Rode the trail today for about an hour and a half. at the turn around spot at the bridge over the river, i spotted a seal first of all, a long way from salt water. like 15-20 miles? and also a large flock of common mergansers ( about 30) along the shore. they nest along fresh water rivers and lakes so we must have caught them on the way. this is the same location we see flocks of momma mergansers and their babies later in summer, where the two branches of the river join and head to the sound. we seem to be the only people who even look. dont even need binoculars. i spotted them before i was even off my bike.
