Pentagenarians & Beyond: June 8, 2025

just finished our ride 15 miles on our regular trail. lovely out with lots of birds. we saw the merganser with her babies again. i think there are 14 ducklings but they zoom around so quickly up and down that its hard to be sure they are on the river below the bridge we ride over so we can watch them without disturbing them.
its going to be a warm one today. there are actually "extreme heat warnings' issued. it will be between 80-90 don't stop giggling, that's warm for here so early in the season. the humidity is low as it usually is, so its not unpleasant except it wont cool down much tonight so its our first AC day of the year.

I did my usual yoga/mobility this morning for 18 minutes.

Valerie, nice job with your usual 15 mile ride. Our temperature has been similar yesterday and today and the humidity makes it feel awful. I actually have a headache from the weather today.

Cathy, nice job with Live Metabolic Med Ball and Upper Body balance discs.

Hello to Diane Sue, Judy, and Shannon.

Good morning, ladies. Friday I did RWH Low Impact HiiT, One & Two Combined premix. Saturday I did LMR Functional Mobility Fusion. Sunday I combined some LMR stuff: Lower Body Disc bonus, Anytime Mobility bonus, and Functional Core Fusion. That was an interesting workout. I needed to move, but it was too stinking hot and humid to enjoy a walk outside. Summer has arrived.

Carolyn – Good call on changing your workout Friday when you were feeling low on energy. I really like mobility work. It’s a lot more interesting than yoga. My fellow southerner, I’m sorry the humidity gives you a headache. That’s going to make the summer very long for you. I don’t have any health-related issues, it just puts me in a very foul mood.

Judy – Good work with your Peloton strength and ride on Friday.

Cathy – Eating an avocado with a spoon is absolutely the best way to enjoy one. You know, I had high hopes for the Boss Bands and Loops DVD, but I ended up not liking it at all, especially the loops. Are the live workouts any different? LOL, my sister and I are very different too – sometimes we accuse each other of being adopted. And yeah, I hope the new LMR 2 has more balance work, legs especially. You know I can’t do the stuff on my hands.

Diane - hope your CT scan went well. I’m surprised they would do it on Saturday.

Valerie – I think I may be about ready to end my road walks. I’ve had some interesting run-ins with irate idiots who cuss me out, etc., just because I’m walking on the road. None lately, but traffic isn’t getting any lighter, that’s for sure. I wish we could go back to the days when our road was dirt and nobody lived out here. We used to ride horses all day without any problem. No way would I ride a horse out here now. That would be a disaster in the making. I hope you had fun with the puppy. I don’t like Blue Heelers. Maybe it’s the way my brother raises his, I don’t know. I find them to be very irritating. But then, my brother is very irritating, too, LOL. Ah, sorry, but I did laugh at your “extreme heat warning.” No humidity? Then that doesn’t even count! You would NOT have enjoyed our weekend.

Today I did Live Combat Cardio which is boxing with some kicking and bags, and nothing at all complicated. Then I did Live PHA - No Repeats. Very fast paced and definitely keeps the heart rate up.

Valerie 80-90 here is generally not pleasant because of the humidity. Today and tomorrow temps are 70-75 which is my favorite!

Shannon the thing is that my sister and I think alike in so many ways, our Facebook feeds are very similar as we keep sharing things that the other has seen. LOL But when it comes to things like decorating and social activities we are really different. So, when we are actually together the differences are pretty noticeable, except that we both like to hike.

Hi Diane Sue, Judy and Carolyn.

This morning I did X Train Hard Strikes cardio kickboxing and added some extra stretching at the end. My time was 40 minutes, 273 calories burned, average heart rate 131, and maximum heart rate 162.

Shannon, great job with RWH Low Impact HiiT One and Two, LMR Functional Mobility Fusion, Lower Body Balance discs, Anytime Mobility, and Functional Core Fusion. Fortunately the humidity doesn’t always give me a headache or I wouldn’t be able to function.

Cathy, great job with Live Combat Cardio and Live PHA—No Repeats. My two sisters and I have very different personalities. I think that’s the way that it is with siblings.

Hello to Judy, Diane Sue, and Valerie.

Oh, I do need to add a caveat about the heat. Last summer when I was in California, I discovered that HOT is HOT, whether or not there is humidity. They were in the middle of a monstrous heat wave with temps 100+. Not a drop of humidity. I'd go out for a walk, and instead of the sweat running down my arms and legs like it does here, it would immediately evaporate and leave dried salt all over me. And boy was it HOT. Not to mention the day I pulled into Needles, CA, before I drove north to my grandmother's. I got out to get gas and thought OMG, how does anybody live in this godforsaken desert? It was 116 degrees, no kidding. So yeah, I'm ready for winter. :p

my sister and I arent even the same species! we agree on nothing. i only deal with her because no one else will and its not likely to change. even her kids wont talk to her anymore.

so many places are HOT. its maybe a little less uncomfortable than humid places but just in a different way. Californa and arizona, eastern WA and OR get that hot.
WA it was 115 degrees coming back from Montana with our camper. the AC was barely working. very very long day. dh is from central valley in CA and so grew up with 100+ temps all the time. people didnt even have AC then. nothing i will try to get used to. he long ago lost ability to tolerate it. humidity makes it way worse. I used to go to work early just to get someplace that had AC. I dont mind cold at all, but forget heat.

what we found was that newly "developed" areas are where people get really pissy about roads and dont want anyone walking or cycling anywhere nearby. all the younger soccer moms and dads are in a hurry and will run your ass over in a heartbeat.

Today I just did a Jessica Smith Walk and Talk, 16 minutes, 100 calories, heart rate 126/155. 155 seems kind of high to me for what I was doing. My daughter and grandson came over today to help with some things.

Good morning. Yesterday I did my own weight lifting routine, as usual. Nothing new there.

Cathy – Good job on your two Cathe Live workouts. Sounds like you got a great workout. My sister and I both love to hike too – one of our few similarities.

Carolyn – Great work on Hard Strikes. I’m glad the humidity doesn’t bother you that much all the time. We are getting a bit of a break from it today. It was a very nice, cool morning.

Valerie – Incredible that it was so hot in Washington already! That doesn’t bode very well for the rest of the summer. You are right about the younger “adults” being so much pissier about roads. The older folks who have lived around here for a long time are much friendlier and just wave to me if I’m out walking. It’s the newbies that give me problems.

Diane – I’m glad your daughter and grandson came to help you yesterday.

Hello to Judy.

shannon it has not been that hot in WA this year yet. didnt type that right. it was last summer or the year before with the 115 readings but it was early in the season . this year it was in the low 100's on eastern WA and low 90's in parts of western. we got to mid 80'shere but it wasnt bad although we do run the AC. our house gets warm upstairs making sleeping hard while the main floor stays pleasant.

we find less busy farming areas are ok to ride in although potatoes and ears of corn flying off trucks are dangerous. most of the field workers are mexican and nobody wants to be singled out ( especially lately now that we want to throw out all the people who do the drudge work) so they are very careful drivers. especially these days. ride near a new housing subdivision and prepare to be .... afraid, very afraid! precious kiddos locked down in the back seat and everyone else be damned. most of the older people are less hurried. not all though, some old guy blew thru a flashing light and stop sign last week but i stopped us because i dont trust anyone's driving. when I watch adults, who must have been drivers for 40 years, try to park in the gigantic stalls at costco is when I realized decent driving judgement is not a common quality. no wonder my poor car has dents and scrapes all around, none of which i caused.

last night I did my usual therapy, 10 min warm up on spin bike and LMR upper body. i do tripod on knees and skip the supermans.

Sunday I did a 20-minute Peloton HiiT ride and another 60 minutes of easier riding. I also did a 45-minute Yin Yoga class in the evening. Yesterday I did a 60-minute Peloton Total Body Strength class and 20 minutes of rowing. Today I did a 20 minute Peloton Ride and 20 minutes of foam rolling.

Cathy-Great job with Live Metabolic Med Ball, Upper Body Balance Discs, Live Combat Cardio and Live PHA-No Repeats.

Valerie- Great job with your 15 mile ride, therapy work, and LMR upper body.

Carolyn-Great job with your yoga/mobility, X Train Hard Strikes cardio kickboxing and stretching. I get headaches from weather changes too. They’ve gotten worse as I’ve gotten older but fortunately, they aren’t too bad or too frequent to be a big deal.

Shannon-Great job with RWH Low Impact HiiT One and Two, LMR Functional Mobility Fusion, Lower Body Balance discs, Anytime Mobility, Functional Core Fusion and your weight workout.

Diane Sue-Great job with Jessica Smith Walk and Talk.

Today I did P30 Perfect Pump Upper Body. That was 38 miles, 123 calories burned, average heart rate 105, and maximum heart rate 129. I had to go to the grocery store and Costco after my workout. My daughter and her family are coming tomorrow for a short visit which means that I needed much more food around here. More food and different from what we have on a daily basis.

Diane Sue, nice job with your JS Walk and Talk. I’m glad that your daughter and grandson came over to help me out.

Shannon, good job with your own weight lifting routine. We lived in Texas for several years so I know about the 100 degree plus weather without the humidity. We went to Arizona one summer and it was 114/115 degrees every day. It’s a different kind of miserable.

Valerie, nice work the spin bike warm up, therapy, and LMR Upper Body. I also do tripod kick backs on my knees.

Judy, great job with the Peloton rides, rowing, strength, Yin Yoga, and foam rolling.

Hello to Cathy.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I did X10, the X62 premix. It was very much a Shannon’s version, since I changed everything, including the weight segments, to low impact cardio. I got a good workout, and I like the mood of this DVD. Decent music, etc.

Valerie – I’m glad it’s not that hot in WA yet. It’s not too bad here, compared to what summer will be like in a month or so. I modify the tripod exercises, going down to my elbows so my hands don’t have to bear the weight. It’s a little easier but still gives a similar effect.

Judy – Wow, great work on your long Peloton workouts Sunday and Monday. Foam rolling is one form of exercise I refuse to do. I’ve tried it. No way.

Carolyn – Nice job with Perfect Pump Upper Body. I hope you and your daughter and family have a nice visit. Yeah, I guess extreme heat is miserable no matter how you slice it.

Hello to Cathy and Diane.

Yesterday I went to the zoo and my parents. They had part of the zoo closed to pave a dirt path, which is actually a fair bit of my walk in the African half of the zoo, so it cut into my time. You have to go to where it's blocked off and back and then do the backside also out and back. I did it twice, but it didn't make up for two normal loops. My Mom has fully accepted using the ramp now. Today I did Live Metabolic Mix Up. It's listed as moderate and it definitely was, though it didn't feel very balanced to me. Alternated weights/no weights. Also did Live Standing Weight Plates and Restorative Yoga. Lucky me I have a dentist appointment today. Nick is doing a practice MCAT exam today and does the real one on Saturday. After that he can start working on med school applications. Derek is on day 2 at the Omaha Zoo. One thing he learned is that when leaving straight from work and changing from his work clothes along the way and tossing them in the trunk, is that the trunk reeks. LOL

Shannon the only time I was in CA was for a conference in the Bay Area, which people tell me doesn't get really hot. I was there in September and we mostly were just in the hotel, but the couple times we were out it was so stifling. I hated the feeling like it was sucking all the air out of me. It's been staying cool so far here, though we are going over 80 today. I think we've only used the air once so far, but the heat is still running most nights as the temps are mostly in the 50's. Usually by now I can sleep with a window open, but I haven't done it once so far.

Carolyn enjoy your time with your daughter and her family today.

Valerie I live in a farming area, but our "block" is bordered on 2 sides by what are considered main roads, so we get semi's and in general no one pays attention to the speed limit.

Hi Judy and Diane Sue.

cathy SF prides itself you never needing AC. Ive been there when it really really did. hotels/motels are not geared for any cross ventilation. rooms are always hot and stuffy and full of stale air. Ive stayed in plenty and not anything i enjoy. my least favorite activity. yes, speed limits are viewed as a "suggestion". we are lucky, there are enough minimal use small roads in the farming area to let us carve out a pleasant bike route. there are 3 bridges that must be crossed using various tactics. staying to the side shoulder is not the best one. going early sunday morning before traffic builds is best. one bridge just take the entire lane and keep traffic behind. if you squeeze to the side someone will assume there is enough room and pass you without using the oncoming. feeling the heat of the car going by too close is extremely scary. taking the lane makes them wait or pass when there is no oncoming. watching people park is enough to learn there is no judgement of how close they are getting.

my poor DH's teeth are an unending problem. two more root canals. an infected implant done 10 yrs ago. and all has to be resolved and done before he can even talk to the orthopedic people about his knee. this is turning out to be a very bad year for us. my knee is not better really but still functioning ok. i thought it was the main problem and was hoping to get another hiking season out of it, and now we cant even think about hiking.

shannon I hate foam rolling too. it hurts and doesn't make anything feel better. I think i could do tripods with lighter weights but i am careful about getting my back in twisty positions so i do them on my knees and focus on tris. I do overhead presses sitting down now at least some of the time. i dont need back support, just sitting puts the work into arms and shoulders not midback.

I rode mountain bike around our community for 45 minutes. cant inflate it into more than that.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I did my own yoga routine. I did a bunch of standing balance poses and flow sort of stuff – proof that yes, you can do yoga without a single down dog. I did about 45 minutes of that, and then transitioned into deeper stretching. I guess all total it was about 80 minutes. Very satisfying, and I could feel the one-legged balance poses working my legs, especially as I moved from one to another without any pauses in between. I’d say this sort of yoga is closer to a workout than a recovery/rest, but not in the hot, sweaty workout way. I just felt a lot more worked than what my yoga DVDs give me.

Cathy – I hope it doesn’t take too long for the zoo to finish paving the walk so you can get back into your routine. I’m very glad your mom is using the ramp. That’s great news! I hope the dentist appointment wasn’t too painful. I think CA gets a lot hotter than it used to. I know it does for sure where my grandmother lives. She never used to have heat waves like the one I experienced last summer. I blame climate change. We lived in San Jose when I was young, and had relatives in San Francisco. It was always cool there when we visited, and San Jose was very nice too, from what I remember. But I guess it’s not surprising that climate change is affecting SF, like everywhere else.

Valerie – Dang, I’m really sorry about DH’s teeth! Health issues have really exploded for him. Not good that he has to endure his knee problem for so long, either. How is he doing? My feelings exactly about foam rolling!

Hello to Carolyn, Judy and Diane.

This morning I did IMAX 4 before shopping.

Shannon that's great that you've found a yoga routine that works so well for you. It sounds like the path at the zoo should be open by the time I go again on Tuesday. I have long had issues with getting my lower teeth cleaned, and started getting the bottoms numbed about 30 years ago. Yesterday she got it perfectly, and it's a fairly involved process. She's on maternity leave at the time I'm due again, and I told her make really good notes for the other hygienist! I've had her before though and she's also very good. Escaped with nothing needed further attention. I was in SF in the mid-90's and whenever I mention the heat everyone rushes to assure me that SF isn't hot-but I know what I felt. LOL

Valerie I'm really sorry that your DH's teeth are creating so many issues for him right now. You certainly haven't had a good year. My experience with the hotel in SF was that like pretty much all other meeting rooms I've ever been in they were freezing. Which is probably why the difference with the outside was extra dramatic.

" we" went for a root canal this morning. i drove. it took 2 and a half hours but went well. we will tick these things off, one at a time. DH did not get good care as a child. he and his sister both inherited some affinity for problems, and have similar problems. he has been hypervigilant so we will get thru this. its so helpful to get good care givers who know what you need, especially for dental that is just the worst for most of us.

we used to have sales meetings often in the Bay area. i would think newer hotels have AC but they never used to. just sitting in a meeting does not keep the blood flowing. i always wore things with sleeves or carried a jacket. San Jose was the first place I saw a car with AC! must be about 1965, i was on a trip with a girlfriend and her aunt picked us up at the airport and it was very hot but the AC was going full speed. I had never been in car with air before. i had led a sheltered life.
