Oscar race

My man Johnny Depp has been given an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a lead role, for his work in "Pirates of the Caribbean"!!! When we saw that movie in the theater I said to my daughter he deserves an Oscar for his role! I just love this movie, and I thought his character really made the entire movie. It's so cool to see him nominated, and I know this sounds silly coming from a 46 year old woman, but he is SO HOT!! LOL!!!!

Anyone else have any thoughts on the Oscar nominations?

No thoughts on the Oscar nominations, but I will check out Pirates of the Carribean based on your comments. It looked like a good movie when it came out, but I never got around to seeing it.

My daughter is 14, and I am 44. We both think Johnny Depp is HOT. After seeing him in Pirates, we started renting/buying some of his movies. So far, I've liked Blow, Chocolat, and Donny Brasco. I did not like Sleepy Hollow. Does anyone know of other good Johnny Depp movies? We are REALLY into this!

Wasn't he in a movie called "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" I am not a true Depp fan but he did an excellent job in Pirates of the Carribean.

The first time I saw Johnny Depp was "Nightmare on Elm Street". I think it was the very first "Nightmare" movie. I loved "Blow". If you like weird movies, he was also in "The Ninth Gate" which was directed by Roman Polanski. It was a little strange, but I liked it.

I too love me some JD. Mmmm mmm. Run, don't walk to see "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." Johnny is surrounded by talent in that movie. Leonardo DiCaprio gives the performance of a lifetime in that movie. I highly recommend it.

As far as the Oscars go this year, I am torn. My three favorite actors in the whole wide world are as follows: Bill Murray, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp. Well as fate would have it, all 3 of them are up this year. I will be routing for Bill as I think he gave the most fully realized performance this year. He was pitch perfect. But this is Sean Penn's (another great actor) fourth nomination for best actor and he has yet to win. It's gonna be close.

For actress, I still haven't seen "In America" so I cannot speak for Samantha Morton's acting job, but out of the four performances I have seen, my money is on Charlize Theron because she literally became Aileen.

I usually don't watch the Oscars because they are kind of pretentious and long and boring, but this year I get to see my 3 faves in one room. And in tuxes!!!!!!!

I never saw "Blow", but I'm going to check it out one of these days. I thought "Chocolat" and "Donny Brasco" were really great movies!! I'm so glad I'm not the only one over 40 who thinks he's hot - LOL!! Did you know he's 40 himself? I never realized he was that old. He looks good!!! Think he works out to Cathe? LOL!!

It would be nice to see Bill Murray get an Oscar too! He's given some really funny performances over the years, and comedies almost never get recognized.

I too have always had a thing for Johnny Depp. Another vote for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I thought Benny and Joon was good too, he starred in that with Mary Stuart Masterson and Aiden Quinn. Edward Scissorhands! Let's not forget that one!

And there is one coming out soon - The Secret Window.

MMMMMMMMM. Love Jude Law. He has the most beautiful eyes. Oh, yeah, he's a really good actor too.

I forgot Leonard DiCaprio was in Gilbert Grape. That was a bittersweet movie. Wasn't Juliet Lewis in that too?

They showed a trailer for "The Secret Window" last night during the Super Bowl commercials, and it looks really good!!

Yes Johnny "made" that film and I loved Pirates. Hilarious and thrilling. It's must-see.

I don't have him as a heart throb. Hard to do that after seing him minus eyes in "Once upon a Time in Mexico". But then, no-one really came off well in that movie, even our man Banderas. A lot less of a movie than "El Mariachi".

I am sorry but heart throb status I still reserve for Colin Firth and Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman. But I will add that Jim Carey also gets my vote. I love that guy, even though some movies are a little over the top, making people laugh is still a gift. Anyone see "Bruce Almighty" and not laugh?

I'd be happy to see Johnny or Sean Penn win. But Johnny might have an ironic twist on the whole Oscars thing. Would he forget his outsider principles to accept it?!?!?!?!?

I can't wait to see "Lost in Translation."

Good luck to them all!

Clare

Well, I'm tired of working right now and I love talking about movies so here is my .01 --

I loved Lost In Translation -- it is my choice for best picture. Something about that picture really touched me.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was fine -- but shouldn't have been nominated. I think the previous Lord of the Rings (The Two Towers) was much better.

I haven't seen Seabiscuit or Master and Commander so I can't really comment except to say that the trailers looked boring :)

I was dead tired when I saw Mystic River, so I didn't think it was very good at all. I just didn't feel for any of the characters. I probably should give it another chance.

I thought The Last Samurai was fantastic and was disappointed that it wasn't nominated for best picture. Ditto for In America. I liked it almost as much as Lost In Translation -- very touching.

21 grams had some great performances (Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts) but I wouldn't say that I enjoyed this movie.

Hi Bobbi!! "Finding Nemo" was nominated for a few awards too, including best animated film! I haven't seen it - sadly, Nik is WAY past the Disney/Pixar age ... :( but I've heard it's a great movie!!

Johnny Depp was in a movie called From Hell which was very dark and disturbing (I love those kind of movies) and he played an opium addict in search of Jack the Ripper. I don't know if it would be appropriate for your daughter though!

I only saw Nemo--which I bought for the kids on DVD, and Master and Commander. I hope M&C wins, it was a fantastic movie, but I think its a long shot. I think Mystic River will probably win best picture.

I wonder why Cold Mountain didn't get nominated? It didn't do as well in the box office as they had hoped so that could have something to do with it. With all the turmoil in the world, I don't think people really want to see a depressing movie about war. Which could be the reason why Master and Commander didn't do that well in the box office either! But, I'm glad it got nominated.

O.k, call me weird, but I think that part in OUATIM when Johnny was on his knees, bloody holes where his eyes had been, hair absolutely filthy (I think I saw something moving in it), ready to keel over from exhaustion...was the hottest I have ever seen him. No this is not a joke and no I can't explain it either and yes I have seen quite a few of his films, around 15 of them.;-) I guess I'm just wierd.

I doubt if he works out with Cathe, I read he is trying to quit chain smoking so that he can see his kids grow up...good call.

I thought 'Blow' was pretty good, but he seemed a bit too old for the role. I mean to me he looked older than his mom, and just about 10 yrs behind his dad. I thought Ray Liotta who played Depp's dad in 'Blow' was great!
