OT - Hole in septum

Hi All,

Has anyone had this or heard of this. The septum is the piece in your nose that separates the notrils. I had a bloody nose from dry air that kept scabbing over and it would softed in the shower each day and the scab would come out when I blew my nose.

I finally went to the doc because it just kept doing that. I think I waited to long. She thinks there is a small hole in my septum but was not sure until it fully heals up?

She didn't seemed like it was a big deal and I am freaked about it?

How stupid huh!!

I thought that you were referring to an AV fistula at first (hole in the septum of the heart).

I guess they want to put a ring on their nose so they look like an ox

you should see an ENT doc. i work for one and we do see holes in the septum. they occur for different reasons though the most common is because at some point in the patient's life they snorted drugs.(i'm not saying you have) your nose should not be bleeding constantly. if it is dry, use triple antibiotic ointment at night to moisten it and also saline spray (i.e. ocean spray). do you use nasal sprays like afrin? these can make your nose bleed as well as steriod sprays like nasonex. sometimes the septum will repair itself with time but we find many we need to take into surgery to patch.

your bloody nose did not cause the hole in your septum. that's just a symptom of a problem nose. do not blow your nose. i know that's hard but if you keep blowing it and removing the scabbed over part (clot) you will continue to bleed. just use the triple at night, saline spray in the daytime and get yourself to a good ENT to have it evaluated.

My husband has never snorted drugs but has had a broken nose so many times that he virtually has no septum and his nosebleeds can be horrid. He needs surgery to correct, but you know men and going to doctors, surgery, etc, they just will not.
