I purchased P90X about 6 months ago and have been putting it off. I would like to start it tomorrow but would like to substitute the cardio with running due to my new love affair with CC. I will crosstrain on occasion with kickboxing & step. What do you think? Will doing this affect my results too much? I'm mainly interested in the strength training part of this series although the YogaX is pretty good. Also, I don't think I can handle 3 months straight of ARX so I plan to sub with CoreMax once in awhile.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

What you describe is basically what I did plus I added one Cathe leg work out per week to the mix for a while as well. I got excellent results. I would say that as long as you don't do TOO much cardio then you should not negatively affect your results. I did cardio 3x per week for the most part and was fine. I did yoga every week but did not use Yoga X all of the time.

I think you should go for it!:)

Yep, what Wendy said. I often sub in the cardio for running or kickboxing. ;-) The strength training is AWESOME so I would stick to that part of it. And CoreMax would be a good sub for ARX. HTH!

Thanks Wendy & Jess:)

How did you handle pull-ups? I can do a few chin-ups but can only get 1/2 up on pull-ups. Should I just use a chair and work negatives or try a few and switch to lat pull-downs?

Also, how did you determine your weight loads? Did you lift moderate loads in phase one then switch to a heavy load that you can only lift 8 reps in phase 2? I was thinking I would use the moderate & heavy weights that I lift with Cathe workouts.

I read the manual but didn't do the fitness assessment. I know my RHR and have worked out all my life (last 9yrs with Cathe) so I think I'm ready. Anywhoo-I'm psyched. Wish me luck and I hope you don't mind my checking back with you during the process for help & moral support:D

I did them with the pullup bar & a chair. Yes, I HIGHLY recommend doing them with the negatives, that's what really worked for me.

As for deciding what weights to use, I decided to use the 8-10 rep range. So I just basically picked the weights that I felt I could max out at 10 reps and once I was doing about 12 reps I'd get a heavier weight the next time. And I do recommend writing down your weights & reps, I have the link to the downloadable worksheets if you need them!

I think you're fine not to do the fit test if you've been working out with Cathe. ;-) The only thing I worried about was the pullups and even though I couldn't do any to start with, I was able to do them by the end of 90 days!!

And feel free to ask if you have any questions or email me! I just finished my 3rd round!

I use a chair for pull/chin ups to assist me. When I am doing them regularly I can do maybe 3 reverse grip chin ups starting from a bent arm position, unasissted. That's it and even THAT took me a while to be able to do. IMO it doesn't even matter if you can EVER do one unassisted pull/chin up. They are just simply AWESOME for your back. The BEST way to sexy muscular back if you ask me! Don't get me wrong-having the strength to be able to do it is awesome-just not NECESSARY to see the results. :)

I worked the 12-15 range and basically picked a weight for each exercise at the beginning that I thought would work. If it didn't, I simply adjusted the next time I did the work out. :)

I didn't do the fitness assessment either. Too impatient to go through that. I just wanted to get started already! :p :7

I just bought P90X and am going to start in a few weeks. I want to know if Cathe will have that pull-up bar thingy that she shows in her blog for sale this year, I want that!! But I was thinking about making a modified one using chairs and my weight bar. Would that work the same as the pull up bar? Or should I just get a pull up bar for my doorway?

OMG!! Didn't preview just jumped right in. OUCHx(

I can't believe how fast they move both during and between exercises. My form starts to suffer if I go too fast so I just went at my own pace. The pull ups are so d*mn hard and forget negatives...I tried and couldn't hold them. I can do 3-4 unassisted chin ups alone but when I got to them in this workout, I could even complete one! HTH? The moves with weights were no problem but what is the difference between heavy pants and lawnmowers (other than double vs single arm)? The both seem to be back rows. WOW..I've got a lot of work ahead of me.

I am humbled and bow to those who have completed P90X and survived}(

No expert here - but I started my second week today!!!:) (couldn't decide on which smiley here;-)

I'm loving this workout! I believe I needed a change and this is it! The first time I done the ab work I thought it was going to kill my hip flexors!x( No joke, those babies were sore for 4 days!

Trying to stick to his diet plan as close as possible...at least it's giving me an excellent idea on portion control.

Hopefully I'll finish it before STS comes out!}(

That's what the pause button is for! Yes, pullups are tough!! Just keep at it, you will build up amazing strength in your back (and your whole upper body & core!) form doing them. The Heavy pants and lawnmowers are similar but you are leaning a bit more and I can go heavier w/ the lawnmowers since you are doing one at a time. Just keep at it up!!

I've heard of people using a weight bar for them but really don't know. I have the BB over the door pullup bar which I love! Before I got it my dh had made me a pullup bar in the garage but once winter hit I did NOT want to keep running out to the freezing garage to do them!

Yeah, 2nd week! I was the same way when I started P90X. I had been using Cathe's workouts for a good year and needed a change. It was really the change that I needed! Yeah, ARX does really work the hip flexors at first.

Glad that you're sticking to the diet plan, eating makes a HUGE difference in your results!

That sounds really similar to what I'm doing as well, especially the new love affair with CC part:) I think the variety will help keep things fresh and keep it interesting for you. I was just at one of Tony Horton's fitness camps this past weekend and he actually addressed this very issue. I am in my third round right now and each one has been just a little different.

Good luck with your rotation and keep us posted!
