My chriopractor/sports doc recommended this exercise for me after I came in last week expressing tightness across my lower back. This is a problem I've had for years and years - it sometimes subsides, but it can start to get aggravated again when I bump up the amount of physical activity I've been doing.
He's not having me do it with the weight - just simply the pressing out motion with the band to the side of me. It's really wild how much my core activates with this.
Thought I'd share it if anyone out there feels like they need better stability in their back and perhaps most of your normal core exercises aren't quite hitting the spot.
