Orange roughy

Orange roughy is one of the few fish that I like. It's very mild and has a nice texture, but my local grocery store hasn't had it in stock for months! So I sent an email to their customer service department last week asking if it had been discontinued and how bummed I was because the only other one I really like is halibut (which is very expensive).

So get this...the seafood manager from that store just called me to explain that orange roughy has been severely over-fished and will probably not be available for...10 YEARS!!!!!! And if you do get it, it will be very expensive. There was something about how long it takes that particular fish to grow to the stage where it's acceptable for fishing. Blah, blah, blah...I actually stopped listening after a bit. (I'm rude like that).

So anyway...10 years!!!!! This manager was SO nice. He told me to stop by the seafood department next time I was in and introduce myself. He was going to give me some Tilappia filets for free, just so I could try them. Of course, I've already tried the tilappia. It's good, but not as sturdy as the roughy.

I'm extremely disappointed about the fish, but even more impressed with the customer service of our store. It's Wegmans, in case anyone lives in the Western NY area.

I got some really good Orange Roughy from Sam's club the other day. It was already frozen but still, very good. I don't know if you have one in your area but wanted to let you know where I found it.

Well that explains why I haven't seen it around. It is some good tasting fish. DH use to make it with an orange rub. That's really a shame.

We do have Sam's Clubs. I'm not a member though. You may want to stock up on it the next time you're there. They won't be carrying it for much longer.

This is disheartening I know...I'm an orange roughy fan also. But, I have made the switch to tilapia and really like it. In fact, I just had some for lunch! :) :)

Donna, I dont' like "fishy" fish at all so OR is one I love. However, I have also discovered tilapia, as Jo said. The other one I love and is my current favorite is Grouper. Try one of those-you may be surprised. AND grouper and tilapia are usually cheaper than orange roughy at my store. BONUS!

I've had tilapia a few times, but never grouper. I'll look for it the next time I'm at the store.

What's swordfish like? I got some, but we haven't had it yet.
