Osteoporosis Prevention - best workout?

I have been walking 3 to 4 times weekly at 20 minutes. I want to do something else workout-wise, so need to know which DVD/tape you recommend that would be beneficial to me to help reverse my osteopena?

I would recommend Cathe's beginner/intermediate DVDs to you. Do you own a step? If not, you'll have to purchase one in order to do these or any of the majority of Cathe's DVDs. Cathe uses a resistance band besides some light weight dumbbells. You really need to incorporate strength training into your program. Its very important. I'm at medium risk for osteoporosis due to being post-menopausal & my ob/gyn had stressed to me to continue doing my strength training. HTH, Kathy:D

I would recommend Cathe's Pure Strength Series. THere are great form pointers in these workouts and you can start off using light weights. You need to incorporate strength training in order to reverse the osteopena.

Goodluck.

What can be done if you are at risk for osteoporosis if you have already been strength training for many years. I saw a spine rehabilitation doctor last week about my degenerated disc in my lumbar. He said that is was arthritis that caused most degenerating. I am no longer allowed to do squats period. Lunges I can still do with no weight and even then he recommended against them. So for now I'm continuing my upper body workouts and only floorwork for lower body.

So is osteoporosis simply inevitable for someone like me when it runs on both sides of the family no matter how much I strength train?
Very discouraging that my friends would NEVER exercise but at 38 I have exercised for 20 years and am already degenerating. Oh well, I'm still a happy camper since there are far worse diseases to have I realize.
Any advice on helping to combat osteo other than strength training?
Thanks,
Lisa

Hi,
I was diagnosed with osteopena 4 years ago. It was reversed. I take Evista & do weight training, take calcium supplements(usually Avon calcium chews). You will have to find the ones that work for you. I check the desolution of the supplement if it is a tablet by putting it in vinegar to see how quickly it dissolves. 30 minutes or less is good. I was working out at the time I was diagnosed. Do not over do the cardio, 30 to 45 minutes most days is good. Any weight training is good. There are gymnasts that suffer from osteopena.

Hi Diane Sue! My dr. placed me on Actonel but he didn't tell me to use calcium supplements. Now you got me thinking that maybe the Actonel isn't enough. Did your dr. just prescribe the Evista? I have to take Actonel once a week & its 35mg. Did he mention Actonel at all to you? Thanks so much for any help you can give me. Hugs, Kathy :D

Hi Kathy
When my doctor started me on the Evista he told me to take 1200 mg of calcium with magnesium a day. No he never mentioned Actonel to me. He thought Evista was a good choice as I have a history of cancer and family who have had cancer. He said Evista has been shown to help prevent breast cancer in studies.

Thanks so much Diane! I'm very glad to hear of your success in reversing this. I'll ask my dr. if calcium supplement should be recommended for me. Take care, Kathy:D

I've heard that weight bearing exercises are the best for preventing osteoporosis. Aerobic exercise where you are actually on your feet (not cycling) and lifting weights. Heavy weights - leave those soup cans in the cupboard!

I just have a slight bone loss and my dr. recommended weight training, Fosamax, and 1200 mg. calcium daily. I take calcium citrate capsules but am tired of swallowing pills. I looked at the ingredients for Caltrate chews, but it has a lot of sugar and other ingredients in it. Can you tell me what the ingredients are in the Avon calcium chews? Sounds as if it's something I might like to switch to. Thanks!

Avon's Calcium Chews also have sugar and corn syrup in them. They are 20 calories each. The reasons I take them is the types of calcium in them. They are not just calcium carbonate like all of the chews I have seen in the stores. They have calcium carbonate, citrate, fumarate, malate, succinate, & glutamate in them. Also they have vitamin D. They do not cause me to feel nauseated or have the gastrointestinal problems most do. Also I don't have to worry about it dissolving, so the benefits outweigh a little sugar for me. Also I add a magnesium tablet with these as they do not have that.
