Pentagenarians & Beyond: July 26, 2026

Did my large shopping run to Costco early today. then did some garden work, dropped primary ballots off at the PO and two series of stretches before and after shopping then did half of stacked upper body and another set of stretches. it was better than my try at stacked upper body a few days ago. have to do that twice a week , or some other upper body weight work. still feeling very tight and stuff in the hip and back area. not quite as bad as last week but something is definitely in need of some help. also walked around our yard some, pulled some weeds, and watered some new plants since its very very dry.
I dont know why i let upper body weights slip away for a few weeks. definitely can tell the difference. i long ago gave up on lower body weight work because of knee issues but i can stay in reasonable shape with walking and riding. my core strength is good because of how often i do those exercises, but arms go downhill in a hurry without weights. somehow i got busy and wasnt paying attention. its funny how triceps and shoulders seem to stay fit but the biceps go downhill in a heartbeat.

monday morning and i am finally getting improvement from my PT session last week. i am not sure what caused the issue but i have been so tight and hurting on left side and hip area i didnt think i was going to ever get better. it has kept me awake at night a lot, could not get comfortable in any position. still no hip xray results.

this morning i did a half hour of stretching and had much better ROM and feel less tight. Im sure it was something in PT last Monday. I had done a lot of walking over the weekend ( 10 miles) and was not tight or sore from it. this started later monday after PT. stretches I could not do all week felt much better this morning. i get frightened when i get that sore. Afraid I will not get better. sorry for the drama but there did not seem to be any reason for the level of soreness i got that was not helped by anything. last night was the first night I didnt wake up multiple times unable to get comfortable.

Today I did Jessica Smith’s Steady, Ready, Go interval workout. That was 32 minutes, 171 calories burned, average heart rate 116, and maximum heart rate 143.

Valerie, I’m glad that the pain and soreness is starting to get better. I went to Costco too. I needed paper products and most importantly coffee beans.

Hello to Judy and Cathy.

Hi everyone. Did not mean to vanish for a week. Nick is now moved to West Des Moines, and I’ve added Iowa to my states visited list. Traded driving in and out of the DFW area, with 80 by Chicago. Came home yesterday, on a Sunday, and it was a four lane creeping parking lot. But, it’s a one day, no hotel needed trip. Knocks $300-400 off a trip to see him. I can now leap frog to and him and Derek with no hotel but I will always do just to and from Derek’s through the UP. Not adding more of I-80 than I need to.

This morning I did Met-Con Mash Up. Really kept my heart rate up. Derek arrives Sunday, so not sure how my few days after that will be for workouts, as we’ll need early starts to places.

Yesterday I did a 20-minute Peloton HiiT Ride and 15 minutes of PT work for my hip. Today I did a 30 minute Peloton Full Body workout, a 10-minute Peloton lower body add on workout and a 10-minute Peloton Core workout.

Carolyn-Great job with your yoga/mobility and Steady, Ready, Go. I need to do a Costco run soon.

Valerie-Great job with the stretches and stacked upper body. It’s good that your pain is better.

Cathy-Great job with Met-Con Mash Up. I’m glad Nick got moved in. What did you think of Iowa? Did you drive through the Quad Cities?

We rode our regular trail this morning for an hour and 20 minutes. have not seen any mergansers like we saw last year. the swifts that nest in our chimney have started flying. they left about a week ago but come back several times during the day and at night for a while until they are strong enough to leave. also did stretch series 2x already. I still have not gotten results back on those plain xrays from early Wed last week. thi is beyond ridiculous. its 6 days now. i am amazed this place stays in business. Its called Rayus and has clinics around the country. i will complain loudly once i get the results. ive called several times now and got nowhere.

Carolyn you are right about Costco and coffee! we get our beans there too.

Cathy isnt it unpleasant how the interstate highway system has become a large scale slow moving parking lot. its terrible here too but there are few alternatives.

Today I did P 30 Perfect Pump Upper Body, 40 minutes, 106 calories burned, average heart rate 103 and maximum heart rate 136. I finished up with the Extended stretch.

Cathy, I’m glad that you had a good trip and got Nick settled in Des Moines. Nice job with Met-Con Mash Up.

Judy, great job with Peloton HiiT ride, Peloton Full Body, Peloton Lower Body, and Core.

Valerie, nice job with your trail ride. I love the Costco Kirkland Signature Colombian coffee beans. I try other brands, but I rely on the Kirkland beans.

Today I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, Workout Two, 29 minutes, 186 calories burned, average heart rate 126, and maximum heart rate 149.

Have a great day everyone.

Yesterday I did LMR2 Balance Fusion and then I went and walked at the zoo before going to my parents. This morning I did the combo LMR2 cardio workout I put together, with the standing weight work at the end, and then I did Restorative Yoga. The plumber was here, around 9 so I did the yoga upstairs. Looks like we’ll be replacing the pump. Not a cheap thing.

Judy I came across on 35 and 80. I remember seeing the sign for Davenport, so I must have been near. i liked that part of Iowa. Rolling hills, trees and even the fields aren’t flat. considering I’d always heard Iowa was corn fields and telephone poles, I was pleasantly surprised. I’m very jealous of how close Nick is to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

Valerie I think the Detroit area is the only place in MI that has that level of parking lot traffic, and lucky me, I’ll be going to the Detroit zoo next week when Derek comes home. But he can play navigator.

trying to layout a workout plan, but I have a fair amount of travel coming up. I’ll have a month between Derek leaving and going to Nick’s and then on to Derek’s, then in October, I’ll visit my sister. After that no where till spring. I want to get back into lifting heavier, it just keeps not happening.

Cathy we use I-90 a lot going seattle to Montana most of the way is fast and efficient. but when one gets close to Seattle/Bellevue area it turns into a parking lot. I-5 anywhere near Seattle is horrid and the "bypass" 405 is just as bad. We seldom use I-5 thru Seattle unless there is absolutely no other choice. if we are going south we will go east on I 90 and then south on I-82 to I-84 or various other work-arounds. much of the time Ive lived here, I-5 was busy and there were times best avoided but it is so hideous now that I would rather just not go. there is no such thing as going early or late to avoid commute time.
all the time I lived in Wisconsin, i never went to Iowa. Travel was such a big deal back then that even a drive to Madison was a big trip! we went thru chicago a few times. mostly people drove to the border to buy colored margarine at a case price. neighbors would get together and someone would buy several cases for each other. the state did not allow colored margarine but sold this white stuff that looked like lard with a dye tablet in the package. you let it come to room temp and massaged it to mix in the dye and make it yellow. The powerful dairy lobby was behind that. butter prices were high and people thought they could not afford it. I dont remember when that changed but a long time ago.
We didnt travel when I was young. Im sure there are more interesting parts of Wisconsin than Milwaukee area. back then there was no Interstate and cars were very unreliable and constantly breaking down. it was a way different world in 1955.

I did very extensive stretching and some upper body exercises yesterday. ended up spending a good 90 minutes by end of the day.
