I'm married to a Buckeye fan. A buckeye is a kind of nut that's poisonous to humans. I believe the logo is a leaf from a Buckeye tree.

Yes, that was a great game! I'm so proud of our team! BronzedGoddess is right. A buckeye is a nut that grows on trees and those are buckeye tree leaves on their helmets. The players receive one for a good play.
Picture a ball of peanut butter dipped in chocolate with a little bit of peanut butter still showing. That's what a buckeye looks like. Yummy! But that is the edible version. (I can post or email that recipe if anyone's interested, but I don't want to tempt people who are watching sweets.)
