Nutella

I'm with you, JeanneMarie! Although I will admit to enjoying the extraordinarily occassional Nutella crepe, I find the stuff just too sweet and gooey for my taste. If they had a low-sugar version I might me more inclined to enjoy it. It may be good on granny smith apple slices though. hmmm
I can easily pass it right by.

My husband brought this back after being stationed in Germany and I thought - hmmm, chocolate, nuts, what could be bad about this? Sad to say, I don't like it, just a little tooooo sweet for me..

Now give me some of that Harry and David flavored peanut butter (banana flavor please) and I'll race you to the bottom of the jar!

And then go do IMAX3 for punishment :)

1. Yes, Nutella can be good for one thing: getting a very, very fussy kid to eat something other than sugar-cereals for breakfast. I make homemade 100% oatmeal/whole wheat bread, and if I put Nutella on it, she eats it. I figure it makes a better breakfast than Fruit Loops.

2. Nutella is the creamy stuff that is inside Ferraro Rocher chocolates.

3. Is Nutella unavailable to buy in the US?! It's easy to find here in Canada.

4. A month ago I pulled a recipe for a home made version off the internet. I really liked it, but it didn't come out as smooth and creamy as the jarred version, so the kids won't eat it. It used icing sugar for the sweetener. I was supposed to use hazelnut oil in with the roasted, ground hazelnuts, but couldn't find it anywhere. So I subbed roasted peanut oil. The peanut oil is very overpowering for the hazelznuts, so I would make it again using a milder oil.

5. When I was a kid, only my friends who had parents from Holland got to eat Nutella for breakfast. I, too, figured it was a European thing, and was soooo jealous of the kids who got to eat chocolate for breakfast!! Those kids also got to put chocolate sprinkles on their morning toast...another European thing, I believe?

Cheers,
Sandra

Luv this stuff!!

It's great on cinnamon toast. But, the way I usually eat it is on apple slices!! BTW: Peanut Butter is good on apple slices too. Actually a good filling low carb snack...

My youngest son loves it with peanut butter on wheat bread (we got that idea from my French girlfriend & haven't looked back since). I've tried it, but it's TOO good so I don't allow myself that treat.

Of course, the best way is in a crepe in France!

Nutella is not allowed in my house. I would eat the whole jar in one sitting no matter the size. In Italy it's generally not given to kids for breakfast. It's an afternoon snack, a meal called "la merenda" and always spread on a slice of bread. When I was in my mid twenties I spent a summer in a country home with quite a few other friends. One women had a three year old and we bought the smallest jar available for his merenda. We told him he could only have it with bread. After he went to bed the adults finished it off eating it straight out of the jar. Every day we bought bigger jar and every night the adults finished it off. The poor little kid still only got the one slice of bread with just a smear per day.

Sandra, Nutella is widely available in the US, unfortunately. :D

Oh yeah, I've been putting chocolate chips on toast for as long as I can remember. I like to make grilled PB and chocolate sandwiches, too. YUM!!! I've never made a grilled Nutella sammy, but I'm sure that would be GREAT! I don't bring it home very often because I just can't stop eating it.

My newest food love affair is with a product from Spain called Ficoco. It's like a jam made with figs and cocoa. OMG!!!!!
