OT-To all horse owners/barn workers

I know this seems a strange place to post this but I do know that there are a lot of people on this board that either own or work with horses so I wanted to give you all a heads up. There have been multiple cases of EHV-1 (commonly known as rhinopneumonitis or equine herpes virus) reported in CT, FL, CA and possibly MD (awaiting confirmation on that one). The most recent outbreak at UCONN is the most troubling because it was thought to be contained within Wellington, FL. They are trying to determine how these latest two positives in CT contracted the disease. EHV-1, in and of itself, is not uncommon, however, what we are now seeing is a neurologic form of the virus which has proven lethal in a few cases.

This warning is not meant to cause any kind of panic just to let all of you who work with horses know what's going on. Many people outside of the hunter/jumper world are currently unaware of this situation and, at this point, I think everyone, in every discipline, should be a bit more diligent with their barn management practices (disinfecting items, quarantine any new horses entering a barn, etc.). I know that the facility that we are currently working out of here in NY (we normally head to FL for the winter circuit-not this year!!!) is self quarantined as of this past Tuesday and won't allow any new horses to come in until the end of February, at the earliest. This is being done with the sole purpose of protecting our currently healthy and virus free equine population.

There is far too much information on the subject to post here. This is probably your best resource on the current outbreak...

www.chronofhorse.com

Go to the bulletin board...go to "Off Course". There are two threads devoted to this (sorry, I don't know how to link)...

"EHV-1 Resource...." has a lot of links and updates
"The BIG EHV-1 thread..." is the ongoing discussion about all cases.

Hopefully, with the proper diligence this recent outbreak will die a quick death.

Thank you for your time,

Wendi

Maeghan...I sent you a PM.

It's been amazing to me how many people outside of the hunter/jumper world have no clue that this is going on, especially now that there are cases here in the northeast, outside of our discipline. So far it's affected jumpers, polo ponies and a couple of racehorses. Scary stuff!

Oh, and a great big "thank you" to everyone who sent Lace their prayers. She is alive which even the vet seems to think is miraculous. We're just hoping that she can recover from the neurologic damage that has been done.

Thank you again,

Wendi
