Pavigym Flooring?

Hi there everybody--

Do any of you have home gyms where you have put in special flooring? I am in the process of redoing my workout room and would like to put in some type of fitness flooring.

I am interested in a product called Pavigym. Basically, it is like pieces of cushiony tile you lay down on the floor that interlocks, no glue required to install and you can do it yourself..

Anybody ever heard of this? Also, if anybody has recommendations I would love some advice.

Thanks in advance,

Lynn

Hi Lynn,
I'm going to bump a thread I started about Great Mats. They are dense foam 5/8" interlocking mats that come in 2' x 2' size. They fit together like a puzzle, clicking together in place easily.

They do sell at QVC for much less than what they sell for at greatmats.com, though, so if you decide to go this route you can do a search for 'anti-fatigue mats' on QVC and they'll come up.
You can also get them at costco. Check out the thread.

Cheers,
Kathy

Hi Kathy--

Wow this sounds like the way to go.. Can you buy enough of them to do like a whole room, or do they work best for just a limited area?

Thanks for the quick response!!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-02 AT 03:44PM (Est)[p]I purchased 6 sets (of the set of 4 2" x 2" squares) to fit in my 10' X 10' workout space (not sure if I ordered too many-I made a blueprint on a piece of paper to help me figure out what I needed and I think I got the correct amt. but if I got extra accidentally, I can use those, too).

I think you could do a larger or smaller portion of floor with them because they are flexible size-wise (i.e within 2 feet as they are 2x2 foot squares). Before you dive in, check out greatmats.com and read all about them, check out all the information you can. It's still expensive-my mats cost 109. including shipping. But Greatmats would have been 229. including shipping. I ordered a sample from Greatmats before I decided not to order from them so I got to chack out the product beforehand.

If there is a Costco near you, you might want to see if they have any (I've heard that they carry them), and you can give them an impromptu test-drive.
Kathy

edit: I forgot to mention that they are trimmable, too (using a ruler and a sharp utility knife).

WHOA...
Just checked out Pavigym's pricing on their site...4.44 per sq. foot!!!! YOW.

(Great Mats is 1.99 per, and since the QVC was a little less than half that price, I guess we can say QVC's 1.00/foot...just for reference!)

Hi Kathy--

Just checked out Great Mats website. I think I am going to make a road trip to Costco and check them out.

Did you put yours on carpet or on concrete/wood floor??
I have carpeting in the area I am redoing.. it says you can put it on carpet, but was wondering what you did and how it worked.

Also, do you kickbox? How does it work with that? Sometimes if your foot "adheres" too much to a spot you can twist funny and cause injury.. how does it compare to carpet?

Thanks again.. I think this is going to be exactly what I need and also a lot less expensive than the Pavigym product!!

I do everything on mine, and the only time I have to be careful is when I do a "slide" motion (like in HiLo Heaven)....your feel don't slide all that well on these mats. Other than that, I have mine on a basement floor and have had NO problems since I bought them in March of 2001. They are red and very pretty, I might add. I don't know if QVC offers the colors.

This is a very economical way to put a floor down for your workout area, and portable, too. Can't beat that.

I have just bought pavigym flooring for my workout room. (I live in Europe so the greatmats.com and costco are not an option) I just installed it but can't workout on it yet, since DH is working on installing a fan on the ceiling. I hope I can start working out this monday!!
From the descriptions I have read about the mats most of you have, I think those are softer. I think I can put my wooden tall box from the firm on the pavigym and not have dents.
Pavigym is specifically designed for aerobics and step and can be used in gyms and healthclubs so I assume they must do the job well :)

Hi Ilja--
Will you let me know how the Pavigym flooring works out once your DH installs the fan? I will be curious to hear your feedback!!

And, congratulations on getting your workout area redone!! It certainly is a motivator to continue to exercise , isn't it?

Lynn

Hi Ilja--

Hang in there.. I am sure it will be worth it once its finally complete!!

Hi Lynn

Hi Lynn,
to answer your questions, I can't yet, because I haven't recieved my order yet :).
I'm awaiting my shipment from QVC. I will let you know how it all works once I get them installed and have had time to bounce around on them for awhile. BTW, I do use kickbox aerobic videos, and I am going to have to find a compromise if the mats are not slidey enough for them because I will not give them up lol !

RE: Hi Lynn

Hi Kathy--

Thanks for the reply.. I will be anxious to hear your feedback!

I am agreement w/your love for kickboxing! Its such a fun workout.
What other kickboxing tapes do you have? ( I am assuming you have Cathe's.) I am looking for some as challenging or more than Cathe's. Have you found any good ones?

Lynn

RE: Hi Lynn

Hi Lynn,
I use Cardio Kicks and CTX Kickbox right now (also love the kickboxing circuits in Circuit Max). I'm getting 2 Janis Saffell CIA Kickbox tapes from VF Exchange, in fact I just got one of them today (9809) yay! Haven't viewed it yet, still at work right now.
It's funny, I really need to branch out with kickboxing, because I now enjoy it so much (...or is it just Cathe's kickboxing that I enjoy? :) ) When I started doing kickboxing tapes, I was using Kathy Smith Kickboxing and Aerobox, and ( *please* DON'T LAUGH - okay, go ahead) Denise Austin. (I was also not as conditioned, as you might have guessed)! I've been doing my research over at VF. I think Aaron Lankford's "Power Kicks" sounds like something I might want to try, as does Katalin Zamiar's G.I Jabb "Warrior Workout". I did borrow a Tae Bo tape from the library once, but I don't think I like Billy Blank's video-instructor personality (disclaimer: He very well may be a great instructor in real life (I'm sure he is), I personally just don't care for his style).
...Although, vidiot that I am, if the trade is right over at VF I *might* be willing to give it another go. The Get Ripped Advanced looked like I *might* be able to tolerate it...but I'm afraid that my tolerance would run out after 3 minutes..lol

RE: Hi Lynn

HI Kathy--

While Cathe's kickboxing is my favorite, Kelli Roberts has a pretty good kickboxing tape...its called Kickbutt Combat. It isn't quite as challenging as Cathe's but it is fun to do and she is a great instructor. I would recommend it if you are looking for another one.

I won't mock you for Denise Austin.. I am a secret "Gilad" fan myself. Sigh, I think we all have our "closet" favorites. That is funny!!
I am also with you on Billy Blanks.. he is too "zen" for me. I just want to sweat and be done!

If you come across any good kickboxing tapes once you decide, I would love to hear some recommendations.

Flooring Part TWO-I got my mats!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-06-02 AT 11:43AM (Est)[p]Lynn,
Thanks for the info about Keli Roberts' Kickbutt Kombat. Gee, I have previewed that tape several times, and, I don't know what it is, but I've never ordered it or requested it off the VF Exchange. And I really like Keli Roberts, too. I think that I might, though, eventually, just to see if it works for me. The more interested I get in kickboxing workouts, well, you just gotta try them all, right?

I may be getting the Aaron Langford Powerkicks tape, and will let you know my thoughts on it, if I do. I previewed the CIA 9809 Janis Saffell Kickbox Express tape yesterday, and it looks good (with a few modifications, of course). It's a long workout.

Lynn, have you tried CTX Kickbox? It's really great as well, more full-on drill-type moves dominating the workout as opposed to CK which has the combos section and then the drill section. They are different from each other. As far as kickbox workouts go, I'd say they complement eachother!

FLOORING, Part two:
I revieved my QVC flooring today (yay!!!) and I can say that these mats are just about identical (in texture and density) to the sample I recieved from GreatMats.com. I have yet to jump around on them, though. I don't have the GreatMats sample with me right now, but I can say this from memory, and when I get them home, and set them up, I will have plenty more to say about them. But, for now, so far, so good!
:)
Kathy

edit: ps i just wanted to add...I am *psyched* to do those CK 'sequential power kick' drills on my new floor mats!!!
Yippee!!!!

RE: Flooring Part TWO-I got my mats!

Hi Kathy--

Great news on receiving your mats today.. Isn't it amazing how much more motivated something new gets you to exercise?

I do have the ctx series.. Love the kickboxing one, too!!

Will look forward to the report soon!!

RE: Flooring Part Three- I tried the flooring!

Hi Lynn,
I have the flooring all set up, and have done a workout on it.
I did some hi/lo and step part of MIC. Also did yoga. I am very happy with it so far. It really is nice to jump around on, and I feel that my joints have much more cushioning than exercising on the hard wood floor. As for yoga and stretching, wow, what a great difference. Putting one knee on the floor in a lunge position is no longer painful! Yipee!!
The ONE caveat so far with the mats is that when I weas doing a lot of lateral movements, it slid around a bit. I put a small anti-slip mat (the kind you would put under a rug) under a portion of it in a pinch so i could continue my workout without sliding, and it worked pretty well. Still a bit of sliding but not too much. When I say the flooring slid, I don't mean the individual peices, i mean the whole flooring piece, all connected (I don't have it installed wall-to-wall, which would fix this problem).
So, so far, that is the only thing that wasn't fabulous about the flooring, and it is easily fixed.
Haven't done any kickboxing yet on the floor, but I'm sure I'll have even more 'spring' in my step when I do :)
Kathy

RE: Flooring Part Three- I tried the flooring!

Hi Kathy--

Other than the slipping problem, it sounds like a winner!!
Great idea about putting the anti slip mat under the bottom.. You are like a "fitness MacGyver!" :)

And, if you did MIC on it and your knees didn't protest, it definitely sounds great!!

After trying the mats, do you think the mats would work on top of carpet?? Or would it be too thick?

Thanks for the feedback,

Lynn

RE: Flooring Part Three- I tried the flooring!

Lynn-
hmm. that's tough to say. I don't have any carpets in my home, so I can't even do an experiment for you. That is a very good question, though, and if I am remembering correctly, I think I read on a post (either here or over at VF) that someone did use them over carpeting. I am not sure though whether they used them right over carpeting, or whether the person placed the flooring over another coat of flooring over the carpeting. Confused yet? So, I can't say myself, but I think that's a good question for the educated crowd here, or the one over at VF.

I've done step on the flooring now, too, and it's beautiful! It doesn't budge during step, and I really notice the new 'ease' (for lack of a better word :) ) with which I can perform those power moves.
