Northern Road Runners

Hey Ladies...I love running outdoors, usually around 8K so I'm out for about 50 minutes. Up until this fall I have been a fair weather runner and stayed indoors for the winter. I want to keep running outdoors this coming winter and wondered what works for you with regard to layering, fabrics, shoes, (do you get special shoes for winter?) and any tips you've found to keep cooold and frosty weather running pleasant. TIA!:)

Hey Laurie!! I run in the cold temps and for me the most important thing is a good pair of running tights!!! I have a pair of Nike dry-wick that I've had for 2 winters now and they are awesome! I think I paid less than $50 for them & they were well worth it!. I'm usually fine in shorts down to about 40 degrees (I am always sweaty once I start running!), then I wear the tights. For tops, (all dry wick) I will either layer a tank, long sleeve, and light jacket and always gloves & a headband wrap. I'll do 2 pairs of socks if needed also (since my running shoes are mesh, they don't keep my toes very warm.) Usually a pair of dry wick socks & then a thicker pair of socks work for me.

Hope that helps, I actually love running in the colder temps. The coldest I ran was negative 2 and once I was running & sweating, my hair froze!!! It was hilarious!

Laurie - I'm the one you see out there running in a blizzard! I must prefer running in snow to running in humidity.

I use my normal shoes. And layers. Lots and lots of layers. I hear that Underarmour stuff is fabulous but haven't tried any yet. I usually do a light tankish top or t-shirt covered by a long sleeve shirt, both made of some kind of wicking fabric whose name escapes me right now (I think Adidas calls it Climalite?). Then a lined running jacket on top of that. I always wear a scarf over my face when I start out. Hat or headband, lightweight gloves, running tights and windproof pants over top. I wear my regular socks and make sure the running pants are tucked into them.

I hope that helps! I've run in 20 below in that get-up before and been just fine.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the windproof pants over the tights when it's really cold!! Yep, the wicking material makes all the difference!!

Another cold weather runner here, I've run in minus 25 (celsius that is) but not so much the last couple of winters as my asthma doesn't like the exercise/cold weather combo. I usually do the tights with a sports bra/ tshirt/ windbreaker, mitts and scarf.

Hi Laurie,

I walk/jog 5 miles at night with two friends. I live in NJ so it's getting cold here too. My husband wanted me to treat myself to some Under Armour as a reward for my recent weight loss. I bought the Frosty Tights, the SubZero Mock, the Velocity Half Zip Jacket and the Artic Headband. I have to say I am so comfortable! It makes being out on the cold nights so easy and I can tell I will be fine even as it gets colder. I really want to stick with my outside workouts through the winter. The items were a little expensive but I will wash and wear these four pieces all winter. If it keeps me working out then I think it will be worth it! I hope this helps you in your search.

The only thing that really bothers me is if my ears/face is cold. I have a band that I wear aroud my ears. Not sure what those are called. LOL I then wear a sweatshirt on top of my clothing and put the hood up and tie it. That seems to keep the upper body good. Now I get really hot running and I can wear just my running pants and be fine. I don't have any tights or anything like that. I might have to look into it. I also wear my gloves to keep my hands warm. Just did 6 miles today in the strong winds were were having and I didn't feel a thing! :)

Hi Laurie!
The Under Armour gear ROCKS! I initially bought some of the cold gear tops for skiing but wound up using them for cold runs, too. They keep you nice and warm and are worth the extra moolah. Layering is the key. Depending on the temp, I'll do a wicking fleece top (over the UA) with windbreaker jacket that zips up to cover my neck. Since my legs heat up fast, I just wear regular long tights (but if it's really cold, I'll wear my ski warmup with wind pants over top) along two pairs of socks. Gloves and a headband to cover the ears.

Great stuff ladies, thanks so much! I am loving running in this weather it's so refreshing and allows the energy to keep flowing. I was out yesterday and ended up taking off my long sleeves and finishing my run in a tank and capris, thought it was kind of funny that all around me were people in jackets and I'm happily sweating half dressed in November, no wonder folks think we runners are CRAZY.}(
