Omega-3 Complex storage

Cathlete
I just splurged and bought Dr. Weil's Omega-3 Complex softgels, which, although the label doesn't mention it, probably have some sort of processed fish oil in them. The label says to store in a cool, dry place, but the kitchen cupboard gets pretty hot while I'm at work and the A/C isn't on.

Can any of you scientific Catheites think of any reason not to store the bottle in the refridgerator?

Hi Nancy,

What are those pills suppose to do for you? Or is it just a healthy thing to have in your body? :) Sorry, I can't answer your question, but as far as vitamins go I've never heard that you can't store them in the fridge.

Nancy,

Sorry I can't answer your question either but I'm wondering if you have read any of Dr Weil's books? If so what did you think?

Elaine

Elaine-
I think Dr. Weil is great. I didn't even know he wrote any books, but I subscribe to his newsletter and his advice is always so reasonable. In a world full of health preachers, he's really the only one that I trust for sound, sensible advice.

I'm really glad that he started his own product line, and I'm willing to pay more to be assured of high quality.

Nancy, the refrigerator makes sense as long as you don't use the produce bin with the higher humidity.

I was just about to open this post when I had a nasty "furp" - short for "fish burp" from my fish oil capsules that I forgot to put back in the fridge last night.

I keep my fish oil supplements in the fridge because keeping them cool helps avoid those pesky "furps" -blech. Nothing like the taste of fishy salmon in the morning!

I figure since they come from cold water fish, it can't hurt to keep them in the fridge. Most meds of any kind are best kept at cooler temperatures. Heat will apparently denature protein molecules more quickly than cold - so maybe the same applies for fat or fatty acid molecules. Just a guess - but I think keeping them in the fridge is okay.

I take them and I store them in the fridge. As someone else said, they are a lot easier to get down and I seem to digest them better. I would be interested to know how your body responds. I was part of the Harvard Med School study that published the first results of the benefits of taking Omega-3 supplements.

Hi all,

I use ground flaxseeds instead of fish oils.
I don't know if there is much difference though.
I think it is less expensive than fish or flax oils.
I grind a small amount each time and do refridgerate
both the whole and ground seeds. I usually put a
spoonful on oatmeal or yogurt. It helped to reduce
PMS symptoms and acne for me.

That's great Cindy! I started to use flax seed oil tablets, but then I read that Dr. Weil does not recommend them because they are missing a key ingredient of the flax seed. He says it is better to just have the flax seeds whole, so what you're doing is excellent.

The Weil Omega-3 tablets are the first ones I've tried that don't cause the "furp". So I want to be sure to keep them fresh.

Oooh - I might have to try them as well then. I use "Natrol" Omega-3 supplements and always take them with food. I don't always get "furpy" - but when I do, yuck. It would be worth the extra $$ just to avoid that unpleasant taste.

Joni- there was a thread some months ago in which someone stated that the "furp" means that the oil is rancid. That scared me into switching.
