Okay Here's an Example of my Flipping Luck!

DH and I bought this house 4 years ago. We bought it with a shed frame and footings but no actual shed. We put off having it completed because of money. Over the summer DH said let's just bite the bullet and get 'er done. So we booked our friend who's a contractor to put it up this fall. He just finished it last Thursday. Guess who shows up at my door an hour ago? The tax assessor!! "We're doing our ten year revaluation," she says. "Mind if I look around for any new structures or rooms?"

THREE days the damn thing has been up. THREE days. I cannot even believe the flipping timing. We should have waited till summer '09.

I wonder if they will try to tax my coop?

Aw Sparrow, if only you'd waited an extra week! :( Yep, the shed's a home improvement & increases the value of your home.

There are lots of factors in a reval though. Maybe if you're lucky you live in the bad part of town where property values have dropped in the last decade. ;):confused:

Sparrow - I wonder if someone tipped them off? Our neighbors are soooo nosy and they're always calling the county offices anytime we do anything to make sure we have a permit. The timing really does figure! Totally my luck! :(

Awww Sparrow - your timing truly doesn't matter. Here's why I say that. I'm on my local Board of Zoning Appeals, and last month our zoning inspector brought in the latest fly-over updates from the Dept of Homeland Security. They do aerial photography of EVERY property and provide local govts with the updates. Soon, this info will be available on local GIS sites for the public to easily pull up.

In our county there are 2 full time employees at the county auditor's office whose only job is to compare these most recent photos from those taken 3 mos ago, 6 mos ago, and 12 mos ago. And from these shots, if any new structures or additions are detected, 2 things happen -- 1. your prop valuation is AUTOMATICALLY increased, and 2. the info is sent to local townships and cities so zoning and building can ensure that proper permits were pulled.

You think you have a reasonable expectation of privacy ANYWHERE? Think again. A number of folks at our meeting last month thought this was really cool technology -- I think it is extraordinarily frightening. Sorry for you.

Sparrow, that just sucks! When you get your reassessment look it over very carefully. The last time we went through this they listed our home as having a basement and it does not. ;)

Don't get me started on taxes! I just got my proposed tax statement for 2009 and our market value dropped $40,500 BUT our taxes only decreased by $88:confused: WTH!!

Nah, no tipoffs. A reval requires inspection of every single property in town. Sadly for Sparrow, it's an external inspection (at least in NJ). :( Should've gone for that new kitchen instead! ;)

We just went through it here. It was hilarious b/c the external inspection of my house revealed a finished basement, a MB suite in the attic & central a/c. None of which exist, the dopes! :p

Actually, it's external AND internal - eventually. I refused to let her in and requested an appointment. I'm sorry but don't show up when I'm in the middle of downward dog and think you can just come in and troop around with your clipboard and measuring tape! So she is coming back on Friday morning. Luckily we've been too broke to do any major internal work, save for painting.

I have to say it creeps me out to have someone from the state walking around my house measuring things and making notes, though the lady was actually very nice. She must know people hate her, poor thing. I was polite in refusing her entry. Though as she walked around the yard I did have a tiny wish that she might step in some chicken poop. The fresh kind. :D
