Over-40 diet maintenance

Cynthia, I've had clothes tailored before & haven't been very happy w/it. It seems to ruin the lines of the clothes, if you know what I mean. When I lost 30 lbs I tried to have 9s tailored into 2s & the front pockets ended up on my butt cheeks. :D

I know what you mean, but I wasn't talking about altering sizes. I generally buy what fits closest to my body. Most often, if I get the hips to fit, I have to tailor the waist. Small changes:)

Sounds like you might come to terms with it, but another vote with govt. girl here. I'm 47 and I weigh ten pounds more than I did at some earlier age, but I sometimes wonder where those ten pounds are -- some days I don't feel like I look much different. I have my days where I think I used to look a lot leaner, but I have to remember the life is too short mantra. Life is good....... (and yes, so are tailors).

Oh go on! Laura, I did mean you! Thanks for the info. I think I am losing muscle mass. I'm feeling pretty weak, & this of all weeks my work schedule has kept me from the gym so I couldn't even make an effort to keep the muscles.

I'm not sure which body type I prefer. My only answer is I don't want to see anything jiggling when I'm doing cardio. :(

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty close to the weight I want to be now. I'll take it all into account, talk to the nutritionist, & see where I go from here.

I'll post the nutritionist's diet when I get it, maybe others will be interested as well. :)

Oh go on! Laura, I did mean you! :)

Okay--here you go--You ARE hot! Are you kidding me? I've only seen you in pictures and wish I could meet you in person!! Not only do you have a physique that so many on this forum respect, you seem to be a genuinely nice, knowledge, humorous person. I have no agenda here as I've never met you. You know how things can sometimes come across differently on the Internet than in face-to-face interactions? Well, whenever you post or respond to someone else's post, the folks here flock to read it. I'm not just speaking for myself either.

So, with that said, I know it's hard to come to grips with being "okay" in your skin. It really does come down to how you feel. I have clients who have lost 100+ lbs, but still see the same overweight person they used to be. Personally, I used to be really skinny (think Olive Oil--skinny fat). Then I started weight training. Before I started gaining weight, I didn't think that I looked that bad. Well, even with a 17lb weight gain (10 from weight training, 7 from the baby), I think I still look too thin! Isn't that nuts??? It just shows that when I was "skinny-fat" I didn't think I looked bad. It's only when I go back to photos of myself that I realized how gaunt I was. Ugh! So, you may never like what you see. Tounge in cheek, I like the saying, "It's better to look good than to feel good" (think Fernando on SNL), but I know that's not realistic. The main thing is that you're happy in your skin. And NO ONE can figure that out for you, but you.

Keep the postings coming girl! We all love them.

Aw! The same back at you! I'm so glad you're here & I fully expect a meet up--hopefully at one of Cathe's RTs--when you come back! :)

Laura, you cannot expect to maintain your loss on that few calories at all, especially since you workout so hard. That is just silly woman, you know better. ;)

I worked with a guy who trains the fitness competitors. He is an expert at exercise and nutrition, I went from 18 percent bodyfat to 13 percent in 12 weeks, nope did not maintain 13 percent, 18 percent is perfect for me actually, I just wanted to prove to myself I could do it at my "old age", I am 42. Here is his web site. www.bodybyo.com

His name is Kim...I did the 12 week transformation plan. I was eating at least 1,600 calories a day.

Tneah- was his diet realistic for people who love food, or is it just people who are already disciplined and need a little guidance.

Laura - you may not like this approach since you are a foodie and a meat eater (I know what you mean, I love good food too). BUT - a vegan approach to eating can lean you out pretty quickly and be very satisfying. A low fat vegan/raw diet may allow you to cut out any excess bloat you are carrying and still give you plenty of food to eat without counting calories. Eat to Live is a good resource (Joel Fuhrman).

It's a very different approach to eating than what most people follow (much lower in protein many people here recommend, for example).

I'm 43 and went vegetarian last summer (not as extreme as the Eat to Live diet). It is what helped me shed the last few pounds that were hanging on from the 10 I was trying to lose. My husband has lost 12 pounds in less than 2 weeks (he's 45).

Hi Laura,

I've read a lot of your posts and I'm always impressed by your intelligence and your sense of humor. Congratulations on having the discipline to do what you need to do to make yourself happy. Maybe they're right and your body wants to weigh 10 lbs more, but you don't have to accept that without putting up a fight. It all has to come down to what you can live with. You have to decide if it's worth 10lb less to deprive yourself or not. Like others have said, I've seen your pictures and you look great!

I'm also trying to figure out what I can and cannot eat while still being happy with myself. I am so much happier with myself when I'm down in weight, but then again I also love sitting down to a delicious supper with some dessert. What's a girl to do?

According to all the calories charts, you should be able to eat a lot more calories than you are and still lose weight. But as much as they would like us to believe, it's not just calories in - calories burned.

One of your posts several months ago prompted me to clean out my closet so I only had clothes that fit. It if very freeing to get up for work to get dressed and not ever put on something that's too tight. Thank you.

Annie

Hey Laura. I am not sure if this has already been posted because I haven't read through all of the responses but it seems that you have always been dieting. Am I right? Have you ever thought that maybe your body is tired of it? It could me metabolic damage. Check out Leigh Peele. She has some books on the subject. Check out this website maybe.
