haven't got the one you sent me yet. (ETA just got the mail, got it. Thanks Deb. will read shortly.)

I didn't hear the Oscar nominations but that is surprising about Redford and Hanks. I thought they were both nominees for sure.... just from what I've read... as I won't see for myself for a while. we watched Behind the Candelabra last night. It was distressing to see Michael Douglas and matt damon in their roles. it was not that good a movie at all. I would skip this one. I am pretty sure Douglas got a GG for his part n but... meh.

we are pretty balmy and have been, but the ski season is pathetic. ski areas look like stump ranches with only higher areas having enough snow. DH and usually go xc skiing somewhere but this year it's not likely. we're going to CA instead. xc skiing is fun but good snow is a requirement so maybe we'll do a shorter trip close to home later in the year if conditions improve. not worth a big long drive and expensive accomodations if conditions are marginal.

I did yoga this morning, and cardio supersets ( or is it trisets??) from LIS last night. I always like that one since there's enough ab work to make an additional ab workout un needed.

.

Hi Ladies, I did a body pump class at 6:45 AM. This class reminds me is muscle max, my muscles are still shaking ;)

Garance, I just do my best when I have a killer trainer :). It was the same instructor this morning.

Hi to the rest of the ladies!

I will be back later.

Josie

Good afternoon ladies!

This morning I was not in the mood for a tough workout so I decided on the upper body weight work out from Turbo Barre followed by the firewalker section. Did the firewalker section twice. With warm up and stretch came to about 35 minutes. Was perfect for my mood.

We put together the inversion table last night. Went pretty quick which was a relief. I believe we are going to love it. We ended up with the Teeter 960. We decided to spend the extra money and get the one with the easier foot clamp. Well worth it. Here is the link to it if you are interested in checking it out. I used it for a few minutes after this mornings workout and felt so relaxed afterwards. Felt like I had a great stretch.

Amazon.com: Teeter Hang Ups EP-960 Inversion Table with Healthy Back DVD: Sports & Outdoors

Deb...I agree with everyone. BRAG!!!! Yeah Kylee!!!

Josie..I had sent you a PM about the Ruthless chart. Send me your email and I will send it to you.

I was surprised with the nominations too. I still can't believe all the good reviews about Wolf of Wall Street!

Valerie...I had watched Behind the Candelabra when it first came out. I thought they both did a decent job acting but thought it was so sad and upsetting. Funny to be talking about roses. We won't be seeing roses in New England for a while!

Lynda...very impressed with 20#s Very nice. I use 20's too at times but do not make it to 16 either.

Judy..How did you make out at the assisted living near you? If you already posted about it I apologize. Also was thinking of your kitties last night. For no reason they just popped into my mind!

Have a great night ladies!

Deb... your return address stamp is so cute! thank you for sending the article.

Lori, I thought acting was good. but the story wasn't that interesting. I remember Liberace from old TV and Michael douglas did a good job but the character was not especially admirable. I would not sit thru it again. I found out after the fact that his mother was played by Debbie Reynolds??? really? didn't recognize her. I did pick up on Dan akroyd right away.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did 90 minutes of a 2 hour Spinerval before work. This morning I did Muscle Endurance.
I changed my plans about starting STS in January. I came up with a rotation I want to do first. I'm going to do Muscle Endurance 3x a week for 4 weeks, then Gym Styles for 4 weeks and finish with Slow and Heavy for 4
weeks. I'll take an easy week in between each and use indoor cycling 2 or 3 days a week for cardio.

Lynda, there is no way I can do bicep curls with 20 lbs, in fact I only have 1 20lb dumbbell , which I have used for 1 arm rows.

Lori-I talked with someone at the Assisted Living facility and we have an appointment to visit there with FIL next Thursday evening. It will be interesting to see if he will be willing to go visit or if he puts up
a fight. It sounds like a very nice place and so close to us, it would be ideal.

The kittens are doing well. Echo is over 7 months now, and is still very small. She only weighs 6 lbs. She is very petite. If she doesn't start to gain a little more weight I will take her to the vet to make sure everything is ok.
Chino is almost 6 months old and he is huge! His paws are so big! He weighs about 8 lbs now and I am thinking he could end up being 20 lbs by the time he is done growing.
Chino doesn't really look like Tiger, but for some reason both DH and I find ourselves calling Chino "Tiger" or "Tigey", my nickname for Tiger. Echo looks like Misty, but I haven't called her Misty yet. I dreamed about them (Tiger & Misty) the other night but I can't remember what it was about, just that they were there.

Valerie-I would love to have your weather now. It's snowing here and getting colder by the minute.

Josie-Great ride! Your classes sound like fun too!

Hi to Deb!

Judy

Good morning and Happy Friday!!
banana016.gif

Well it's finally Friday, and the weekend is a mere 8 hours away!

Judy, good to hear that you have an appointment with the facility close to you for your FIL. I hope he doesn't put up a fight. Is it abnormal for a kitten to stay that small if she is petite to begin with? does she eat normally?

Garance, yes, I did brag about Kylee...at the end of our club meetings, we have a large dog cookie jar, that you have to put a dollar in as it goes around the room if you want to brag about a success or whatever that your dog did. It's a lot of fun hearing about all the things that people have accomplished with their dogs. Then the money goes into the club's treasury.

Valerie, those flowers sound so pretty, I wish they would live here...

Lori, that table looks amazing! I would definitely try one out if there was one around to try.

Hi to Josie,

Not much here, tomorrow is agility class, and we have a play at our local theater that should be fun.

Anyone have any plans for the weekend?

Deb-Echo seems to have a good appetite and healthy digestion. I know some adult cats are very petite, but it seems like she just stopped growing. I think I will make a vet appointment for her anyway to get her checked out.

Judy, my kitty is only 8 lbs plus couple ounces. He was 1-2 yo when I got him and filled out a little but is just a small kitty. he's a slim build, not skinny and quite healthy. just petite. the shelter first thought he was a female.
I ran into problems looking for a second cat because so many are so HUGE that I thought he'd be intimidated, as he is small to begin with and not an aggressive personality. never realized there are so many absolutely huge cats. at least twice his size. still, not a bad idea to get her checked just to be sure.

I did 30 on the treadmill, my knee pushups ( sets of 40) Core 1, and trying pull ups again. can't actually pull myself up so hang there with bent arms as long as I can. plus yoga in the morning.

we are having second thoughts about planned trip because of fire danger and smoke near where we wanted to go. retirement is nice this way, we can put it a few days if we choose and not stress.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, I'm sure you can grow Christmas roses in your weather. I have one that doesn't bloom until about March. I wanted to try it because Plath wrote about a Christmas rose in the last of her bee poems, "Wintering." I wouldn't describe them as "pretty," though. Or, at least mine is purple and the flower is, well, kind of leathery, and the leaves are thick and rough. My hellebore sometimes blooms through snow.

I was never even tempted to watch the Liberace film because EW gave it a B- and Liberace always struck me as vulgar and smarmy--hated his oily voice and smile.

Finally had someone in this morning to do an insurance appraisal on all my jewelry, silver, and our art. It was kind of fun to watch, but it took several hours and I had to drag everything out and then put it away again. I'm sorely tempted to just sell some of the old gold stuff I've inherited from so many deaths in my family and let it be melted down. Keep the pieces I still wear and everything from DH and whittle the collection down.

Judy, good luck with your FIL. A place close to you would be so much better than 30 miles away.

Josie, you're a better woman than I. I would not like a taskmaster working out.

This weekend looks like football and more football. Go PATS!

I always assumed hellebores grew most places but bloomed at wildly different times. the name Lenten roses came from somewhere. I'm sure not when lent is, but late march/april? there are so many new cultivars, (at least out here) that the range of colors is much greater than used to be. some even self sow so I have new ones popping up everywhere.

Michael Douglas nailed it, he was oily and smarmy. just not a very interesting person as portrayed..., self indulgent, excessive, just plain weird... nothing admirable. I have trouble watching "physical" stuff gay or straight. I don't like to watch intimate behavior ...this wasn't too graphic... on screen, no matter who's involved. ick.

I'd have trouble with a Jillian Michaels type shrieking orders at me ... would not set well.

Good morning and Happy Saturday!

Some snow last night, and it is cold again.

Judy, better to have peace of mind and have the vet check her out.

Valerie, good job on the workout...pull ups are the toughest thing to do... I have those pull up assisting straps, and they are still hard. I think I have a Jillian Michaels DVD that I never looked at, or maybe I sold it on Ebay... not sure why I bought it

Garance, may look into something for this area that blooms early, it would be nice to see something besides tulips and daffodils...

Hi to Lori, and Josie,

Agility class this morning, then we go see the play called "Proof"...

Take care,

Good morning ladies...

This morning is P90x legs and back followed up with one of the KCM shape up workouts.

Deb...I can see why you like this DVD. Doesn't wipe you out yet you feel like you get a great workout. I like kelly's personality too. Your workout sheets are so much more than I expected! Thought I was only getting Flextrain. THANK YOU!

I enjoyed the DA article. The plan today is to catch up on the shows. We'll see how this goes.

Valerie...I can not do a pull-up to save my life! I use bands and this works well for me.

Judy...one of my cats is thin and she is very healthy. She is a big fluff ball so you do not notice until you pick her up.

I do not like Jillian's style at all. I have tried a couple of her dvd's but I just can't click with her.

Lynda....several years back we had a jewelry company that bought gold come into the office. I loved gold in the 80's but now its silver/white gold/platinum. I saved only the pieces I really liked and anything that was my mom's. Everything else I sold and never regretted it.

Hi to Josie!!!

Have a great day!

I've always had issues with metal, but when I got a second hole punched in my ear lobe in the '90's and it activated my sensitivity. I used to be able to wear earrings, necklaces, rings, watches... my skin would turn blackish where there was contact after a few hours, but otherwise OK. after that second hole it got worse & I had to gave up earrings. even when I coat the post and earring back with clear polish, I still get red, itchy, swollen within a couple hours. I wear rings during the day but remove at night, and that's OK. so much for wearing most jewelry. It's probably nickel allergy. I loved earrings but they make me miserable now. the itching and redness last for days afterward so it's a gift that keeps on giving.
I don't mean to suggest I can do a real pull up ( dream on!)... I have one of those giant rubber bands that I put my foot or knee on, then hold in a pull up position and slowly lower myself. probably as close as I'll ever get.
took the day off yesterday. we are having second thoughts about our CA trip. Driving conditions don't look good... dense fog and freezing fog for long distances. may change our destination.
went to see Gravity yesterday. wow. very interesting movie. would be a waste of time to watch at home. the 3D glasses make me sort of motion sick on and off. not much of a story really, but the special effects were stunning. glad we went, we enjoyed it.

One nice thing about hellebores is that, like daffodils, they come back every year with minimal work. tulips usually are good for one season here. if they come back at all, they get smaller and less showy, and soon disappear. lots of commercial bulbs grown here so not sure why they are so short lived.

We have a vet appointment Monday morning at 9:30. Echo lost 0.20 lbs since I weighed her last week. I'm hoping that she is just going to be a little cat, but better to get her checked out now.

Hi Ladies,

I did a spin class and a body pump class today. I was a little worried about doing two classes in a row, but I felt fine. Tomorrow we will be doing a 42 mile ride.

Judy, hope there is nothing wrong with your kitty.

Garance, the instructor that I said was trying to kill us is very nice and knowledgable. The workouts were a killer. He always goes around making sure everyone is doing it right.

Valerie, it has been very hot in LA and the air quality has not been the best because of the fire.
So maybe it's a good idea for you and your DH to change your plans.

Hi to Deb and Lori!
