AAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! It started yesterday and even after taking ibuprofen overnight, no relief. I don't think it got worse but being that strep throat is being passed around my office and I leave tomorrow for NJ, I am worried :(

Chime in with all of your home remedies please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christine x(

ETA - I may have a slight fever but not sure.

OK, you are going to think I am crazy, but this works everytime for me. Most of my colds last 2 days and they are gone. This is what I do:
I take garlic tablets (natural anti-viral/anti-bacterial properties), Chewable Vitamin C, and Echinacea.

At the first sign of a cold, I take 5 Chew-C and 5 Garlic every 3-4 hours and I take 2 Echinacea every 3 hours for that first day. Usually the next day I wake up feeling fine. But the key is to catch it early. I don't know if you even have this stuff around your house, but if you do, give it a try!!!

Hey Christine,

My son on vacation last week complained about having a sore throat. He also had a fever with it for two days. I looked at his throat and did not see any signs of strep throat. He was better after the two days. I would tell you to keep taking the motrin, but since you have two days before the road trip, you may want to see a doctor to be sure.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!!

I agree with Kim! If you can see a doctor before the trip just to rule out Strep, you should, just because you know it is going around.

RE: Oh no! A Sore throat two days before the road trip...

Get a Strep test done ASAP. As a microbiologist, I know you can get a rapid test done in less than 10 min, either at a doctor's office or a hospital lab. If it's positive, you can get started on an antibiotic, and should feel much better by Friday. (As well as no longer being contagious.)

RE: Oh no! A Sore throat two days before the road trip...

Christine, I agree with getting a rapid Strep test. Another thing to consider is getting a shot of antibiotic. I use to get Strep frequently back in my 20's. I have done it both ways, taken the course of oral antibiotics along and getting a shot and still taking a course of antibiotics, if I remember correctly I believe the course was shorter. The shot get you on the road to recovery faster. Just my 2 cents....

Hey buffettgirl! Of course you are still getting older, but I bet you look a whole lot better than other people your age because you are a health nut! You probably look 5-10 years younger than they do because you do take care of yourself. I did not mean to offend you in any way! That was not my intent, and if I did, I am very sorry!

RE: Oh no! A Sore throat two days before the road trip...

I second the vitamin C. When I start feeling bad I take like 1000 milligrams a day & it usually knocks it out pretty fast.

OK my ears just kicked in and I made an appointment for 11:15. I don't know if my doc has that quick test but I hope that they will give me something to get rid of this so I won't be sick on the road trip. :( Very unhappy...

Robin -

Why thank you! How could I be offended? My husband keeps asking me why I dress "hotter" now at age 50 then I did when I was younger. The answer? Because I look better now! The quote is from a song by my alter-ego and source of my name, Jimmy Buffett.

RE: Oh no! A Sore throat two days before the road trip...

Buffettgirl:
OK. Boy do I feel silly! I did not know that was a song quote, but I do now!!!! Thanks for clueing me in!!!

Timber99:
Keep us updated. Hopefully it will pass and you will feel great for the weekend. Drink a lot of water and make sure you get enough sleep these next few nights!

Be careful. I've been down and out with a nasty stomach flu bug for the last 3 days. There are some bad strains goung around right now. So pay attention to your bodies - we all need to be healthy (or else we have convenient built-in excuses when Cathe kicks our butts this weekend. "I couldn't do those straddle taps because I've been nauseous and ill" :))

I came down with strep the day before our trip to Florida over spring break. I didn't know what it was, and I was determined to go anway. Well, it was strep, and I had to try to wrangle up some antibiotics in a strange town far from home. Tough. Far better to get tested now, get started on antibiotics if necessary, and be raring to go on Friday. Personally, I respond very quickly to anitibiotics, and I felt better every day after I started taking them. You'll be up to Cathe by Friday.

I hope it's nothing, Christine! And it if isn't nothing, get some good meds and rest up!

Lorrie - I don't need those kind of excuses. I'm quite happy saying "I couldn't do those straddle taps because I'm LAME!!!":p

1. Garlic, and lots of it! We won't care if you stink, but we'll hate it if you're miserable! Eat it raw, take the capsules, just get it down.

2. Also, white tea has antibacterial properties and you should down it like you're on the July challenge for at least 64 oz. of water a day.

3. This is going to sound weird, but it WORKS! Gargle with alcohol, the stronger the better (rum, vodka, whiskey, etc.), but wine will work. My mom had a TERRIBLE viral throat infection and she was on antibiotics, but they weren't clearing it up and she heard about this rememdy from a friend and within a day or two her symptoms were remarkably cleared up.
It's worked since for numerous friends an family, just be careful not to eat or drink afterward so that the alcohol environment can kill the bacteria in your throat.

Feel better!

Yes, I am too!

My doc did the quick test and a regular test. She said that sometimes the quick test gives a false reading so they do both in my doc's office. She gave me zithromax and told me to take it right away. The first dose is a double dose so I should actually start feeling better by tonight. Let's hope!

Thanks guys...still going to take your home remedies and use them. Can't hurt to double up on making sure that I am healthy for Friday!

Christine

ETA: My boss just threw me out of my office and made me go home. I am home now on the couch resting :)
