P90X Check in - April 12th

I'm going to take a total break from the P90X DVD's until I start my rotation. I'm going to do mainly Cardio and yoga - maybe SIM tomorrow. I start on Sunday. I'm nervous and excited all at once.

I'm not really planning on following the eating plan exactly - but I do want to add more protein to my diet. Does anyone have any good suggestions for high protein breakfasts that I can take to work with me? I can only drink so many shakes! ;-)

Another question - and I know this seems weird, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I took a rest day on Monday. I'd like to work through next week as I'm taking it easier this week, but that would mean a straight 11 days of workouts. I have Step Blast and Stretch X planned for Saturday. Should I just skip Step Blast and go in very very fresh? I was thinking that since Step Blast doesn't work upper body, I might be able to get away with it. Or am I simply dreaming?

Hi Christine...
I won't be following the eating plan exactly either. I'll be doing the exact same as you....just adding more protein. I am on the go alot for work....and eat alot on the run. Food Planning has to be simple for me. I'm going to try to add some "protein" snacks between meals. Kindof like in the nutrition plan in P90X, phase I. I like soy nuts, good source of protien. You can also check out Revival Soy (www.revivalsoy.com) they have some really good products.

I was pre-viewing the chest & Back routine....kind of scares me...all those push-ups and pull-ups!! Yikes! All though, I excited about the challenge....

Thanks for your postings!! They have been such a help:)

Hi Christine,

My opinion is that you should start the rotation fresh. If you give Chest & Back, (plus Ab ripper) 100%, you will be pretty wasted after...or later on. (It hits me later..even up to a day and a half sometimes. Weird!) But if you must do some cardio, I would absolutely skip the blasts. Even though they don't work your upper so much, they take up a lot of energy. BTW, regardless of when you get breakfast, your body will appreciate something for recovery right after the workout.

Trying to come up with some portable protein sources...
Yogurt or Cottage Cheese & fruit
Protein bar & Fruit
Hard boiled eggs (you could always throw some yolk out if you want...I do! Can't stand it!)
Oatmeal with nuts (if you have a thermos) or you could take a bit of protein powder with and add it when you eat (Mine gets bitter if I let it sit too long after adding it to anything)
Tuna or egg sandwich or in a whole grain pita
Tofu scramble?? Is that a real dish?
Some of those recipes in the P90X book are really good.

HTH, Julie

I have a great Tofu scramble recipe!!! But I was wondering how much protien daily are you going for? When I did P90X the first time I didn't follow their diet but I most likely had between 60 to 75 grams of (vegetable) protein a day. I got great results with that and as a vegan worry a bit about others eating too much protein as I don't feel it is good for your body.

Okay, off my soapbox...:)...as far as if you should do Stepblast Sat. If your body is used to that much cardio in a week then go for it. P90X is low on cardio. So as a runner that runs 6 days a week, I wouldn't think Stepblast is a problem Sat. But then again starting a rotation fresh is always a good idea...:)

So Christine, go by how you feel...

I have looked at the recipes, and a lot of them do look good. Lunch and dinner and the snacks I have, but I can't figure out breakfasts. I have been on a vegetarian diet and have been eating mostly clean for the last 40 days (can you say Lent?) and the difference of getting the processed foods out of my system is amazing. I simply don't want to go back to that, so that limits my options. I think I'll go to Whole Foods and see what they have. I love Amy's Kitchen products - organic, vegetarian, and no processing. I will be adding a little meat back into my diet, but no where the amounts of before.

Julie - thanks! I think I have it figured out. I'll take Friday completely off (my long workouts have always been Sat and Sun, so it kills me to take a day off on Sat!) and do Step Blast and Stretch X on Saturday. At least I'll be mostly rested. And I can sleep in on Friday! (An added bonus).

Alicia - I haven't looked at it yet - I'll review it tomorrow. I am nervous about this rotation as well. I'm still not as strong as I'd like to be push up wise, but I'm looking forward to strengthening myself. I'm starting with bands for pull ups, but that may change.

I agree - the help on this forum is incredible! I cannot tell y'all how much I appreciate knowing that y'all are here to help! I feel that a few of you should start charging training fees! And I'd gladly pay! :)
