Pentagenarians & Behind: W/B 5/5

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I haven't been online for a couple of days. I’ve been getting caught up on housecleaning (housemax) and organizing. Tuesday I did one of the Core Max workouts, the one with mostly stability ball work. I’m still paying for it. I really need to work on core strength. Wednesday I had a massage and chiropractic appointment so it was a rest day. Today it was so nice out I did about a 3 mile walk/jog. Tomorrow will probably be a light morning workout since we’re doing the mountain bike ride on Saturday.

I have to get back on track with strength training next week. One of my goals will be to do 2 core workouts a week.

Deb, I had a road bike about 12 years ago, a Trek 1000, that I ended up selling on ebay because I couldn’t get comfortable on it. I think the frame was a little too small. I have 3 mountain bikes, a 1997 Gary Fisher and 2 Haros that are about 10 years old. I think it's time for an upgrade

Garance, I am in SE Michigan, we live about 25 miles outside of Detroit. I’m originally from Iowa, and have lived in Michigan since 2007.

Valerie, so happy you are getting new bikes! I bet you will really enjoy them! Hopefully we’ll be making a trip to the bike store soon too! :)

Hi to Lori and Josie!

Good evening ladies!

Ran this morning on TM this morning and that was it. Worked a little later than expected so by the time I got home just did not have the energy.

Valerie...congrats to you and your husband on your new bikes. How exciting! I bet it will make a huge difference with your comfort. You guys now will be biking 50 miles easily!

Garance sorry to hear about your leg. It does seem like a long process.

Congrats Josie on maintaining that weight loss. You may have not loss weight but I bet you are building muscle. Since I started weight training I loss about 13lbs but went from a size 10 to a 6. It amazes me at the weight I am I fit into a size 6 jeans.

Hi to the traveling Deb! And to Judy!

Lori

Hi all

Made it to the show site in Ohio in about 8 hours. That counts all the stops for both us and the dogs!

I was happy that the hotel has free wifi so I can use my iPad.

Valerie, nice that you decided to get new bikes, very exciting..:)

Garance, too bad about the vein procedure having to do it again, , but at least one is good!

Josie, Great job on the weight loss and the inches loss too!

Judy, I hear you on the core work, my least favorite workout, so of course it's the one I need the most.

Lori, only one workout today? LOL..

Off to take the dogs outside...not as easy as opening the back door and letting them out....have to take then down in the elevator, which they had never been in before..

Take care,

Judy, this is quite a coincidence.. my old bike is a Trek 1000! of all the bikes- how weird we'd have the same one. mine will get traded in next week. this shop fixes them up, resells them or donates, depending. If you haven't been in a bike shop this year, prepare to be amazed at what's happened to mt bikes in the last year. wow. they do everything but fly. and some cost as much as an airplane.
I have a very simple entry level mt bike, not sure I'd spend on fancy features. mine is unbreakable. mine fell off the back of our car on the freeway t 70 mph and a pedal got broken! otherwise all OK. nicer shifting would be good. you definitely need to be in the proper gear before you start climbing or it won't change smoothly. but we are probably "spent out" on bikes for the year.

Josie congrats on the losses. muscle takes up so much less space than fat, easier to maintain a manageable weight, and it sounds like you are doing well and not regaining. Does the garage get too hot in summer or can you use it all year?
I am still on my diet. slow but sure. I could not get into size 6 jeans if I weighed 100 lbs, legs are too bulky. I have not been shopping yet, somehow this week the time evaporated.

I really like and recommend the Core 1 workout that's on several of the X-train disks. a fast combination of effective exercises. I stick on the end of other workouts. I have no problem getting that one in several times a week. not "easy" but no moves are too hard
... I've always liked sit ups and missed them when it seemed like crunches took over. this one has some of each. I used the Coremax disk for a long time but got sick of it. each section had something I didn't like. I will never be able to do levitation holds, for example. some kind of mental disconnect for me.

Lynda, hope the leg procedure gets done soon. assume you want to get into shorter pants as the weather warms up.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Cardio Leg Blast (56 min.). Next week I start meso 2 of STS.

Nope, it's not going to be quick. This vascular surgeon only does veins on Wednesdays, and the soonest he will do the vein closure is July 10. I also have a "finishing" sclerotherapy on my right leg on June 5.

Valerie, I thought Lincoln was pretty slow as well. I enjoyed all of the performances though--not just DDL's--and thought it was relevant to the dysfunction in Washington today, except that today Lincoln's party has some pretty racist members. I watched Martha Marcie Mae Marlene last night. Really creepy. Enjoy your new bikes!

Judy, I'm a transplanted Midwesterner--grew up in Minnesota and my Dad was born in Iowa.

How is the dog trial, Deb?

Hi Ladies,

No workout today. Tomorrow is pure cardio and a run and Sunday I might do the sculpt class.

Lori, I’m 5’6” and wear a size 10 right now, but would like to get into my 8’s by the end of June. I may reach my goal one I finish the second round of Insanity ;) I have some 6’s in my closet, but at that time I looked very skinny and had lost my curves. I’m saving them for my DD.

Valerie, my garage is very comfortable because where I live it is always 20 degrees cooler that inland. I plan on buying a fan just in case it gets hot.

I want to wish every one a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Josie

Wanted to jump on real quick.....

Irongrl....STS is the deal of the day. $149 plus is you use the SAVE15 you'll get another 15% off. Great deal!

I'll check in with you all later!

Hi ladies!

Once again only one workout today! :) I was planning Tabatacise tonight with the fire walker loops and did not want to over do with a run.

Josie at your height you must look great in a 10. I agree 6 would be too small for you. As we age I firmly believe we look younger with a little meat on our bones. I have curves too and as I get older I have learned to embraced them!

Valerie...unbelievable with your bike falling off your car. That could have been disastrous in so many ways. Wow! I like the core 1 workouts too.

My husband was born in Minnesota. I was born and raised here in Massachusetts. We are done with the winters here and have made it our goal to relocate in a few years to ANYWHERE warmer. :)

Have a great night!!!

Hi Ladies,

Deb-Do you have Fox Terriers and are you showing them? Sorry if you posted that already, I might have missed it. Have fun in Ohio!

Valerie-That is a coincidence! I had the yellow Trek 1000. I had it from April to Sept. 2001 and put about 800 miles on it before I sold it. The thing was that my neck and shoulders were so sore from riding it, that I kept going back to riding my mountain bike. The guys at the bike store tried all kinds of adjustments but I just could not get comfortable on it. My Gary Fisher Marlin was $299 new in 1997 and is the bike I rode the most over the years. I’ve been in a few bike shops recently but haven’t really been shopping for a bike. I can only imagine how much things have changed! I don’t even know where to begin. The 29 inch tires seem way too big to me, but that seems to be the most popular size now.

I really hear you on the levitation holds! I try as hard as I can and there is no way I can do that..

Josie-great job on the weight loss!

Garance- What part of Iowa was your dad from? I’m from the Davenport-Bettendorf area. I still miss it and would love to move back there.

Lori-Thanks for the tip on STS!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Judy

Another former mid westerner here. born and raised in Milwaukee but moved out west when in my mid 20's.

I bought the Trek 1000 around 2009. we used to ride a lot but had a couple near misses with cars, and gave it up for years. decided to re-try. bought entry level bikes because we didn't expect to ride that much. DH has been happy with his but mine has always been a problem. mostly the derailleur and the seat. lots of readjustments but never was "right" for long. bought the mt bikes shortly after but it took me a long time to get acclimated to riding over rocks and roots. I'm much better at it now but need to go regularly or I get "hesitant" again, and "aggressive" works better on a mt bike.

Judy, we put a bike rack on a car with a rear spoiler not knowing it was unsafe. rack fit fine but it pitched a bike off at a very bad time. we were lucky it wasn't destroyed. could have caused a major crash. the car behind us stopped and blocked the lane so we could run back and get it. which put even more vehicles at risk. but he would have damaged his own car if he'd run over it. everyone lucked out that day!

I'm sure 29 inch tires will be too big. probably perfect for many men and tall women. I see men all the time who look like they're riding their kid's bike. all kinds of bright colors, fancy suspension/shock absorber looking devices. mine is simple, pedals and brakes are it. fenders, sort of.

Lynda, loved tommy lee Jones too. some very clever funny lines. politically all the manipulations were fascinating .... but it didn't move quickly enough. the whole movie seemed dark and slow..... maybe an attempt to duplicate the real world at that time, which was likely darker and slower than now. I have to admit I got distracted by the phone calls, and then it's hard to pay attention to the screen.

Greetings from Ohio!

We did the obedience match last night and Keegan took 1st place and High in trial for Rally. Kylee was not up to her usual good work, but still tied for 1st i the obedience match, which was after a run off where he lost to the other dog she tied with, no big thing good practice for us both .

The "real" conformation stuff started today (Westminster type of showing). Not our thing but interesting to see all theses Wires in one place.

Later...

Hi All,

Just a quick check in, my husband and I finished our mountain bike race today. It was 13.3 miles. I finished in 2:02 and Chris in around 90 minutes. We were both last in our age groups, but I'm just so happy to have finished with no accidents or problems.

Valerie- I agree, aggressive works better on a mountain bike, and I'm still at the hesitant stage, especially on rocky or sandy downhills. I did feel a little more confident today, but I think I need to ride a trail at least once a week to stay confident.
We had a Saris bones rack a few years ago, but it felt like the bikes were going to go flying off at any moment so we ended up getting a trailer mounted rack.

Deb-congratulations on the obedience match! I have always loved Fox Terriers, one of my favorite breeds.

Judy

Wow Deb, congrats to the doggies! and to you for going to all the drills with them. must be great fun watching them perform, especially when they do what they're supposed to do.

Judy congrats to you to and DH. I'm sure I'll never ride a mt bike race for any reason. I'm very hesitant on downhills and probably always will be. I get nervous about not being able to stop, don't like the speed. I've gotten much better on uphills .... which is how I know aggressive works better..... if you lose your steam, or "over think" the terrain ahead, it's much easier to lose traction, balance and get stopped or fall. I still get knocked off if the rear tire spins for whatever reason.. I do best when I just blast ahead. I've gotten some extensive, massive bruises from crashes. I need to ride a course slowly the first time. once I see there are no life threatening descents, then I let it go more.

we didn't realize that roof strap passing over a rear spoiler makes it ineffective. it must prevent the weight of the bikes from holding themselves down or something. regardless, lesson learned.

we did another 25 mile road bike yesterday, 2 hours, and of course, now that we have new bikes coming, both of our bikes performed beautifully and were comfortable. go figure.
the day before I did the x train bi & tri, disk 2. I like that one a lot alternating back and forth. If I ride this much I feel fine about skipping leg workouts. weather looks like going back to rain so there will be balance. we have another long weekend coming next weekend, 5 days. we'll be riding and maybe hiking depending on how high the snow level is. probably still too early to do anything but low elevation things.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did disk 13 of STS for ch, sh, tris (65 min.).

Deb, give Keegan a high five for me. What a little smartie!

Judy, my dad was born in Ames Iowa. Good for you on your race! Sounds like you picked the right thread to join with all of the bikers here.

Valerie, I actually thought Bradley Cooper gave DDL a run for his money on the Oscar. His performance in Silver Linings Playbook was more risky and just seemed like it had a lot more energy to it. But then he was playing someone who was bipolar.

I received flowers and an iTunes giftcard for Mother's Day. DH is taking me out to dinner tonight too.

Happy Mother's Day!

Hope everyone is enjoying their day!

I finished up week 1 of meso2 yesterday. I really really love this mesocycle. Starting to see awesome results from xtrain then 5 weeks of STS.

Did anyone not do the 1 rep max? I chose not to and not sorry that I didn't. Cathe states that you do not have to but the results would be less compared to those that did. Maybe so but I am still very happy with the results so far and to me that is what is important. :)

My son bought me a Cathe gift card. My hint worked! And also a pair of 35lb dumbells. The weights were a surprise. He thought it was funny to be buying his mom weights for mothers day but knew I would love them. He also took me for lunch at Chili's. Was a very nice day. only thing missing is DH since he had to work today :(.

I did RIDE this morning. Fixed peddle yesterday and all seems to be good. Now about to take Chester for a nice long walk to burn off some of those calories consumed at lunch!

Valerie....yes with all that biking I would skip Legs too!

Irongrl...congrats on the race! Makes no difference when you come in. Just doing this was an accomplishment! Good for you and your husband.

Garance....do you notice a difference with STS this time around? Is this your second time or more?

Have a great day everyone.

Hi and Happy Mother's Day to all!

I got a very cute Mother's day card from the "K's".

It was a long trip home, but somehow we managed to shave about 45 minutes off the trip, compared to when we went. Probably because it was Sunday and the traffic was lighter I suppose.

Judy, congratulations on that race! That is great that you were able to complete it, and that you and your DH did it together.

Valerie, what will you do with your current bikes? Did you say that they will take them in as a trade, or was that something else I read?

Lori, I did the 1 Rep Max's when I did STS, and it was a pain. I am not sure it was even worth it. Some of the weights were way off....I ended up just going with what I thought would be a challenge, keeping track and trying to increase where I could. WOW 35 lb db's ...nice!

Garance, nice gift! Are you going to your favorite place for dinner?

It is very cold here today, and windy. Not sure what is happening with our weather this spring. It's been so strange....

Hi to Josie, hope you are celbrating as well..

Take care,

p.s will start a new thread for this week in the morning.

I'm taking the day off of exercise. gotta do that once a week.
Deb, will trade these bikes in. we could (maybe) get more if we tried to sell them ourselves, but I don't want to mess with people coming to our house, and this is simple. a bike shop will have all sizes coming in for bikes and they will get re-sold. they took our very old-old bikes when we bought the ones we're trading in now. I don't know if they used them for parts or upgraded them. I want them to go on to new users, don't want to dump them or store them here.

I didn't do 1 rep max either. I was new to weights and not familiar with most of the exercises so I felt I'd be guessing anyway. I was extremely "on " as I went thru the series. I'd look at Cathe's weight and start somewhat less, like 8 rather than 12 for the first set. then if I thought I should increase, I'd do it for the second set. mark the weight with an up or down arrow. if I could not complete a set. I'd go down right away for the second set, and record what I used. It's fairly intuitive. I think keeping good written records is far more important. if in question, I go lighter. injury is a bigger set back. for me, if I could do a full first set with decent form, then I could usually do 3 sets with the same weight. Besides, doing a whole series of related exercises is NOT the same as doing an isolated set of one particular exercise. just use common sense.

Lynda, Silver Linings is next up on the queue. Did you see the series Boss? with Kelsey Grammar? I'm really enjoying it and am so unhappy to see it got cancelled after 2 seasons.

Hi Ladies,

I hope everyone had a nice Mother's Day :)

I did Xtrain bi's and tri's tonight, and the second core workout from that dvd.

Valerie-thanks, I didn't think I would ever ride a mtb bike race either. I'm not sure what got into me, and I still don't believe I did it. I was very hesitant on the downhills, they were scary. I was also really lucky to hook up with another woman who was riding my pace and had some experience. She really helped me get through it. I'd probably still be out there if she hadn't been there

Great that you got 25 miles in, those new bikes sound really nice!

Garance-thanks, I think I picked the right thread too! Sounds like you had a nice Mother's Day!

Lori-35 lbs! wow, that is awesome! I'm embarrassed to say the heaviest dumbbells I have at home are 15 lbs, but I'm hoping to work up to 25 lbs.
That is a great gift!

Deb-it's freezing here too, it's like winter started all over again :(

Hi to Josie-hope you had a great day!

Judy
