Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

This morning I did disk 25 for chest and back (68 min.). I bench-pressed and deadlifted 50 lbs, but since my dumbbells only go up to 20, I rowed 22 (a little 2 lb. I could also hold), and I did flies with my 20s. I still found this a pretty tough workout, and without a rack, I just cannot hoist the barbell into position into my lap with any more weight.

I think I will be using my tower 20 discount to buy the weighted vest, the weighted gloves, and the regular gloves.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend.

Sunday

Hi, Garance, Joan, Josie & Linny.

Garance, thanks for starting us out this week. Today I did disc # 16m "Chest, Shoulders & Triceps. I had 45 pounds on the barbell and had the weighted gloves on which add 2 pounds to it. But you are right, I will probably not be able to put any more weight on the bar, and lift it to my thighs and then up for chest work. I will probably get my regular bench back out and start to use the rack/bars on that for both chest and legs.

We planted and weeded today, got the zinnias in the ground, finally.

Have a great holiday!

don't mean to sound dumb, but what is penta? is it 50? if so, HELLO! how are the rest of ya'll? i am gonna start STS again on june 15. don't ya'll just love it??? i have been doing 4-day split this last week. do ya'll find you have a few more aches and pains doing STS? even though i love it, i do feel it. well, actually, i feel all of cathe's workouts. someitmes my old feet and bones hurt after her workouts, but i figure i may as well hurt from working out rather than hurting from being fat and out of shape, LOL!
so, what are ya'lls plans for the summer?

Happy Memorial Day!

Good Morning,

Happy Memorial Day to all!

I feel like I have been up for days, already did an I-Tread, went to the market, laundry, etc. We are having a cookout at my brother's later this afternoon so I went and bought a bow-tie pasta salad and a fruit salad...I know, I know, easy things to make but I am not in the mood to cook, too lazy I guess.

Garance, I never mentioned that I got that book you recommended, The Help, and I have not been able to put it down! It is one of the best ones I have read in a while. I got it Saturday morning and am almost done.

Cathy, yes Penta means fifty, we are a bunch of over 50 and over 60, that is the "beyond"...3 of us are currently doing STS, I am in Meso cycle 2 and am really liking it a lot. I don't find that I have more DOMS than other Cathe weight work, but find the style is more to my liking. Feel free to drop in and let us know what is up with you and working out etc.

Hi to Josie, Linny & Joan...

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan and welcome Cathy--

This morning I did Step Blast (approx. 60 min.).

Deb, I am not surprised that you can't put The Help down. My friend read it over a weekend, and now I have loaned it to someone else who loves it, too. I definitely think it's good enough to do in a Literature by Women course. Good for you on the weights!!

I made a tortellini salad this morning for a potluck later this afternoon--it's in the Joy of Cooking. Artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, tomatoes, lots of torn basil, mozzarella balls. A few drops of red wine vinegar. It's very good.

Cathy, you are right about the 50s in the penta, but I also sometimes think it sounds like we are a bunch of vegetarians working in the Pentagon who also do Cathe. Women warriors!

Enjoy the rest of the holiday!!

LOL! good to find women my age. does anyone know how old cathe is? she is bionic as far as i'm concerned. i am 54 and can do her, but sometimes my body does HURT! i just loved STS! can't wait to start again.

where is everyone from? i'm in new braunfels, tx. and it is gettin' really hot already.:(

Hi Josie, Deb, Garance , Linny and Cathy,

What a busy weekend I've had. Hope everyone had a good Memorial weekend.

Sunday I planted all day and really got sunburned. I think I sweated off sunscreen in 5 minutes. Today was mostly rain. I carried 200 brick pavers from the car to the back of the yard. They were only 2lb each but I could only carry 4 at a time to get a good grip on them.

I did most of weights and plates abs and also disc 8.

Cathy, I am 58 from St Louis, Mo. I am also doing STS including Cathe's cardio suggestions.

I better get to bed. I have Elliot, my grandaughter, again tomorrow.

Joan

Tuesday!

Good Morning!

I just finished an I-Tread, whew...tough today.

Garance, I recommeded the book to my niece and SIL who love to read, and called my MIL last night in California to see if she had read it. She is an avid reader, even with her sight problems. She has a machine that she puts the book in to magnify the print. I thought she would like it as she was born in Louisianna in 1923. She had not read it and said she would love to, so I ordered the large print one for her on Amazon. Of course they are back ordered. BTW, are you liking the Olay stuff? I am back to our favorite Murad Essential C. I found using that, then the foundation without any moisturizer works the best. I figure all the foundation has SPF anyway.

Cathy, Welcome! I am from Buffalo NY, am 56. I think Cathe is around 42 or 43? Not sure, but way younger than me! It just started to warm up here. We had a late spring.

Joan, are you putting down those Unilock type bricks for a walkway or patio? We did that in our yard at one time and I remember having to carry them to the car at the place we bought them, then unload them to the yard. That will count as your workout for sure!

Waving Hi to Linny& Josie!

Hi Ladies,

I had a great time in New York. I ate and drank too much, but it was fun. I came back to drama at work and meetings, so I did not have time to post last week.

I had a small going away party on Saturday for my DS. He is going on deployment again, this is his 4th one in the 8 years that he has been in the NAVY.

I will be working out at home tonight, I don't know what I will be doing yet. My walking partner is going to join the trainer which is to expensinve for me. He did not tell me anything new.

I will come back later.

Josie

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie (welcome back!), Joan, and Cathy--

I did disk 37 this morning (63 min.) for legs. Did not want to do the plyometric disk 26. Very basic: 32 squats, 32 deadlifts, 32 front squats, and 32 static lunges for each leg (4 sets of 8). 3 minute rests between sets. I can only get 50 lbs over my head, so squats and lunges were at 50 lbs. and I did 61 lbs for deadlifts. I am definitely going to use my 20 % discount for the weighted vest, weighted gloves and regular weight gloves. I am waiting for the 28th to put it on the credit card.

Deb, I am so glad you loved the book as much as I did, and how sweet of you to buy the large print for your MIL. How did you like the book on the Ames, Iowa women? I saw that it was on the bestseller list. I am doing the same thing with the essential-C and that new foundation. The essential-C just makes the foundation go on so nicely, and I love the two together.

Cathy, I am 62 and live in Williamstown, MA and last night it went down to 33 degrees. DH had to cover all of his vegetable plants. I won't be putting my zinnias and other annuals in until next week. I am pretty certain Cathe is 42 and her birthday is in July. I once figured out that she had her two boys at the same ages I had mine (35 and 37) and that she was 20 years younger than I. I have been doing Cathe since my early 40s, and have definitely had to cut down on the impact. KNEES are my major issue. But I love her choreography on the step and have tried to keep up with her on weights. I own everything she ever did.

Josie--you have to tell us a little about what you did in NYC.

Joan, watch the sunburn. DH is out in the sun all day and uses a 50 SPF at all times. He used to burn as a child and had a melanoma in his late teens. Slather it on, girl!!

Hi to Linny!

Hump Day!

Good Morning,

Today I did disc 17 Legs. I can actually do the paper plate ones in this meso cycle! It is raining here right now, I don;t like it but we need it badly.

Josie, glad to hear you had a good time in NY. What did you do? Tell your son I said Thank You.

Garance, I really like the weighted gloves now. I put them on in the beginning and just leave them on, adding the weight to my sheet as appropriate. It's tough doing the warm up with the gloves on though..:p.
I have not finished the Ames book yet. It is one that you read a couple of chapters, then put it down.

Hi to Linny, Joan & Cathy!

Good morning all,

Yesterday was a busy day. I took Elliot to her mother's classroom for the next to the last day of school party. I also had her later because dil went to get her hair cut. Good news I won't have her Thursday or Friday. I thought dil worked the whole week . Now no excuses about working out.

Garance I hate to be out in the sun at all. I hate summer. For some reason I get much more tired in summer with total lack of ambition. I would love it to stay spring and fall year round. I'm usually always good about sunscreen this is the first time in years that I burned. I need to make an appointment to have moles looked at though because I wore no sunscreen growing up. I don't even know if they made it then.
Hope mammogram results are good.

No wo Tuesday. Monday's postponed to Tuesday official weigh in 167lbs.
I won't be happy until I get back to the 164 I was in January.

Josie Glad you enjoyed vacation.

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, Joan, and Cathy--

This morning I did Kimberly Spreen's Cardio Combat Surge (70 min.).

Deb, I had the same experience with the paper plate exercises--found them very hard in meso 1, but progressively easier, lower on meso 2. I am ordering all of my stuff tomorrow.

Joan, my DH burned a lot when he was little and it was when they used to say (stupidly!!), "oh, you have to burn first and then you will get tan and everything will be okay." He has a full body check once a year because of that melanoma. I started using sunscreen when it would still stain your clothing because I had this zany (but probably in retrospect, smart) boyfriend who started me on it in my 20s. I never burned when I was younger, though. I read somewhere that sunbathing produces melatonin, which explains why I sleep so well when we go to the Jersey shore. Maybe that's why you feel lazy in the summer.

DH made dinner yesterday, and it was really good. He found this recipe in the newspaper from a cookbook called "A Man, a Can, and a Plan." He stood up a whole chicken stuffed with a can of beer (kind of obscene!), slathered it with Tandoori spices, and roasted it on indirect heat for an hour on the grill. It was really delicious. He was very proud of himself. I made the rest--a raita, basmati rice, and a salad with lots of lettuce from our garden.

Cold and rainy here today--a good day for working at my desk!

Hi to Linny, Josie, and Cathy!

Hi Ladies,

I just got back from my lunch workout. I watched the LA Marathon on Monday and wanted to start running again. I will stick to the track for now, I'm still afraid of the sidewalks.

New York was fund and other than the eating and drinking. We went ot see the Yankees play the Twins at the new stadium and ate all kinds of yummy junk food and washed it down with a couple of beers. We also went to see Jersey Boys It was great. The whole audience was singing along through out the whole show. We also went to the Village to listen to jazz at several night clubs. We also went to a place called the Garage where they were playing the blues. The food there was amazing and Garance, they made a mean Manhattan. I did not get to shop as much as I wanted because my DH is not very patient. I told him that I would wait to shop when I got home so that I could go with my DD.

Deb, Thank you very much for thanking my DS. He left this morning at 5:30 AM. I miss him already.

Joan, I still have to loose 20 pounds. Being on vacation did not help.

Hi Linny & Cathy.

Josie

Hi Ladies:
Had busy weekend than back to very busy work:( Been working late and getting the kitchen organized.Counters came in on friday, beautiful.DH put new kitchen door in today. We are trying to find a tile for kitchen floor. Most of the ones I like are ceramic but DH wants porcelin. He says if it gets chipped it shows up less.
Deb:I've been using the Murad Essential C too.I love the orange smell. Have been using Covergirl/Olay foundation which I liked in the beginning. But now I noticed my wrinkles more with application. I'm still doing Atkins and have lost 11 pds so far.I can't wait till I'm in the 150's again.
Garance:That book, The Help, is getting all kinds of good raves. I went on Amazon.com and it came up on my books to read. Sounds like you are doing great with STS.
Josie:Sounds like great time in NY.Lucky you.So sorry to hear that your son is deployed again. I'll pray that he will be safe.
JoanC:Enjoy having thurs and friday child-free. We are suppose to go to wedding saturday night.I hope I can stay away from wedding cake.
Have a great night~Linny~

Hi ladies,

Linny Great work on diet.:D I looked at Atkins again after you said you were trying it. I know I am not able to follow it long term, I always go off after a couple days. I do need to add more protein to my diet.

Deb My old pavers were like unilock. The new ones are just bricks that we will put in a basket weave pattern. Since they are both the same color gray and are separated by concrete and plantings I think it will be ok.

Josie I will be thinking good thoughts for your son. My baby is safe and sound in Portland OR but I haven't seen him in 17 months. I need to nag him to call me more often.

Garance I always read what you have cooked right before bed and you make me hungry. It's a good thing I don't like to eat late at night.

I did finish disc 9 Wednesday.

Joan

It;s Thursday!

Good Morning!

Only 2 days left until the weekend, can't wait. Today I did disc 18 from STS, Back & Biceps. I am actually starting to get the hang ( no pun intended) of those assisted pull ups with the band. Still can't complete the sets but getting more reps each time.

Joan, I am the opposite, I love the sun, although I try to not get burned by wearing sunscreen and a big hat when I work in the yard. How old is Elliott again? Did she enjoy seeing her Mom's class?

Garance, I thought the dreaded wall squats were behind me in Meso 1, but someone mentioned that they appear again in week 4 of Meso 2, ugh..those are awful. That chicken your DH made sounds delicious!

Josie, your NY trip sounds like it was fun! Yes, watch those sidewalks.. I would stay on the track too! How long will your DS be gone?

Linny, the kitchen sounds like it is coming along well. I never heard of porcelin for floors, is this new? You think the Covergirl is accenting wrinkles? I switch off between that and Almost Makeup by Clinique. Yes, get the book, it is wonderful! Not sure if I mentioned this, but I ordered the large print version from Amazon to have sent to my MIL. She was born in Louisanna about 1923 and I think she will really like it. Good work on the weight loss!

Have a great day!

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

This morning I did disk 27 for bis, tris, sh (67 min.). Boy does Cathe talk a lot on this one. She even goes beyond the rest times.

Deb, if I remember correctly there are also more of the dreaded pushups in the 4th week of meso 2. I was not happy to see their return, along with the wall squats. I am ordering the vest, the gloves, and the weight gloves today. I think this is just what I need for a bit of extra weight.

Linny, I love the essential-C and the Olay/Covergirl foundation. I have not heard of porcelain tiles either. Are they even more expensive than ceramic tiles? I have a laminate floor that looks like tiles, and I find it really easy to clean. I do have some gorgeous Italian tiles in back of my stove and under my cabinets. Good for you on the Atkins diet!

Joan, tonight I am making sweet and sour pork (our pork!), sticky rice, and another salad from the garden. I have several very good Chinese cookbooks.

Josie, I am sure that's really hard seeing your son off on a 4th deployment. How long will he be gone? N. Korea is now threatening to fire at S. Korean and US boats in what they believe to be their waters. I guess we are patrolling those waters in order to prevent them from shipping missiles to other unfriendly countries. The world just seems to get more dangerous every moment. I'm not sure I could handle the worry if either of my sons chose to join up.

Another grey, cool day.

Good evening,

Posting before doing RS but I promise to do it as soon as I am done.

Elliot is 2 1/2 and she fit right into the class. The kids are 4-5 year olds in the special school district. Elliot and the 5 year old followed directions the best. She kept saying hi mommy and a little boy said no you have to call her Miss Beth.

I think yesterday was the most calories I have burned in a day and that was from 7 hours of house cleaning. It was my spring housecleaning. I'll need to find something else active to do for an extended period each day.
I've done the 3 hours on the treadmill and that gets real old. I don't think I would do more than one hour of weights.

We had misting all day with a ton of rain last night. I hope it dries out soon. The rivers are starting to flood.

Finally Friday!

Good Morning,

No workout this morning:confused:..one of the dogs woke us up at 3:00, and I had a hard time getting back to sleep. I turned the alarm off. It was a cardio day so I am not too concerned. I could always fit one in tomorrow, although I like my rest day being Saturday. It has been raining off and on here since yesterday, the plants and grass really need it.

Anyone have any exciting plans for the weekend?

Garance, I wish I lived closer to you, I would love to try some of your wonderful menus! Also, the home grown beef, chicken etc. :D

Joan, yes house cleaning is supposed to be good exercise! I hate it though. Don't you love when kids just tell it , like the one did about "Miss Beth"? Too cute!
