OT - how much to tip hair stylist?

Are you suppose to tip 10% 20% or something in between? I haven't been to a hair dresser in years and don't know what the proper thing is these days. Thanks!

I usually tip 20% but I will tip more if they did an awesome job.

Of course, the happy medium would be 15%. Also, in some salons the hairdressers DO NOT wash your hair. They have hairwashers and you are really supposed to tip them too ( I usually only tip them a couple of dollars). I personally prefer having the hairdresser do the wash and cut.

My daugther does this for a living so I asked her. She said 20% is nice but could be considered a bit high for some people too. She works in a high end salon where cuts alone are $40 therefore she said she's happy with whatever tips she gets. :+

Great question! I just switched hairstylists/colorists and my question is was do I need to tip her if she is the owner? My first two trips I did because I wasn't sure; is it okay to stop tipping her? My other stylist/owner would not accept tips!

So many hairstylists rent a space in hair salons and I don't really consider them an owner. I always tip 20%, same for taxi drivers. Years ago I worked in a very upscale hair salon as a receptionist and everyone used to tip the owner, he didn't mind at all. For me personally, I am going to tip regardless of ownership, I would just feel weird not doing so.

Hmmmm.....comming from an Hairstylist...I don't even know.I think it is somewhere between 10-20%. It is odd b/c sometimes you get nothing,and then there are other times when you get anywhere between 2-20 dollars.It is pretty much at your own discreation.
I find it strange when people tip their waiters more then they tip their hairstylist.A waiter spends about 3 minutes with you and gets about $5, depending on how many people are at the table.Then a hairstylist spends 30 min to 2 hours and gets the same as a waiter.
Sometimes you can ask your hairstlyist and they will tell you but then there are others,like me, who would say ,well it doesn't matter, whatever you want.
