O/T Wisdom Teeth

Carla K

Cathlete
I have to have my wisdom teeth pulled, and I am just wondering what to expect. I am not the type of person that likes to sit still and rest. I have a short attention span. I like to be constantly moving. So I was just wondering how many had theirs pulled, and how long was the recovery?

TIA

Gosh, I had all of mine pulled at once many years ago now. I think I was about 18-19 at the time and now I'm 32...

I don't recall being out of commission for too long...I know was back at work after only a couple of days...I was basically eating baby food, lol, but I was working!

As far as exercise goes, I can't help you there as I wasn't into it at that age...maybe someone else can help you with that.

Have a great work out!

I've had mine pulled. they put me out for it, i believe for most peopl it takes an hour possible two. depends on if they are impacted (in the bone) or not. that first day i felt like crap, cause i couldn't eat in advance, so i felt crummy the rest of the day, plus it kills your jawbone since they have it wrenched open for so long. after that first day i was able to move around, but i believe they recommend not doing too much since they don't want you to pop a stitch or get air in the pouch. it took a couple weeks to be able to eat normal food again (but mainly because 3 of mine were impacted and 1 was partially impacted). it varies by person. most docs will give you an anti-inflammatory drug along with a painkiller, this makes the healing process much better and gets rid of the chipmunk effect. which i had big-time! no anti-inflammatory for me for some reason >.<
anyway, good luck on the surgery! if the wisdom teeth were causing you problems you'll feel much better afterwards!!

I think I took at least one week off working out. I only was born with two lower ones. I'm pretty wimpy and the surgery wasn't bad. I was put under tho. The worst part was dry socktets afterwards even tho I followed all the orders :(

Make sure to use a lot of ice ice ice ice ice...it will really help with swelling. We used small latex gloves and filled them with ice.

I had mine removed when I was about 30. Just had local blocks and mine came out pretty easy. I used bags of frozen peas and corn and wrapped them around my head with a scarf. Wasn't pretty, but did help with the swelling. I only took the pain meds once because they made me vomit:( That was probably the worst part for me!

Removing them was easy with just local freezing. They had to drill away a piece of my jaw bone that was in the way but even that wasn't a big deal. It all went well. I had minimal pain, some facial bruising and it didn't slow me down much...until I got dry socket. That was a nightmare. My face blew up - I thought I was going to get stretch marks on my cheeks!!! Maybe I didn't slow down enough - I followed the other instructions to a T? I was off work for 2 weeks - it would have only been 2 days without the dry socket problem.
Hope it goes well for you.

I had all four of mine removed when I was 21, because I was getting braces. Two had started to drain and get nasty, but the other two hadn't grown out yet. I got laughing gas (because the doctor said that a novocaine shot in the palate is very painful, which I found out later when I had some upper teeth filled), and it was true to its name! I was laughing like an idiot, and the nurse had to leave the room because she started laughing, too! (Better than wetting my pants, which is what someone told me happened to them!). Funny thing is, it didn't seem like the gas actually deadened the pain: I could feel everything, but I didn't care! The doctor could have sawed my arm off with a dull blade, and I wouldn't have cared!

I healed pretty quickly, but was young at the time, and I did a juice fast for the first three days, then a raw diet for a couple of days (it was the 70's, and I was a neo-hippy). When I went back to the dentist, he was amazed at how quickly I was healing.

I've heard of some people getting dry socket, but I don't know about that. Just remember to gargle with salt water like you are instructed to do.

Edited to add: Yikes, I just read some of the other posts! My case was comparatively easy. Just gas, slice, crack and pull. About 15 minutes total.

Thank you ladies for all your knowledge. I love this group. So much info! I kind of know what to expect now. I know I need to get to the grocery store and get some mushy stuff to eat!

I was about 14-15 and was put out. Funny about that--they didn't tell me to "do" anything (like count backward) after the shot, so I'm sitting there thinking.."um..do I count? How am I supposed to know if it's worki....What? It's over!?!"

They were impacted and got dry sockets. Yes swish with the salt water, and take the meds. They only thing I would worry about with exercising is the throb factor, my head can sometimes throb during a work out and I haven't had any teeth out! I think I'd give it about a week like others have said.

I'm sure if you ask the surgeon, he can give you a better idea when it'll be ok to start back up.

Good luck and Good Healing!

Oh the laughing!!! kathryn that reminded me of when i was put out. i was put under with the IV and they told me to take two deep breaths. i took one breath, felt a tickle in my throat, starting cracking up, and then i was out! next thing i know they're waking me up telling me to get in the wheelchair that's inches from me, yet looks more like it's ten feet away!
