NYC/Boston hotel recommendations?

My husband and I are planning a few long weekend vacations, and since I know that some of you are from these areas, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good (read "reasonable") place to stay. For NYC we plan on doing all the touristy things with our kids - American Girl, Empire State bldg, etc - and for Boston, we want to hit a Red Sox game, so whatever would be a good location for that, and also sightseeing.

TIA!

I highly recommend contacting the New York Public library
http://www.nypl.org/questions/

or the Boston Public Library
http://www.bpl.org/

I have a colleague at NYPL and last time I needed some dinner recommendations I received a nifty little restaurant guide (with comments) of the various regions of Manhattan. While you may not get a guide you'll likely get some inside information the folks who live there. You should also be checking at your own public library for travel guides that will contain info on lodging and or course for pricing there's Orbitz and the like.

Tia,

Check out www.travelzoo.com or www.expedia.com. I've found some good deals for New York and Boston hotels there. Also, in New York, I stay in Manhattan, midtown, East side. I usually take the train into Grand Central and use the subway to get around. It will cost you extra to park anywhere in the city.

Have fun,
Pat

A great place in NYC vrey near the places you want to visit is the Essex House Hotel. It is reasonably priced (cheaper than most places of similar qualtiy). It is impecabbly clean, and has a very modern look. The rooms are great. I stay there when I have to stay overnight in NYC. I have been to several other places but this is my fav.

Boston- I like staying at any one of the hotels in Boston that are situated near Copley Place. They include a Marriott and I forget the other two. They are linked through a great shopping center with lots of great stores and restaurants. Be forewarned, Boston hotels can be sold out over a month in advance and so book early.

Have fun.

I've stayed at the Red Roof Inn Manhattan - it's clean, comfortable, and rates are reasonable by NY standards. http://www.applecorehotels.com/red-roof-inn-manhattan/ It's on 32nd between Broadway and Fifth Avenue, so it's within walking distance of the theaters, Times Square, Empire State, Macy's, etc.

My favorite Italian restaurant is 44SW on the corner of 9th & 44th. It's a mom and pop place...cozy atmosphere...delicious food...and killer Long Island Iced Teas! Here's a menu: http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?neighborhoodid=0&restaurantid=3661

You can also find good recommendations for accommodations as well as sightseeing tips on Tripadvisor.com The forums there are extremely helpful.

Here is a link to a Marriot hotel in Boston that my brother stayed at recently with his family and thought was fine. He travels frequently. My family and I have reservations there in the near future. I believe we paid 139.00 per night - mid week. This is my first trip to Boston so I can't give you any particulars but the hotel is listed as near Fenway. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/BOSSO
