Older, tougher, smarter

Thanks ladies - but the article is even more interesting! :p I've done centuries before.

I like the idea that proper training can really de-age your muscles. Interesting stuff!

I thought the article was very interesting and very encouraging for someone who will turn 44 in November *points finger at self*

I think things have changed a lot, when I was a kid we were looking at people who were in their 30s as over the hump, not to mention 40s. I don't know if my memory just fails me, but back then people in their 40s would look like Grandmas and Grandpas.

Still cheering for you, how about we do the double century together when we are both 50 :D

I don't really remember looking back and thinking people in the 30's as looking like Grandparents, but I think all kids think adults look old. But I do agree that things have changed. I think we're learning more and more about proper nutrition and exercise. Core training, which is what Dara is heavily into, is proving to be sooo important (I was reading about how important to cycling core strength is - who knew?). It's just amazing what we are learning about how things interact. I will admit, though, that
the 38 yo woman who won the marathon did not surprise. I think the thirties are a really peak age for endurance sports which require stamina both mentally and physically.

But honey, you're my age. We can do that double century in AZ or CA - it would be a blast!! I'd have a lot of fun doing that with you. :D

Thanks for posting the article. I just turned 47 (yikes) on Wednesday but I feel great!! There are so many people in the 60's and 70's that kick my butt at running and it's really something to aspire to. It's nice to know that my muscles are getting younger as well as stronger!!

That's a fantastic article!:D

What is that saying? Your only as young as you feel? I think when you take care of yourself and exercise, eat right you should feel the same at 30 as 50 (though the mirror doesn't always agree) Regardless, you go GIRL!!!

I am very interested to see how this research pans out for those of us who exercise intensely, like Cathe workouts and such, but are not considered 'elite athletes'. It seems the new information and things scientists and exercise physiologists are finding out are being used to best benefit the best athletes, but then the end of the article offered the "same old song and dance" for the rest of us regarding tips and such about exercise.

Is it just that the kind of people interested in tough, challenging workouts, should just continue what they are doing or do you think the trend will be towards more specific tips for us 40+ years-old exercisers regarding the relationship between rest, workout intensity, and performance?

Does this make sense?

That was a great article. If anyone remembers or has done The Firm's Boomer V6, there was an older woman working out. And in the book "Firm for Life", Anna and Cynthia had a blurb about a 70 year old woman working out with The Firm.

I totally agree working out makes one mentally and physically younger.
