PalmOne software

Has anyone downladed any of the exercise PalmOne software? I thought about downloading some software onto my PDA but wanted to see if there was any suggestions. How about the maps? Any of them any good for driving directions? I was a little surprised the selection was so large for the downloads. I typed in exercise and there is 100 titles.

Hey Sabrina, how's it going? :)

I have used a diet/exercise program for my palm before, and it was alright. I just got out of the habit of using it consistently. This is the one I had:

http://palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&PartnerREF=&siteid=1&prodID=14071

It is a very good program for tracking your food intake and exercise, but I always question the accuracy of calorie-burn-calculators for exercise. It's probably good enough for a rough estimate. It does provide some nice graphs and shows you when you've had too much fat, not enough protein, etc. That's handy.

There is also a desktop version you can get that will synchronize with the palm version, which is handy.

As for mapping software - my husband has a great one that he bought at Office Depot and I cannot remember right now what it's called. I just know he did a lot of research before choosing a mapping program. He hooks up a little GPS to his PDA when we're out driving and the program tells us where to turn, how many more miles to drive etc. It's really nifty. I'll ask him later which program it is. I don't think you can download it, that's why we had to go to Office Depot to buy it.

Hi Emily!

Things are going well. The hard report card pick up today and they are done for the summer. Yikes! Have to find things for them to do. How are things going for you? How was your training?

Thanks for the link. I will have to check it out. I want something to help me keep track of weight, reps, etc. I thought it would be easier to carry the PDA around rather than a bunch of papers or a notebook. This was I have everything else I need with me too.

Please find out what the program is that your DH has. I would like to find something. What GPS does he have? I am not too familier with those. Sounds like you have what I am looking for though.

I just got the PDA. I had some rewards saved up and ended up only paying $7 to get it and the service plan.

Let me know what you find out from your DH. Thank you!!:)

Ahh, okay - for tracking reps/weights, that program I gave you the link for won't work (I don't think). I'd say you might be best off to use Microsoft Excel for that, honestly. You can get Documents To Go, which is Microsoft Office for your palm. You can import/export to/from your PC too. Then you can set it up exactly how you want.

The program for mapping is called Street Atlas USA, made by DeLorme:

http://www.delorme.com/streetatlasusahandheld/default.asp

I have a little Garmin GPS unit, designed for hiking mostly. I got it as an "incentive" to come interview with Corning Inc. back in college. I didn't interview with them, but I kept the GPS! ;) Now DH has staked a claim on it because I never used it much.

What kind of PDA did you get? You sure did get a good deal on it, whatever it is! $7 - what a bargain!

I bought the PalmOne Tungsten E2. Thought it was a good place to start. Especially since I had to only pay $7. The E2 is $250 and the service plan was $50. I had $300 between rewards and a gift card.

I will look into the Street Atlas USA and see what we think. I don't have a GPS unit though and would have to look into getting one of those. Not sure what to look at. Have to do some research and determine if I want to get one now or not.

Thanks for the info.! Looks like I have some reading and research to do later.:)

You don't have to have a GPS to use that map program. However, if you do want to get one, you don't need anything particularly fancy for this particular purpose. All it needs to be able to do is find the satellites and tell you your location with a reasonable amount of accuracy (20 ft accuracy is pretty good). I believe they still make the one we have - the Garmin eTrex, and it's relatively inexpensive (maybe $100 or less?). Of course, if you think you may actually a use for a GPS device to go with your map software, you'd be best off investing in an actual interactive GPS designed for your automobile - much more user friendly than a GPS device hooked up to a PDA. Especially while driving! :p The only reason we hook the GPS up to DH's PDA is because DH is a geek and he wanted to prove how geek-like he was by making the connector cable himself and getting it to work. ;)

That is good that I don't have to have the GPS to use the program. I just need to look and see if it works with my PDA. Maybe I should wait and get the GPS when I get enough points saved up!:) What PDA do you have?

I have a Sony Clie PEG-TH55. You can't get Sony PDAs anymore, much to my dismay. As soon as I heard they were pulling out of the PDA market, I bought another one (I had been using a Sony Clie NX60 and I LOVED it so much). So I hope this one lasts a long time because IMO, Sony made some of the best Palm OS-based PDAs around. I don't know what I'll do when I need to get another PDA. Probably break down and cry! ;)

I've been trying out a relatively new program called MySportTraining:
http://www.mysporttraining.com/

It does let you track number of reps and what weights you use, but I am finding that entering the data is a little annoying. However, you can probably download a trial version and see for yourself how you like it. It's getting great reviews. Don't know what PDAs it's compatible with. I am looking forward to using it with my heart rate monitor--I chiefly want to use it to be able to track the intensity of my workouts, based on heartrate.

Thanks Bunbun! I saw this one listed and thought I would look into it. Maybe I will start with the trail and see if it annoys me too. Do you know what heart rate montiors it works with? I need to look that up.

It's listed on their website, and also if you're not sure, you can email them--they answered me quickly. The monitor I want to buy won't work with it, nor will it work with my PDA anyhow, but I want to try the program for its ability to chart your workouts. Let me know what you think if you try it.

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

I've been using MySportTraining software on my Palm (with the desktop version too) since January and I adore it.

I entered all my exercise videos in as separate workouts and I just choose which one I did each morning and enter the # of minutes and I'm done.

The graphing is pretty incredible. I love the calendar on the Palm, it shows me how much I'm keeping on track and uses colored icons to indicate which workout I did (strength training, kickboxing, step, etc).

I plan to run a report at the end of the year to figure out which workouts I did the most/least and analyze my fitness habits...

I think it's intuitive and easy-to-use. They do offer the option of allowing you to enter each exercise/rep/sets but I found that tedious.

I downloaded trials and tested about 30 different programs before choosing this one.

Enjoy...

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

Hi Dawn. How did you enter your exercise videos? (eg, did you put in all the separate exercises/reps? Just put in the name of the workout and set it as, say, "weight lifting"? I'm trying to figure out which is best. LOVE the graphs! I only have the PDA version right now--not sure if I want the desktop version, too, since I don't think I'll use it as much. What do you like about the desktop version?

Many thanks!

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

Thanks for the help ladies! I have decided so far to get the Street Atlas USA 2005 and the My Sports Training download. Still trying to decide if I want the desktop version of My Sport Trainging too. Do you have any recommendations for money/finance software or downloads? I thought I would put something fun on my PDA too in case I get stuck at the airport on my trip! LOL!:) I hope that wont happen though. Any fun games out there?

Thanks again for the help!!:)

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

I'm a total PDA addict. Don't know how I lived without it. For money/finance stuff, I absolutely LOVE SplashMoney. I've used Quicken on my PC for years, but like this program better. With the new upgrade they put out this month, I can connect to my bank on my phone-PDA and reconcile my account (I know Quicken can do that, but have never been able to get it to work with my bank for some reason). I can also log transactions on my PDA as I make them, rather than having to wait until the end of the day to get to my home comp. Also love the budget feature on SplashMoney--you can allocate how much you want to spend in each category, and then track it to see how well you're doing. Never been able to figure out how to do that on Quicken, though I'm sure you can! LOL..ok, I'm an idiot with Quicken, I guess. Last, I still backup my PDA SplashMoney files to Quicken, so I can printout my account info when needed. SplashMoney comes with a desktop version, but I like Quicken better because I can back it up on disk.

Not sure of the web page where you can find it, but if you search for it on google, I'm sure it will be no problem to find.

HTH!!

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

Fun games - tons of 'em for sure! One of my favorites is Bejeweled, it is terribly addictive. I also have a game called InsaneAquarium that is rather addictive as well. These two, and tons of other highly addictive games are available from http://www.popcap.com/ Highly recommend! Oh, and I also have a MahJongg solitaire game that was free and is excellent. It's called FreeJongg - you can download it here: http://www.freewarepalm.com/games/freejongg.shtml

I could recommend lots of different software for the Palm... but I'll quit while I'm ahead. Most of the stuff I have is for a geek like me anyway. ;)

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

Bunbun-I have seen the splash money. I was actually looking at it with one called splash wallet suite and it has 4 different downloads together--splash money, splash ID, splash photo, and splash shopper. Just found it last night but not had much of a chance to see what they all do. Have you heard about any of the others? Found it at www.palmone.com

Emily-I seen the Bejeweled 2 listed. Have you seen the Village Sim one? I wondered what it would be like. I don't have any of the Sims games for the computer so I don't know what they are like. I will have to look at the site you suggested and see what they have there.

Thank you!:)

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

Hi Sabrina. When I bought Splash Money, it came with demo versions of Splash ID and Splash Shopper. I don't use either of them--BF does all the shopping, so I don't carry the shopping list on my PDA, and Splash ID--I think I've just been too lazy to use! I did try it out just now, though. Seems ok--guess it's a good way to store all your passwords, and I should really use it, especially for paying my bills online. Every month I have to email the electric and cable company because I can't remember my login and/or password (mainly because you have to set both to conform to their conventions, and I can never remember what each company makes you use). Also, I have so many passwords and user IDs now that it's getting out of hand. I don't have Splash Photo--no idea what that can do--do you?

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

I don't have any idea yet either. Going to look later after our company leaves from our sons b-day party. The SplashMoney suite just came up at the top of the list that I was looking at on the PalmOne site. There was also Ultrasoft Money on the top 5. Have you heard anything about that one? Want to get some things downloaded and onto the PalmOne later. Bought the Street Atlas USA 2005 that Emily suggested, I hope not to get lost on the Cathe road trip! LOL! I am still looking at the games and which one(s) I want.

RE: using mysporttraining Palm software & love it

Haven't heard of Ultrasoft Money before--the reviews on PalmOne are pretty reliable, I find, though. Now you've got me wanting to go look at software there!
