Pentagenarians and Beyond: June 1, 2025

Good morning. we rode the regular trail this morning. the knee issue is increasingly a problem. we will hopefully get definite plans when his dentist calls back & hopefully sees him tomorrow to evaluate whats needed. dental work and an orthopedic procedure need to be separated in time. antibiotics are not sufficient. it could not be a much worse time to have a crown break.

I ended up taking a rest day yesterday and today I did an IMAX Mix and STS Disk 4.

Valerie that's really lousy timing for your husband to need a crown replaced. I hope that they can get it done quickly. It's too bad that the end up your drive home was so unpleasant. Is kitty opening things only in one direction or both. When I had cats that will open cupboards, I find they are either right or left pawed and tend to move things with only one side.

Diane Sue I hope that you are able to find a good path forward with exercise. Back issues can be hard to figure out the best things to do.

Hi Shannon, Carolyn and Judy.

Nothing much going on here. I am still resting. I did set on the spin bike and pedal sitting upright just to see if I could. Not much time, just checking. They have down for me to walk starting at 5 minutes at a time increasing time and distance. So far I only walk around the back yard while outside with the dog or just to get up and move some rather than just sit and lie down. The pup woke me up at 5 this morning whining because thunderstorms with lots of lightening was going on. He is okay if I am in the room with him.

Valerie, my mother and grandmother only lived to be in their 60's. Genetics does make a difference. Even before this procedure I had made turns and toe reaches differently. More of a hip hinge with knees bent so I could keep my back straight. One foot in front a bit to kneel down to pick something up or do something from the floor or trim a shrub. My neck and upper back issues have been on going and I do not like the pain that comes if I forget to be careful. Getting crowns done take some time. Hopefully things go quickly. I had a dentist appointment that I forgot about this week and changed it to a month later. It is just a regular one, but just not wanting to go.

Carolyn, nice work on Jane Adams Yoga this morning.

Cathy, good job on the I Max mix and STS disc 4.

Cathy Puss is ambidextrous!. he opens both right and left doors and cabinets. he didnt know how when he first got here. learned quickly. he opened some full size doors that didnt latch completely so he could check out our exercise room. its so nice to know DH has gotten attached to him too.

DH knew he broke "something". worse if it had been a tooth . half the crown sheared off. according to what i read, any dental procedure requires a wait before an orthopedic implant. 2-3 weeks is what I read. your mouth is populated by huge amounts of bacteria( all the brushing and mouthwash really dont do much for bacteria) any procedure will introduce them into the bloodstream. if he had already had the orthopedic implant, it would be several months before he could safely get a dental procedure done. i expect there are ways around this in an emergency but Dr google didnt tell me what. newly implanted devices are a site for bacteria to adhere.
We did not need this! in addition, our dentist just sold his practice. a new person in the last month we've never met. tomorrow will be interesting. hopefully this can get done faster than usual or else knee will need to be put off. temp crowns always fall off early. we have a call in to the surgery scheduling team too.

the women on mothers side lived long (miserable every minute,) to mid to late 90's. my mother and grandmother were 98. my fathers side was very few people and mid 70's.
diane sue congrats on doing a restrained bit on a bike. even if not a real workout, it makes you feel better, doesnt it? it feels so wrong doing nothing but a little sure helps. genetics matter but so do lifestyle choices. I've dodged the T2 diabetes, hypertension, ulcers, plenty of things that were part of my family's history.

We’ve got a lot going on so I haven’t been online much. I did work all day Saturday but was off yesterday. We did some shopping and worked on a few things at home. I did 30 minutes of rowing and a short core workout.

Carolyn-Nice job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga.

Valerie-I’m really sorry about your husband’s crown. That is bad timing with his knee surgery and having to see a new dentist. I hope everything goes well today.

Cathy-Nice job with your rest day and IMAX Mix and STS Disk 4.

Diane Sue-I’m glad you are doing well after the procedure. I hope you can find the right workouts for you and have less pain. it sounds like you are doing all the right things.

Hi to Shannon

Good morning, everyone. Friday was another rest day. I went grocery shopping after work and then took Sara for an extra walk. Saturday was a lovely day of yard work, and it made me happy. Sunday was yet another rest day, LOL. Maybe I am ready to get back on track now.

Cathy – Very cool about Derek’s celebrity status. Yes, I have feast or famine at work too. Just a few months ago, I was working overtime and even on a weekend or two. Now nothing. Ugh. I’m glad your mom was being positive last week and glad your dad got a break. Ah man, I sure do miss the Imax workouts. Those were awesome. But no step for me. See Diane’s section.

Carolyn – Good job with Cardio Step Jam and yoga. Yum, homemade bread! What kind did you make? Yes indeed, we do definitely need an occasional unplanned rest day or two or three!

Diane – It’s good to hear from you. I’ve been wondering how you are doing. I really hope the kyphoplasty helps you. You’ve been in pain for a long time! And best wishes as you recover and then find new ways to exercise. I am a writer and graphic designer for the fund raising department in a hospital. I produce case statements that our development officers use when they approach people for donations. Apparently there is not a big need at the moment. Oh, I really love step workouts too! But I can’t do them. My feet are weird and they can’t tolerate all the turning and pivoting anymore. I’ve even tried it using a mat for the “step.” No luck. So I’m stuck with low impact drill workouts.

Valerie – Your poor DH is getting hit by all sorts of crap! I hope he can get in soon to have his crown replaced, because it sounds like he really, really needs to get his poor knee fixed. I’m glad Puss made it okay while you were gone.

Judy – How’s the bathroom reno coming along? I’m glad you got off on Sunday. It was probably really nice to have one quiet day.

Today I did STS Disk 5 which is back and triceps. I'm going to the zoo on Tuesdays and I've decided I'm gioing to add going to my parents every week instead of every other till they close in October. My Dad lost his balance and fell the other night and of course when I offered the next day to go down and take him to urgent care because his head put a hole in the wall! He said no. I'll give another futile attempt to making him see reason. The ramp has been done for a few days and my Mom still refuses to use it. We'll see how long she holds out.

Valerie I hope they can start the process for you Dh's crown quickly. Puss is quite talented. Over the years, I've had some that could open sliding and bi-fold doors. Right now I only have one and thankfully he rarely does it, because he likes to do it in the middle of the night and just keep opening it a bit over and over and letting it slam shut. Which is not the thing you want to hear during the night!

Today I did KCM’s Cardio Fit Cardio Kickboxing, 22 minutes, 150 calories burned, average heart rate 131, and maximum heart rate 155. Then I did Step Boss Floor Stretch for 10 minutes.

Valerie, I hope that your husband can get the dental issue treated quickly. I’m sure that he doesn’t want to delay the orthopedic procedure any longer than necessary.

Cathy, great job with IMAX mix, STS disc 4, and STS disc 5. Your weekly plan with the zoo day and visiting your parents sounds like a good one. Hopefully your mother will accept the ramp soon.

Diane Sue, it’s good that you are resting and following doctors orders.

Judy, nice job with rowing and core work.

Shannon, good job with the rest days. Your body probably needed it. I make whole wheat bread from freshly milled wheat berries, usually buttermilk bread or oatmeal bread. These days I use the Zojirushi bread machine since I can’t spend a lot of time with the hands on part.

Have a great day everyone.

Today I did a 45-minute Peloton Power Zone ride. I’m planning on doing Yin Yoga or PT work tonight.

Shannon-We are finishing up the bathroom plans with the contractor this week. We made a couple of changes so he had to revise his quote. We sign the new contract tomorrow so I’m thinking they will start the work next week or the week after. It was very nice not working yesterday. Working both weekend days is too much for me and not something I want to make a habit of.

Cathy-Nice job with STS Disk 5. I’m sorry about your Dad’s fall. I hope he is ok. It sounds like a good idea to go see them every week.

Caroline-Nice job with KCM’s Cardio Fit Cardio Kickboxing.

Hi to Valerie & Diane Sue

I got a call from the Doctors office that did the procedure to set up a follow up appointment for next Tuesday. He wants me to bring the mri CD in with me again and wanted to know where I got my last bone density test done so he could get a look at it. It is a long drive there. Further than all of my other doctors.

Valerie, I do not like change when it comes to doctors. I had the same dentist for years, but when we moved, I finally gave in and went to one up the street that my husband started going to. It is right by us. I miss visiting with friends at the other. I watched the receptionist's children when they were small.
My mother was somewhat into nutrition. She always had a garden, and we ate lots of fresh vegetables. She kept bee pollen on the table that she swore kept them healthy. She was rather thin. She was just unlucky I guess and ended up with als which is a terrible disease. My grandmother had breast cancer and later had lung cancer and was not a smoker which was odd. Yes, if we take care of ourselves, we can overcome some of those genetic things.

Judy, nice job on getting in some rowing and a short core workout even with so much going on and work. Also the 45-minute Peloton Power Zone ride yesterday.

Shannon, I wish I could get out and do some yard work. I need weeding done, grass pulled out of planters and more pruning on the roses. I did go out and cut off some dead ones that I could get just standing without bending. Harvey insists I need to go out with him every time he does his business. He just went at first. I think it is a ploy to try to get me to play with him. I pulled out this ball that lights up and moves around with motion sensors. Gertie was never interested it. Harvey was running around in the house slapping it with his paws and catching it, so he got a little entertainment and play today.
That sounds like an interesting job. I hope you get some more work soon.
I do have to be careful with turns and pivots on the step workouts. When I had a torn miniscus once I realized how much it hurt my knee with those cross back and forth over the step lunges. I started substituting something else.

Cathy, good job on STS disc 5 back and biceps. I hope you can get your Dad to see reason. Mine fell on stairs and hit his head and had a brain bleed. He told his step son he was okay. He ended up in a coma.

Carolyn, nice work on KCM Cardio Fit Cardio Kickboxing and Step Boss Floor Step today.

Good morning. Yesterday I did my own weight workout, as usual. I also did LMR Functional Core Fusion. I like it. It’s kind of fun. I also did some stretching before bed. I was in my pajamas, so you know it wasn’t strenuous.

Cathy – Yeah, you really need to just drag your dad to the hospital to have his head checked. I have a story similar to Diane’s. My friend’s mother fell in Walmart and hit her head hard. She didn’t have it checked. They found her dead in her home the next day.

Carolyn – Your bread sounds fabulous. It makes me want to get back into it. I stopped a while back because I didn’t like spending so much time in the kitchen. My sister has a bread machine and loves it. Maybe I’ll get one!

Judy – Oh okay. For some reason I thought the renovation had already begun. I hope you enjoyed your evening yoga or PT work. It’s sort of nice to end the day with a gentle stretch of some kind.

Diane – I know driving a distance to see your doctor is tedious, but it sounds like he’s going to get you all fixed up. I sure hope so. Do you think you could ask one of your children or a neighbor to help you keep up with yard work for a while? I’m glad I’m near my parents and was able to help my mom when she crushed one of her vertebra last fall.

Hello to Valerie.

Today I did STS 2 Super Sets Total Body, 2 sets. My time was 51 minutes, 141 calories burned, average heart rate 105, and maximum heart rate 132.

Judy, great job with 45 minute Peloton Power Zone ride.

Diane Sue, the appointments that include a long drive are never fun. It sounds like your doctor is being very thorough.

Shannon, nice job with your own weight workout and LMR Functional Core Fusion. The bread machine is not totally hands off, but it certainly helps. Once I check a few times to make sure that the dough is not too wet or too dry I don’t usually do anything else. Sometimes I use the dough cycle and shape and bake in the oven.

Hello to Valerie and Cathy.

Last night I did 50 minutes of Peloton Yin Yoga. Today I went for a walk and did 40 minutes of Peloton Strength classes.

Diane Sue- I hope your follow up appointment goes well. I’m sorry about the long drive.

Shannon-Great job with your weight workout and LMR Functional Core Fusion.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2 Super Sets Total Body.

Went and walked at the zoo was there 2 hours. It was going to be hot, so I had a light sweatshirt over a T-shirt over a tank. Temp started at around 60, but by the time it hit 72 I was down to the tank because it was so nasty. Then I had to stop at TJ Max. I have a very minimalist wardrobe which in summer is shorts, T-shirts and tanks, but I have jury duty in a few weeks, and nothing I own works for that environment. I could have managed winter clothes, but not summer. My Mom has started using the ramp. They are still working on the getting out the door, and making the turn at the bottom, but it's far better than her using the stairs. She had an appointment with her doctor this afternoon, which according to her was not going to please her doctor, because my Mom is mad at her. Endless fun.

Diane Sue I'm the same way about doctors. My dentist is younger than I am, but I
I've been seeing him for quite awhile. My doctor for at least 23 years and my eye doctor for over 40. No interest in changing, but my doctor is over 80, and my eye doctor has to be close to 70. It's too bad you have to drive so far to yours. 2 of mine are 30-40 minutes away but I'm used to driving that distance to shop.

Judy I hope your walk today wasn't too hot!

Shannon at least my parents manufactured home has those really thin walls. Doesn't take much to put a hole in them and they give really easy. Much different than hitting drywall. And I've heard lots of stories about people hitting their heads, and that's why I offered to take him somewhere, but he's stubborn.

Carolyn they are only about 30 minutes from the zoo, it's mainly the drive back home from there that I'm not thrilled about. Wasn't too bad today.

we did a garden day today for half the day. DH usually does most of it and I do just weeding but i have to do more of it while walking is unpleasant for him. we will ride the trail tomorrow. maybe a bit more garden work but we decided to get some smaller home projects done while we cant do a lot. getting a fix on our shower head tomorrow, and estimates on pouring some concrete for the area by our front door on thursday.

Dh has appts with two specialists next week, a periodontist and an endodontist. that will decide what needs to be done and we will go from there. everything is on hold until we get that input.
we have had the problem with our medical people retiring. two dentists, ophthalmologist, several orthopedic people recently. most were not that old. we're trying for younger people so we dont have to find someone new every little while. DH retired when he was in his later 50's. medicine working for big corporations is challenging and you are not your own boss.... the bean counters run the show to a great degree now.

everything here takes time because traffic has gotten so awful. to see my cardiologist the drive might take 40 min or it might take 90 minutes. or longer. traffic rules everything here. Im used to driving long distances in traffic but not my first choice. diane sue, hope your appts go well and they come up with a good treatment plan. my whole family was obese. they ate a lot. no exercise. there was no cancer though, on either side. a couple of superficial skin cancers but nothing else. my fathers side were smokers but they died of heart related issues.

cathy I had jury duty a few years ago. nobody dressed up. jeans, sweaters, tennies or boots and coats or jacket because it was winter. nobody wore dresses or suits. it was very casual. it was cold in some of the rooms because its an old building and you just sit and sit. the parking was a long walk outside from the parking structure and freezing. its like the airport where you go thru xray screening. i had to hike back to my car because i aways have a swiss army knife in my purse and that triggered an alarm.

falls are dangerous in older people. they can get a brain bleed. especially if hes on anticoagulants, not uncommon in elderly people.. its probably not the only time he fell, just the only one he'll admit to because it made a hole in the wall.. everyone here is right...he should be checked and whatever caused the fall corrected if possible.

Puss is smart and learns quickly. he didnt know how to open doors when we got him but that changed quickly. he's working on opening the sliding screen door and even does some drawers.

Carolyn that bread sounds just wonderful! i used to make bread but never ground my own wheat. i did it the same, make dough in a machine but shape and bake by hand.

Today I decided to try Jessica Smith Youtube walk and talk since my sheet from the doctor said to walk starting 5 minutes at a time and gradually increase time and distance. I am guessing this is for people that don't work out or something. Any way this was for 19 minutes, 128 calories. I did not do some of the arm moves she added here and there. My granddaughter called this morning and offered to come help with some things, so she is going to come and vacuum up all of this dog hair. Harvey sheds like crazy and I brush him every day. She is my youngest granddaughter at 17 years old. She just got a car and is putting in for a job this summer. A surprise storm came through this afternoon, and sirens were going off for a tornado warning. It was odd because I was out with the dog and a breeze came up, but it was pretty calm and we had had a short shower earlier. Then suddenly the wind kicked up and rain so hard and blowing sideways so you could not see through it. The warning was last minute and when we turned on the weather it had already went over us.

Shannon, nice job on doing your own weight workout and LMR Core Fusion. I do stretches in my pajamas on those mornings that I am not going to do a full workout or sometimes before bed.

Carolyn, good job on STS 2 Supersets 2 sets.

Judy, nice work on the Peloton Yin Yoga last night and walk and Peloton Strength today.

Cathy, nice that you got a walk in at the zoo. I am glad you mother is using the ramp.

Valerie, I lost my first pulmonologist because during covid some retired and then the heart hospital made them all move out. The one that took his place had to move on to another job and sent me to the one I am currently going to that is near the heart hospital. I have an appointment at the heart hospital saturday for a heart CT. I am getting it done before I go in July for a chemical stress test. I never had one of those before. The other time I did a treadmill. Not sure why they changed it. That will be a long appointment because I have to drive so far they scheduled the stress test and the doctor visit in a 2 hour time slot.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I did ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast, Shannon’s special cardio-only version, LOL. It’s pretty easy to change the lower body segments to cardio. I really like this workout, both as Cathe designed it and with my changes.

Drat, we have a stray dog running around. I tried to get close to it yesterday, but it growled and slunk off. I think it’s more defensive than aggressive. It did sit down and seemed to listen when I talked to it from several feet away. It seems in pretty good health, but very dirty. I hate it when people dump dogs. It’s just so sad.

Carolyn – Nice work with STS2 Super Sets. You deserve a nice warm piece of fresh bread with butter after that.

Judy – Great job with the Peloton yoga and strength workouts, and your walk.

Cathy – You had a nice long walk at the zoo. Great work! Bummer about jury duty. A nice t-shirt will probably be okay for jury duty, but you definitely need pants. That’s great news that your mom has started using the ramp! Woohoo! All this talk about busting through walls reminded me of my dad’s accident. He hadn’t been home from the hospital for very long, and the house was not handicapped accessible. He was in the shower, fell really hard, and his foot went through the fiberglass stall and then through the sheetrock and into the wall space. Thank God it was his foot and not his head. Mom had to call an ambulance just to get him out of the shower. His foot was all sliced up and quite a mess. Needless to say, they began some home renovations, the first being to install a handicapped-accessible shower so he could sit down.

Valerie – I hope you and DH enjoyed the garden day, even though getting around is hard for him. I hope his dental work, etc. will move quickly so he can get his poor knee taken care of. I just found out yesterday that my dentist is retiring at the end of the year. I told my hygienist I can live with that, just as long as she doesn’t retire. She’s the one that does all the work on me! Now, I will cry if/when my eye doc retires. I trust him implicitly with my horrible vision.

Diane – How did the Jessica Smith workout feel? You are probably right about the instructions being for people who don’t exercise. I’m really glad your granddaughter is going to come over and help with some things. That storm sounds crazy! I’m glad there wasn’t any damage.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout one. That was 26 minutes, 168 calories burned, average heart rate 126, and maximum heart rate 146. I had virtual WW this morning and my husband has both PT and OT this afternoon.

Judy, great job with the 50 minute Peloton Yon Yoga, walk, and 40 minutes of Peloton strength.

Cathy, great job with walking at the zoo.

Valerie, nice work with gardening. I’m glad that your husband has the dental appointments scheduled soon.

Diane Sue, nice job with JS Walk and Talk. I‘ve done a few of those when I just want to get in a little more movement. They are good for the way that you used it.

Shannon, good job with ICE Chiseled Lower Body Blast, Shannon’s version. Your bread and butter comment made me chuckle. My bread is only spread with fresh avocado for avocado toast.

Have a great day everyone.
