Pentagenarians & Beyond: 11/17/2024

Just finished a mix I put together from Intensity, a very well named workout! Derek was, as he termed it, being an adult, and filled out his first apartment application last night. It's 4 minutes from the zoo. Very different than his multiple highway 30 minute drive now. And where his current zoo, gives all staff a couple T-shirts with the logo on them, because they are open year round, this zoo gives them a T-shirt, a hoodie and a winter coat! Do you all think my DH would be agreeable to me taking off for a couple weeks next spring. Stop in Marquette for hiking, on to Bismarck to see Derek, drop straight down to Fort Worth to see Nick...I'm thinking not, but we'll see. LOL

Valerie I can still do Lotus, but generally don't since nothing I do uses it, but when I was in elementary school (3-5th grades) we had school sings where we all went to the gym and sat on the floor the whole time. One day I got this great idea to do lotus position for the WHOLE thing. Got done and I could barely stand up. LOL I'm sure I was being all smug that I did it and trying desperately to hide the fact that it did me in, but all I remember is doing it. My husband would never attempt to do the computer stuff, and he seems to have gotten over be upset about what happens after an update, but for years, after every update, he'd go on and on about having to close out everything to use it. You'd think at this point in their existence, Apple would have figured out how for them NOT to open up every application after an update so that you have to close them all, but no.

Carolyn it's definitely easier to buy greens at the store especially pre washed ones.

Hi Shannon, Judy and Diane Sue.

Today I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga for 18 minutes.

Judy, thanks for starting the thread this week.

Cathy, great job with your Intensity mix workout. Derek’s new employer sounds like they are serious about recruitment and retention. That would be quite the two week trip if you could swing it. I always buy my greens in bunches, but I just didn’t want to deal without them this weekend. I hope that they look good next weekend. I plan to cook a collards/kale mix for Thanksgiving as one of my vegetable side dishes. I will cook them in advance and freeze.

Diane Sue, I know that you are having a wonderful day with your family.

Hello to Valerie and Shannon.

what can I say? I can sit cross legged but my knees are high. my mother used to complain when I was a kid because all the floor sitting in school got my socks dirty! after 10-15 yrs of yoga knees are just as high. never changed even a little. I've seen new, first time people show up in class and sit down, even men, and their hips open outward and their knees go almost flat. that convinced me it's anatomy. maybe some folks become more flexible and change their position a little, but not everyone. fire log was another pose that was a joke for me. shoulder moves I could always do easily. I never stopped trying but hips didnt give a damn.

good idea carolyn to prep in advance. I do a lot of things ahead of time. we don't do big dinners anymore but with one oven, it wasn't possible to do everything at once.

I ended up doing therapy , 35 min spin, and a half an upper4 body workout yesterday.

No workout today, not even the back pod work. We had our family Thanksgiving dinner and I am getting ready to go to bed. We had a nice time and played games later. Tomorrow I will pack up leftovers in smaller containers and some will go in the freezer.

Cathy, nice work on the new mix from Intensity. My husband would want to go with me. That is a nice perk getting the t shirts, hoodie and coat for working at the zoo.
I am like Valerie, my right knee is always way up in the air. Years of yoga and trying have not changed anything.

Carolyn, nice work on the Jane Adams Gentle Yoga today. I always feel like the greens go bad faster than when I get them and chop them up myself.

Valerie, nice work on therapy, spin, and half of an upper body

Happy Monday, everyone. I did my usual 5-mile walks Saturday and Sunday. The big excitement was on Sunday, when two bee keepers came to remove a hive from my Granny’s trailer. She passed away a few years ago, and since then a family friend has been renting it. He’s moved out, and we’re getting ready to pull the trailer out. Over the years, bees have built a hive in the wall and up under the eaves. The bee keepers relocated the hive to one of those bee boxes and set it up against the edge of the forest in the back yard. It was fascinating to watch them, and they told us all sorts of stuff about bees. It was a huge hive!

Judy – I’m sorry you have IT band tendonitis, and I hope it heals quickly. But like you, very glad it’s not worse!

Cathy – LOL that your workout manager thinks more of your abilities than you do! Hey, it’s just challenging you to reach higher and lift more! Congrats to Derek on his new job – and on the free coat and stuff. Very nice! I think you should take that multi-week vacation next spring, whether DH wants to or not!

Valerie – Yep, let DH have the technology setup job if he wants it. It’s a pain in the patooty, and if I had a DH, I’d let him do it too. Thanks for the info about the bikes at Costco. I think we have one in Little Rock – I’ll have to check. Yep, anatomy has a lot to do with yoga and flexibility. Over the years, my hips have become more flexible, but nothing dramatic. I will never be able to put my knees to the floor when the soles of my feet are together in cobbler’s pose. Never. And that’s okay.

Carolyn – Cold and sunny sounds lovely. I wish it would be cold here. Lucky you! I like Yoga Relax too. Cathe has some pretty decent, solid yoga routines. I’m not really sure I’ll keep yoga in my workout schedule, but I feel like I should. It’s one of those things I’m playing around with right now. I used to like it more than I do now.

Diane – I’m glad your family Thanksgiving was a good one. I’m sure you were tired, but it was a “good tired,” as they say, right?

Just finished STS Disk 21 Back and Biceps. My lower back was being cranky, so I skipped the deadlifts and stretched it during that time and it feels way better. At this point, I will never voluntarily travel more than an hour or so with DH. He is really NOT a good traveler. That trip in particular, would mean hotel stays where you check in and don't leave until check out. He gets SO bored. The boys and I do quite well as we have things to do/watch on our devices, but he can't do that. And the stops with the boys would likely include times when they are working an neither place really has much to do that we would enjoy. Again, he'd be bored. LOL I just want to have time with them, but he's not social and even with them his conversations are awkward. So, all in all, I'm over any attempt to do that. LOL

Going to be weird holidays here. Derek doesn't work Thanksgiving, so I'll do a meal for the three of us, it'll be the first time we've done Christmas on our own, as until this year Nick has flown home for it, and Derek will be gone about a week before Nick gets here. They want him to start Dec 27, so he'll be traveling over Christmas, and being Derek he's planning to work in stops at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and the Minnesota Zoo outside the twin cities cause he's crazy.

Shannon that is really cool that you got to see them move the bees. Anytime a hive can be saved and moved is huge given the population decline. Great that you got in your hikes. Do you always go to the same place?

Diane Sue I'm glad you had a nice early Thanksgiving with your family.

Valerie did you regularly sit on the floor in school to get your socks so dirty? We only did it at school assemblies. I do agree that people's anatomy can be structured differently for sure. I was incredibly flexible when I was younger, but could never do the Chinese splits yet I had a friend I cheered with them who could do those, while not having much of any back flexibility.

Hi Judy!

my mother was weird about so many things. cathy, they always had us come to front of the room and sit around the teacher in a semi circle. we all sat cross legged. we girls all wore white ankle sox. they probably did get dirty but really. what a silly thing to get riled about. we had 30-39 kids in a classroom. it was probably easier to talk to us when we were closer.
I think it has to do with the hip socket and how the ball-and-socket bone fits into the joint. its natural for many, not possible for others. I'm overly flexible in many places. no matter what I tried there was no change in hip mobility. hips ( so far) work fine and Ive hiked and ridden a million miles but no lotus.

too bad DH is such a bad traveler. I dont like drives but I can entertain myself and DH for 12 hours with puzzles and reading to myself or aloud. DH listens to sirius I tolerate it. tired of the same old thing. internet coverage is good most of the way and the areas where its not are smaller sections that im familiar with. lucky I can read without getting motion sick. I cant sleep.
we were hoping to go to montana next weekend. weather looks doubtful. undecided/.
shannon how cool to see a hive being moved! weve had big hornet/yellow jacket nests but never a bee hive.

Today I did JS Pyramid Power Walk for 30 minutes, 201 calories burned, average heart rate 128 and maximum heart rate 160.

Valerie, good job with therapy, the 35 minute spin and upper body work. I can’t sit cross legged either.

Diane Sue, I’m glad that you had a nice early Thanksgiving with your family.

Shannon, your walks sound very relaxing. How nice that you could see the bee hives moved.

Cathy, good job with STS disc 21 Back and Biceps. Holiday celebrations definitely change as our children grow up and have their own lives. We will have one daughter and her family for Thanksgiving this year, but they won’t be here for Christmas. They alternate years with his family. The other two daughters can’t come for Thanksgiving.

Have a good day everyone.
