Pants for Pears?

I went shopping today, and for a change, I had some money to spend. I came home with jackets, tops, and purses, but NO PANTS! My hips are about 12 inches larger than my waist, and everything out there seems to be made straight. If I find pants that fit me in the hip area, I would need to fit a melon in by the small of my back to take up the excess in the waist. It's so frustrating! Anyone else out there have success solving this problem?

I go thru that all the time...it seems pants are made 2 ways...skinny legs & big waist or big legs & small waist and I rarely find the latter. Levis made some yrs ago 560's that were perfect but not anymore. And now with the LOWER styles....I'd probably have to shave! I don't know if you have heard of Rocky Mountain jeans? They make a relaxed fit that works. I did find also some Lee Performance Khakis ( more of a casual pant) thru JC Penneys but I think they are also being discontinued. I do keep looking though...:)...Carole

I also wear Rocky Mountain 5 pocket relaxed jeans as well as Cruel Girl relaxed jeans. I also like Tommy Hilfiger relaxed fit. My hips are 10 inches bigger than my waist and those all fit me great. You can find Rocky Mountains and Cruel Girl at www.cavenders.com.

Isn't it frustrating. Sometimes when I shop for pants, especially jeans I feel like a mutant. Thanks for the website.

Thanks....I forgot about Cruel and Tommy...it has been awhile since I bought any. Thanks too for the website. ...:)...Carole

I have the exact same problem. It is awful. My waist is about 11 inches smaller than my hips. My upper hips are also very narrow. So, all the pants are very big in the waist and upper hips if they fit my butt and thighs. I get soo frustrated. I own about 4 pair of Tommy, and some of those don't fit the best. I am going to check out the Rocky jeans on the website..

Have a great day!!

Just an FYI, the Rocky Mountains I like are 5 pocket. The others that are very high waisted with no pockets on the behind tend to run rather slim in the waist. At least for me. I used to wear these a lot before I developed some fat around middle. If you don't have fat around your waist line, these jeans look really nice on and have a slimming effect to them. I hope that made sense. I find that the Cruel Girl jeans are little larger in the waist. Of course everyone is built differently, so you may have to experiment.

I found some great lower rise jeans by Lee at JC Penny-- "one true fit" is written on the label, maybe that is their name. They are stretch and they are the only ones I've found that were not gigantic in the waist. They are also amazingly flattering for a pear- I didn't think I would ever be able to wear the lower rise. My husband says they make me look like a teenager!!!! (I'm 46.)

Hi Lynda,

As a fellow pear, I feel your pain. I found a decent fit with some Levi's Dockers www.dockers.com, particularly the Ideal Stretch Pant and the Metro Pant. The waist sits just below the navel on these so there isn't as much excess space in that area.

I have a 17 inch difference between my hips and waist right now. I am liking Old Navy's stretch "just below the waist" jeans. They fit nice and give where I need it, but go in where I don't.

You know what I have found? If you go with a slightly lower rise - not the kind that make you think why did they bother even wearing pants - but maybe 1 or 2 inches below you navel, and get ones with a drawstring you can cinch up the slack and it actually fits pretty well. Old Navy is good for those. Also the lower the rise, the less contrast you see between a narrow waist and wide hips (learned that on What Not to Wear).

Calvin Klein makes a pretty nice relaxed fit (read: not for teenagers) jean that seems to be okay. Not perfect, but at least you don't walk out feeling like you must have the biggest butt in the universe, because you couldn't possibly have the smallest waist! I really don't know who they make most of these for. Good luck.

I have this problem too. I'm seriously considering liposuction for butt and thigh area. If you can find jeans that fit great in the waist, chances are you add tug them on over your thighs. I hate it! For me, Land's End relaxed fit jeans fit my waist and thighs quite nicely. Good Luck!:p
