Pentagenarians and Beyond W/B 4/17

Good evening ladies!

This morning was SB Upper Body 7 I think it is called followed up with her recent Bis and Tris target. Both high rep workouts and I felt a very nice burn. Lunch was 21d Barre Legs and tonight Bob and I took both Chester and Nilla. My little Nilla is just so darn cute. Amazing how spry she is considering her age.

Deb...yes as Diane Sue mentioned Greg Twombly produces Cathe's workouts. You see his name in the credits. He has been around forever! Every hotel we go to I am always checking for bed bugs. Just the thought of them makes me quiver. Chester is doing very well. He has really slowed down but seems to be no limping at all. Our walks are about 20 to 25 minutes. Long gone are the 4 to 5 mile walks. :(

Judy...that is great to get back into running. I remember you saying you used to run a lot. I would love to live near a bike path. We have one a few towns over. To much effort for me to pack my bike up! I am loving SB's Spring Challenge. I remember liking it last year too and pretty much finished the rotation. Not sure how long this one goes but I am in week 3. I am finding her workouts to be very enjoyable in the morning.

Lynda... There is a larger woman that is always in the back to our left. I think her name is Michelle. She is amazing and such an inspiration to me. I have watched her from day one and have seen some changes in her physique and stamina from the first workout to now. That is a different Greg you are thinking of. I think when they filmed Xtrain he was really sick with the flu or something.

Diane Sue....I have done the Road Trip Kickboxing a few times. Yes there is a lady on a rebounder! Cathe even comments about it. Warm milk in cereal does not sound pleasant. How long were you in England?

Hi to Josie and Valerie!

Lorie, I used to hate mountain climbers but I really do not mind them that much. Jacks are okay sometimes, it depends on what they are doing with the arms and how long. I hate the flying jacks. They hurt my knees when I land. Sometimes I just do straight up jumps instead. When Cathe first came out with the Low Impact series I felt that to make up for the lack of impact we were overworking the shoulders with the added weights. It started causing me issues. I notice Cathe was not as heavy on the shoulder stuff when we got to Ripped With Hiit low impact. I noticed Cathe said something about getting up there with the lady on the rebounder. I kept thinking I had done that one before but then I remember when they had the road trip live the while everyone was there for the first time I watched and did some of it.
I was in England for 3 years. My Dad was in the Air Force and we went when I was 7 and returned when I was 10.

Judy, I had no idea that they made a combo flea tick and heartworm medicine. My dogs always liked the Heartgard, it was like I was giving them a treat. There was another brand that we had tried that was hard chewables and I always had to pry their mouths open and make them swallow it so it was a welcome change.

We are back from another mt bike. we started out actually in the mountains and rode up a trail we've used before. too much snow left though so after walking thru some patches, we hoped the south exposure melted it early, but no. still an hour and a half with some tough uphills. drove to another spot and rode a less steep road to the same thing, the snowline. I have a pic of me lying on the ground in the sun so my project is to figure out how to get it off the phone and up here. probably about 8 miles total.

Two totally different roles for sarah lancashire.... but both good. I'm quite sure it's the same writer on both series. we have watched so many british series now that I probably should check to be sure. anyway, people do some stupid slightly improbable things in Halifax, ... but it's funny without being too crude and clever. we're watching one called Broadchurch now that we'd started a long time ago and didn't finish although I don't remember why. maybe we went on vacation and forgot to pick it up again, or maybe it got lost switching from Hulu to Netflix. . This one is also very good. I didn't look at who the writer is. Scott and Bailey was another good one. I don't understand how the brits can be so good at this kind of series and hollywood so generally awful.
This is Rory the dashboard kitty, right? saw him and he is so darling!

In general, fleas, ticks, bedbugs, lice are all developing resistance to what has been used to kill or deter them in the past. Natural selection at work! not good news though, like so many bacteria developing antibiotic resistance. I've read so many people say that the products for head lice don't work anymore. bedbugs the same way.....

Deb, I got a book to help me with the iphone. just got it yesterday. I think I have the basics Ok but I want to be more "expert" than I will be on my own. I usually let DH handle the TV ......... so I don't have to! we are getting a new antenna. not sure why but decided this might help with local stations. I have to say I didn't pay much attention to the streaming process as DH and his cousin did most of it. that is it though, we have appleTV, an ipad, iphone, and 2 PC's, TV antenna, Netflix, and Outlook express. I'm quite sure I don't understand all the nuances.

I was thinking cats didn't get heartworm... that it was limited to dogs. will have to look that up. I think my brothers dog has been treated for heartworm but he lives in the Midwest. I don't think heartworm is a factor in the northwest for animals at this time so maybe I just misunderstood.

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did Muscle Max. That is an old favorite of mine, along with Muscle Endurance. One of my Facebook groups is doing a month of the Hardcore Series workouts. It's kind of loose, no set workouts, so I thought I would do Muscle Max & High Step Challenge this week and Gym Styles next week. Since I don't really do step workouts, I'll be doing Spinervals or outdoor cardio instead and only doing the strength workouts in the series.

Deb-I saw some people talking about Greg's post on Facebook. I can't wait to see what new dvds or product is coming out. This should be exciting!

Lynda-I can tell I haven't been doing enough Live workouts. I don't know any of the people yet. I haven't done the Live workouts consistently enough to start to recognize anyone but Cathe.. I guess I need to get caught up :)

Lori-great workouts! I definitely need to rethink SB streaming. I still get the emails about her new workouts and challenges. I think I will sign up again. I'm glad that Chester is doing well. I bet he and Nilla look cute when you take them for walks together.

Diane Sue- I like regular jumping jacks but not the variations. I usually stay with regular ones when they are doing the other ones. I don't really care for mountain climbers either.

Valerie-I didn't know that cats could get heart worm until we started going to the cat only vet with Chino & Shadow. Our old vet never mentioned it for Tiger & Misty. I think this may be something they just started doing recently. Here's something I found about it:

https://www.heartwormsociety.org/heartworms-in-cats

While we are on the subject of cats, I used the furminator on Chino today and this is how much fur I got off of him. He has a thick undercoat.

Good morning,

A good day yesterday, the vet appointment was fine, and we had a nice time at the college with the students. They loved Kylee....she was such a good girl with them all petting her etc. They all said that they missed their dogs and could not wait to go home.

Lynda, thanks for the description of that Live workout, it sounds like a good one. I look at the exercisers in the gym during the Live workouts, recognize them as "regulars" but have not connected a name to a face. I do notice that they use pretty heavy weights, both db's and bb's. I don';t think the Greg that is mentioned producing the DVD's is the same one that was in her past series...this is a guy that works behind the scenes, he also produces KCM's workouts. She is always gushing about how great Greg is to work with.

Diane Sue, so sorry, that was awful about your Dad....my brother was in a pub in London, mistakenly said he was from the US....and they started harassing him etc. That is when his son-in-law reminded him to say he was Canadian! For some reason, some of them really hate US people, even tourists.

Lori, it's good that you are keeping Chester's walks to what he can do safely...he doesn't know the difference in mileage and has to be so happy just to be out with "his people" :). Good job on the SB challenge!

Valerie, sounds like a great ride! Yes, get the pic posted here! :). Yes, cats here do get treated for heartworm as well....I saw a poster at the vet yesterday that has a soft treat like thing that has flea, tick, and heartworm med all in one. It is pretty prevalent here....my friends son adopted a young dog from a local shelter, and he didn;t realize they had not done anything about heartworm, and by the time they were attached to it, they had to have it treated, very long process and very expensive.

Judy, that sounds like a good rotation...all the "oldies but goodies" :). As for jumping jacks, I do the low impact ones no matter what Cathe and others are doing. Way too much impact, especially for those workouts where she does a "gazillion" of them. LOL Wow, that is a lot of fur from one cat. We have the Furminator, too....it takes out the undercoat, which I guess is what cats shed?

Hi Josie,

Today is the day we load the truck for the upcoming agility trial this weekend....then tomorrow is set up at the arena, a busy "ALL DOG" weekend coming up.

Take care,

I did some looking and it does seem like cats get heartworm too... where it is endemic. it sounds like mosquito transfer and maybe we don't have that mosquito here? I I have had trouble getting the pages to open about heartworm. judy, thanks for the link. wow between zika and other mosquito born illnesses, we humans and our pets must take notice as warming temps might spread the range of the problem insects.

Deb, I keep having email address drop off my PC. not all of them, but my niece. I keep adding her back in and off it goes again. I didn't look at the phone but she was on it with her phone and a yahoo email address. this morning I needed to contact her, and sure enough, it was off my pc again. I can't understand what it is about her. there are plenty of people I almost never connect with and they stay in place.
we're doing a road ride today on the local trail. yesterday was too much driving and didn't want to do it again today.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did both Sweat workouts (47:13).

Diane Sue, that is awful about your father. Reminds me of what happened to Natasha Richardson. A simple fall that triggers an avalanche of problems leading to death. I think you are right about the LIS--a lot of metabolic weight work to compensate for the low impact. But I loved that series and was just so pleased to have some low impact cardio from Cathe. Aah yes, Greg Twombly. He must do a lot of recording for everyone.

Lori, I will try to look for Michelle. If the other Greg who was in the Xtrain series was sick, I don't understand why he would be on a dvd at all. Who wants to work out with a sick person??

It sounds like you and Kylee had a busy day yesterday, Deb. I have always had good experiences with the British when I have been working there at the British Library or gone to conferences at Cambridge and Oxford. The French, however, can be downright nasty IMO. My older son, who speaks French, was in Paris last summer and asked them what they would recommend to his traveling companion from the menu, and they urged something that turned out to be tripe. She gagged just looking at it. I think they knew it was not something an American would like.

Valerie, yes, Sarah Lancashire plays such different characters and does it so well. Broadchurch was redone in an American series last year--same actor, but other American actors in the other roles. It was pretty good, but I didn't want to see it again.

Judy, the furminator does wonders for Max's coat, whites so heavy. Kim also has to take a scissors to his hind area because he gets so tangled up with burrs, branches. He looks like a puppy after a good trim.

Hi to Josie!

Today I wanted lower body and am still working through Cathe live workouts for a bit. I have done pretty much all of the lower body workouts that do not include upper. I did Hiit it Lift it Legs live, 43 minutes, 246 calories. I used the rebounder for a lot of the impact. I was surprised that this was pretty high rep for the weight work. I started out loaded up with heavier weights and ended up dropping down. Since this was not long and a lot of cardio I did live bun burner barre and ball, ball and stretch segments, 13 minutes, 41 calories. I then did Kelly Coffey Slim Sculpting Core Ab skettlebell mix stopping at the pullover sit up move, 24 minutes, 94 calories. At the end I did Chalean Extreme recharge for a stretch. Total time minus stretch was 80 minutes, 381 calories.

Good afternoon ladies!

This morning was SB Total Body Classic Barre. Followed it up with Cathe's 100 rep hip thrusts and then Icy Core 2. This afternoon was an old cathe workout blender upper body band workout I madeup a while back.

Diane Sue...I have only been to London and that was 20 years ago. I loved it! I think Cathe still does a ton of shoulder work!

Valerie...would love to see the picture!!!! Great idea to get a book to help with your phone. I have seen Iphone magazines but never purchased. I love my phone but still so much I do no know.

Judy....your cat fur made me laugh! Between all our 4 animals we have fur everywhere! We vacuum frequently but at times it seems like a losing battle. SB has been posting some really good workouts. I like her site equally as much as Cathe Live. The dogs do look cute. Chester is so big and Nilla is so tiny. People driving by are always smiling at us.

Deb...awww sweet Kylee. I agree some of the live crew really use some heavy weights. I look at them and feel like a wimp sometimes. Loading the truck sounds like a great workout!

Lynda...yeah I do not know why he stayed on if he was so sick. I guess come hell or high water he wanted to be that video! That is great your son speaks French. I really need to continue with my Spanish lessons. Just hard finding the time. I reallly like doing both the sweat workouts together. Makes a great workout.

Hi to Josie!!!!

Lori, I had noticed that some of the women have become really good at keeping up with Cathe and some even picking up heavier weights than in earlier workouts. I would imagine it would take time getting used to it. I think Cathe said something, like not all of them do the dvd workouts?

Judy, that ferminator really works well. My daughter used to use one on her golden retriever that was a fluffy hairball. Gertie shed more than our other dog did. The Dane we used to have had an undercoat. I never thought about a shorthaired dog having an undercoat. I would brush her every morning and every evening outside during warm weather and the hair would just keep coming off. She did have skin issues too though. I use the Furminator shampoo for shedding at the start of the season. It seems a little like it dries the dogs skin or something because Gertie seems itchy and her coat is not as glossy as usual. It seems like if the cats are kept inside they would not need the meds? I know not everyone keeps them inside. My mother used to put my Siamese cat outside and I would let her in my bedroom window.

Valerie, I am generally the one troubleshooting all of those gadgets and looking stuff up to figure them out. It is not pleasant. Then sometimes I will accidentally happen on to the trick to get it to work and I think I should have written it down for reference. The stuff is just not always compatible with each other without more gadgets to make it work. I lose addresses and phone numbers off my e mail and my phones all of the time and then sometimes I get extra copies of them. Also I will update everything with the correct latest information and come back and the old stuff is there. I don't use the cloud so I do not know how it happens but it really annoys me. I would love to see a picture from your ride.

Lynda, that was a malicious move with the tripe. I worked in an authentic Mexican restaurant that made their own tortillas in the mornings and I helped mash and season the refried beans and make the salsa. They made menudo and some people would order it and I bet they had no idea what was in it. I had a few ask and when I would explain it had tripe in it (even had some ask what that was) they would forgo the menudo. I really do like the Low Impact series. I just had to learn to work with premixes and pay close attention to which workouts I did back to back. Cathe has some good rotations incorporating LIS with other series.

Deb, I could see how saying you are Canadian would work. I don't see my husband or could never imagine my Dad having did it. In fact my Dad wanted to roll the window down and say something but my Mother made him stop. I think they all have no real concept of what type of people we are. They seem to think we are all wealthy and think highly of ourselves. I know all of them are not like that though. My husband has been to countries where they loved Americans . I believe Kosovo was one.

A lot of older people start getting TIA's.... transient ischemic attacks. most likely cause is small or temporary blockages of tiny blood vessels in the brain from tiny clots or spasms. they get put on anticoagulants so the "mini blockages" don't develop into something major, like a big clot blocking a vital pathway. unfortunately, if they have an injury.... like falling and hitting their head, they are at risk for bleeding. so it's hard to keep the tendency to form clots balanced against the increased risk of bleeding. either direction... too much or too little... can cause a fatal event. my mother has had a lot of TIA's , so she's anticoagulated. supposed to get checked regularly to make sure she is in an acceptable range but like most old people, I don't think it happens as often as it should.

Tripe..that is a dirty trick! anyone looking at tripe would probably not want to eat it. nasty looking stuff. I don't know what's in all menudo by the way, but best find out.

My mother and sister never let their cats outside so tend not to use any protection. you can get exposed even on a trip to a veterinary office, something they seldom do either. the thing is, they have dogs coming and going too, so if the dog goes in and out, the cats can still get fleas. I used to always keep my dog flea collar updated, but we still got fleas in the house. once of twice a year we'd have to get flea bombs and do the whole house. I was so happy to see the newer products arrive because they worked so much better for me. the fleas would immediately jump off my dog and latch onto me!

when I was riding this morning, 32 miles on the trail, I remembered the writer for Halifax and Happy Valley . Sally Wainwright. I am going to look her up and see if she has written other series.

ETA Sally wainwright also wrote scott & bailey, another I strongly recommend.

Hi Everyone,

I spent most of the day catching up on house work, laundry, and grocery shopping. I may take a rest day from training today, or I might do something short later tonight.

Deb-I'm glad the vet appointment went well. Kylie sounds like a sweet dog. Yes, it's the undercoat that cats shed. I need to brush Chino more often.

Valerie-yes, the vet told us they get heart worm from mosquitoes. Our cats are indoors 100%, so I thought we wouldn't need to treat them, but the vet said we needed to whether the cats are indoors or out. At first I was a little resistant to the idea because it seemed like the vet was so determined to sell us this product that I almost felt like it might be a scam. I've asked people on the cat forum about it and have gotten mixed opinions. Some people don't think it's necessary and some are concerned about long term effects that the product might have. There are a lot of mosquitoes around here so I've decided it's probably best to go ahead and do it.

Lynda-Chino looks better after being brushed yesterday. He probably feels better too after getting rid of all that fur. I agree about not wanting to work out with a sick person. That was one of my biggest pet peeves when I regularly went to the gym. There was always someone who would come in no matter how sick they were and spread germs all over. At the Golds Gym I went to it got to the point that they put signs up telling people not to come to the gym if they have flu symptoms.

Lori-we vacuum all the time too but I've given up trying to get rid of all the fur. I went ahead and signed up for a year of SB. She does have some great workouts and they are so easy to fit in before or after other workouts.

Diane Sue-We've always kept our cats inside. I know some people do let them go in and out, but I would be afraid of them getting hurt. Chino and Shadow have never been outside at all, except for when we take them to the vet. They do love to look out the window and watch the birds but they don't try to get outside. Our other cat, Tiger, was a stray who had lived outside before we took him in. He was always wanting to go out so we had to be very careful anytime we opened the door so he wouldn't get out.

Hi to Josie!

Judy

This photo came up in my Facebook memories today. Misty & Tiger, our two cats that passed away in 2013.

Valerie, I don't think my Dad had his levels checked often. My brother said he thought my Dad forgot when he took his meds and sometimes took too much. Also, when I was researching glucosamine chondroitin recently I discovered that it can be a blood thinner. He took that too because it helped his joints. Menudo is a Mexican soup that is made out of tripe with lots of spices. I hadn't thought about having dogs too or going to the vet. My Dad had cats that he loved. They would come in and out when they wanted. They lived in a small town. One of the neighbors killed his cat. My Dad was broken hearted. It makes me mad that someone would do that. The guy knew my Dad and could have came and talked to him if the cat bothered him. After that my niece bought him a stray kitten that needed nursed to health. He quit letting them out and would get so upset if he couldn't find one of them.

Judy, I think when pets spend most of their time inside with the owners they become much better pets. My husband and I had one cat and his name was bobo. My husband always said bobo thought he was a dog. My husband would make up paper balls and toss them and bobo would fetch and bring them back. He was a nice cat. Your cats look all pampered and comfortable in that picture. You lost both the same year? That had to be tough.

Lynda, I wish the Nexgard worked for Gertie because I liked not having the gooey stuff on her shoulders. I took it back today and they exchanged it for a 6 month pack of Frontline and gave me two free doses and a credit for the cost difference. I still have a bit of a hard time understanding the concept of it being in the bloodstream but not bothering the organs. I would never have thought about it till I looked up the side effects and how it works. I imagine there is some of the stuff absorbed through skin too. But, the consequences of not using something can be bad. They had another one called comfort that was just for fleas. I really think I would rather cover both because I know there are ticks around my daughter's land and we will be taking Gertie with us when we go do our family campout and cabin stay vacation this summer. Right now I have already seen tons of gnats and some mosquitos since it is warming up and has been raining.

Lori, when we lived in England we lived in Suffolk England, near the North Sea. We went to see lots of castles and museums and picnicked in the country. My parents took me to Madame Tussauds wax museum. We had a school field trip to London and saw the crown jewels and Buckingham Palace. The changing of the guard. Somewhere I remember the Yeomen. Lots of interesting things.

Good morning,

Well the dog club meeting went well, the election ended up the way we wanted it to go so that is a good thing. We'll see how the new slate of officers handles things this coming year. Hopefully it will not be so contentious. The equipment is loaded on the truck and ready to go to the arena.

Valerie, I don't have the "contact drop off" problem, but I do have an annoying one that no Tech can seem to fix. I can't get texts from my friend, it happened all of a sudden. We used to text back and forth, then one day she called and asked me why I didn't respond to her text. I never got it. She gets mine, but I don't get hers. She is the only person this happens with. The Straight Talk tech person and one from AT&T cannot figure it out. Weird. Thanks for the recommendations, I have written down and will be on a mission to find them. :)

Lynda, yes, it seems that once an elderly person falls, things go down hill from there. That is what happened with my uncle and he is now in full skilled nursing. He was in assisted living. I guess that Greg that was on the DVD's must have felt he needed to continue, since there he was through the rehearsals and everything, and maybe Cathe did not have someone to jump in? I didn't really notice him that much. That is awful what they did to your son's companion with the tripe...ugh....I can imagine what Max has on his long fur, with all the running around he does.

Diane Sue, love KCM...I may have to pull out her workouts soon. I agree on the troubleshooting for tech gadgets! I have spent hours on issues like my printer not printing unless I turn it off and then on again...and all of a sudden I come to a blog post and there is the solution!

Lori. I picture you walking Nilla in a kid's umbrella stroller, her looking out like a little princess. :).

Judy, the pics of Misty & Tiger, so sweet, we miss our pets, their lives are too short, but they give us so much in such short time. It's the same in the "dog world" regarding heartworm meds, there are people we know ( a Wire Fox Terrier breeder friend is one of them) that calls the Heartworm pill "poison" for dogs. I just know that if they get it, it's horrible to treat and takes about 4 months and is not easy on the dog or the pocketbook. I will err on the side of using the med, since as far as I know, none of my dogs have had any bad reaction to it.

Hi Josie!

Today is all about setting up at the arena....

Take care,

Our kitties have all been rescue cats. all were used to "outside". it makes me nervous sometimes, but it was an endless thankless battle to keep them in. we've had good luck making them very comfortable inside so they don't argue about being inside at night. we live on 5 acres so no neighbors that close. none of the kitties wandered and know the routine. come to the deck late afternoon. the deck is about 25 feet up so it's a safe place for them to sleep during the day. I know there is still some risk but I live with it. it does mean they need flea protection from March to late October. more later.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Ice Metabolic (48 min.). I was going to do the Giant Sets, but at the last minute changed my mind. Meanwhile, my left shoulder is feeling a bit sore. Maybe too much shoulder work this week??

Diane Sue, thanks for the info on menudo. I thought it was the name of a Latino boys' singing group! That was the problem with the stuff we used to put on Max's shoulders and neck--greasy, and we think he would rub most of it off by rolling in the dirt. Why did the neighbor kill your dad's cat? Was it going after birds or something?

Deb, Natasha Richardson was not old--in her 40s, I think. She fell while she was learning to ski and hit her head (no helmet) and at first she seemed okay. Later she fell into a coma and never came out of it. Her husband Liam Neeson decided to pull her off life support because she was brain dead. I'm happy for you that those dog meetings may become less annoying with new officers. Are Kylee and Keegan in the agility trials? You will have to tell us how they do.

Valerie, thanks for the information on season 3 of Happy Valley. She really is a good writer and I am enjoying Last Tango in Halifax. I will have to check out that other series as well.

Judy, I remember those two kitties and how much you loved them. Didn't you also have a rescue cat that died very quickly? I remember you struggling with some rare disease and how helpless you felt at the time.

Lori, I am enjoying this weather so much. Time for after dinner walks with Max pretty soon, when the sunlight is even longer.

Hi to Josie!

Lynda-yes, we adopted a kitten, Echo, shortly after Misty died. Echo ended up having FIP and we lost her at 9 months old.

since you've liked both these series, I think you'll like Scott and Bailey too. many of the same actresses appear in different series.

I looked up menudo, sure I'd never eat it. I've seen tripe in stores. it is gross looking!. I wonder if the music group was making a joke by naming themselves after tripe?
we did so much riding this week, I'm taking today off. need a break.
Judy, I remember the ordeal with Echo. so sad. Our little guy has been with us for about 12 years now so he's not that young anymore. He spends some time outside but is always easy to locate, and tends to sit with us when we're outside too. he is not a hunter so we don't have to worry about him going after birds... or mice for that matter. I never can understand how someone can not like cats. I like dogs too, but they are harder for us to take care of when we travel.
