Orthotics

Hi everyone

I was wondering if I might need these and was hhoping to get some opinions. After about 10 minutes of exercise the sides of my right foot (only my right foot) start to hurt along the bottoms of the feet. If I loosen the shoelaces a lot if is usually better, and if I turn my feet out a bit. But lately I have noticed it walking too. I am not physically tired when this happens; my cardio capacity is actually decent. Usually I just ignore it and continue. But I am wondering if some kind of insole might make it better or not?

Thanks for any opinions

Joanna

Hi Joanna!

I would have your foot looked at by a podiatrist or orthopedic specialist. I'm not suggesting that this is anything serious but I recommend the check up because you said that you have started to turn your feet out to compensate for the pain. When you start to do things like this, you actually set yourself up for other potential injuries because your body is forced into an unnatural alignment.

If you don't want to get a check up just yet then I would say to take a few days off of your feet to let that pain in your right foot recover. Then try either, new shoes with a wider toe box area, an athletic sock that offers more support, or a combination of both. Ease back in to your program being sure to stop as soon as you feel the first sign of discomfort. If the discomfort does not improve after the third workout, I would strongly suggest getting it looked a by a doctor. Good luck with everything!

Joanna, orthotics are wonderful

i've been on vacation for three weeeks so I haven't been in the forum for awhile. My right arch collapsed from running and I thought high impact activities were over for me. But I saw a poditrist and I wear orthotics and I can do anything now. They are pricy, not covered by insurance but worth every penny!

orthotics & insurance

I have 2 pair of orthotics (one for dress shoes ane one for fitness activites) and both were
covered by my insurance. So check with your
benefits(insurance) department about coverage.

I thot I'd contribute my .02 here as well. My 5 yr old son has an ankle that rolls to the inside - causing him to toe in slightly on the one foot. We took him to an orthopedic surgeon who suggested that we have an insert made for him. (He is in no pain but is very athletic and we didn't want him to have to deal with any weak ankle issues later.) The man at Prosthetics Inc was very helpful and knowledgeable. He told me that because Jonathan is walking in an unnatural way it can also cause low-back problems as well as knee problems. We have submitted to insurance to see if they will cover the insert. BUT - we called 3 different companies for pricing and general info and found that there was a huge discrepancy in price. One quoted $250 per foot and the company we went with quoted $170 per foot (with a 25% discount on top of that if we wanted to pay cash and if insurance didn't help out). I don't trust my baby with JUST anyone, so we questioned the "cheaper" company thoroughly about the lower price. He had the mold made yesterday and the insert will be ready on Thursday. I was surprised at how quickly and inexpensively this issue can be dealt with. Hope the info helps and that your foot feels better soon!!
