nordic track spin bike 399.00

Well, I ordered it. I looked at other ones but was not sure about the neg.feedback on some. This is one I didn't find much negative comments on. I can't wait for it to come!
For those of you that have this bike already how do you like it? Is there resistance? Is the resistance adequate for dvd workouts? What dvd's would be good to use until Cathe's arrive? I think I might get Mindy's Tricycle. Any other good ones to use?
So excited!

Sweaty mess!

I just finished my 1st workout on my new spin bike. I chose the 30 minute Tricycle flat ride and loved it! Man, that was tough! I'm sweating buckets!! I'll have to get used to the seat. I may end up moving myself a little closer to handlebars as I felt I was too far from it. Overall, thumbs up for my new bike! It wasn't too loud (but I did have to turn the volume up louder than usual) and it didn't make any funny noises or anything. It was easy going back and forth with the settings (making resistance harder, etc).

Okay, off to shower again.....

Thanks again for the tip on this bike! Glad to have it in my collection.

Hi Denise,
Great to hear that your first ride on the new bike went well! I can definitely relate to being a "sweaty mess" when done.

Feebee- The only spin DVD that I have so far is Mindy Mylrea's tricycle.I really like this DVD --it is filmed in the great outdoors --is a little goofy (which reminds me NOT to take myself too seriously!) and has been a good introduction to spinning.

Also, to answer your other question...there is definitely resistance on the bike and you will have no problem adjusting it. Let me know how you like the bike and which DVDs you decided on!

glad you are liking your bike. Mindy is definitely one of the best out there so you picked some good DVDs to start. she also mtn bikes so she gets cool points for that!

i took a spin class this morning after several, several wks off & it reminded me how much your shins get worked, too. soon as it gets warm I ride outside more, but I am going to keep hitting the classes a couple times a wk to keep that conditioning up. the faster cadence in the warm up songs & (usually) the first couple songs I really feel it in my ant tib but it fades once I get more warmed up.

why am I bringing this up? just an FYI for people who may be new to spinning/cycle workouts. they are SO GREAT and really burn the kcals, but just be patient with your body as it acclimates. you will feel muscles work in a different way and just stick w/ it and all will be good!

My bike arrived today and they even brought it inside for me. I just need to wait for my kids to get home to help me get it downstairs and set up! I can't wait! Mindy DVD should also be coming today! Maybe I will be able to try both out yet tonight! I will let you know how I like them :)

Spin Bike Resource

I posted this in another thread but I think it's a useful link:

Here's a link to Jeff Wimmer's site. He is the go to tech guy for all things Spin / Indoor Cycling for the last 20 years. He's literally wrote the manual for supporting this equipment.

He has product reviews, videos, support and much more info on his site...take a look around. He offers invaluable info on buying a spin bike and tells it like it is regarding the good/bad features on a bike whether beginner to advanced in knowledge on riding and maintaining your bike :D

http://www.biketekusa.org/cool_stuff/

Whether you purchase from him or not this site has much to offer.

Hi Ladies:

I am very excited to hear that Cathe is including a cycle max with her new low impact series.
I have been spinning now for a couple of years on the spinner pro from spinning.com and have all of their DVD's ranging form 30 min, 45 min and 50 min. Josh Taylor, master instructor is my favorite and he really gets that HR up. I noticed that some ladies mentioned the discomfort of the bike seat. I have a gel seat along with the padded bike shorts which has really saved my behind. I purchased the padded bike shorts from www.spinning.com best thing I ever purchased). Now that I will be turning 65 in September I can attest to spinning helps with the old joints and less jar to my fragile bones. Cathe is the best.

That's awesome Denise! Remember the first three times you spin (if you're a newbie), your crotch area gets VERY tender (the bone area feels a little ouchie), until you get acclimated. Then that goes away for good....unless you take a long break from your bike in which you have to start your acclimation all over again. Hey, it's good incentive to stick with your program, right? :D

That is the perfect incentive for sticking to the program, "no more tenderness" ;)! I think I'll add a few rides (at least 3x a week) to get used to it so I can get real good at it. Then you can really get me good with Cycle Max!!

My DS, who is almost 15, put it together for me. I tried out the Mindy Tricycle DVD and chose the flats. I really enjoyed the workout. My sit bones were very sore at the end!
I really like the bike. I am short, only 5'2". I can't get any closer or lower and I think only a smidge more would be best for me, oh well, I'm close enough! Overall I like the bike very much! It is quiet, I did have to turn the volume up a bit but I am quite a distance from the TV! No strange noises and everything seems fine, not loose in any way.
I switched seats today with my DD gel bike seat. It used to be my bike and I loved that seat! I am off to work out. I will post how I like that seat better.

Hubby and I did TriCycle today. We chose the Interval Workout and man we were drenched! I was so proud of him! He used his recumbant bike and did a great job with his prostethic leg. He wants to keep doing this with me several times a week. This ride was easier on the "bottom" for me and I loved it! I love my new bike! Two thumbs up!

Now I can't wait for Cycle Max...hubby and I are already trembling in fear, ha!! ;)

It is so awesome that you and your hubby are doing this together! I have never been able to get my husband to workout with me. He would rather go to the gym. Oh well. But....great news on your bike. I am so glad you love it. I would have felt guilty (having posted the orginal announcement) if you didn't!

I am also looking forward to cycle max....in an about to be humbled sort of way!

Hi Feebee,
I am so glad you like the bike! I am 5'2" as well and wish I could also be a smidge closer, but otherwise I find the bike comfortable except that I could use more padding on the seat. Could you post more details about your gel seat?

Hi jenb69_1999,
I tried out an old gel seat made by Bell. All the soft velvet coating is worn off but it is now just smooth nylon like fabric so it works just fine. I found it at Fleet & Farm at least 4 yrs ago. It is nice and wide, and very cushy. I bought a Schwinn air seat for my daughter at Shopko for about $20.00. I am hoping she won't notice. I did try this out first on my spin bike but didn't think it was cushy, it was kind of hard. So I switched the air and the old gel seat. I really like my old gel seat by Bell. I did Intervals on Mindy's Tricycle with the gel seat, and I was hardly sore at all, at least my sit bones were not sore! What a difference between air and gel! I have not looked anywhere to find a new gel seat yet. I won't need to if my daughter doesn't notice!
I like my spin bike and am enjoying the workouts! Hope this helps.

The Bell Soft Tech gel seat we picked up for around $25 or less at Walmart is great. It is narrow shaped like a regular spin bike's seat but the added gel really helps. It also has the hole in the middle of the seat which helps. When hubby adjusted the bike and seat for me after my 1st ride (which I'm short too, 5 foot 3 inches tall), it made all the difference for me for my 2nd ride! I didn't feel any soreness in the crotch area the next day (yeah) after my 30 minute TriCycle ride with Mindy. I really think having a gel seat helps with cushioning. (and any little bit helps!!)

Hey Jen. I had awful plantar faciitis (my feet are nearly flat) and tried everything, including annoying and expensive orthotics. Since I live in tennis shoes I decided to see an athletic shoe specialist and I've been wearing the New Balance 1226 series (the last number goes up every year, when the shoe is cosmetically re-designed) for years. It fixed my hyper pronation and as long as I buy new shoes regularly I don't have any issues. When you first get corrective shoes they hurt for a few days as you get used to them - but you will and they're so worth it. I can't say enough about seeking out shoes that address your specific foot issues. Good luck.

Hi SirenSongWoman,
Thanks for the tip! I have been getting quite frustrated with my foot! I have had plantar fasciatis for a couple of months now. I also have annoying expensive orthotics (I HATE moving them from shoe to shoe). Consequently, I have also been living mostly in tennis shoes, which I normally don't mind except here in Florida they get hot in the summer. I really want to wear sandals again. Some of the orthotic types run as high as 140.00 per pair (eek!).

Anyway, I am supposed to start physical therapy on Monday for my foot, but in the meantime I will definitely research the New Balance shoe you mentioned. BTW, where do you find an athletic shoe specialist? And how long were you wearing these shoes before you could comfortably do high impact exercise again?

Thanks for the advice!
Jennifer

Hey Denise,
Thanks for the tip on the gel seat! I will be checking it out as soon as I can get to Walmart!

Nordic Track Spin Bike

Thanks so much for the info on the spin bikes and cycling DVDs. :) This week, Nordic Track is offering free shipping on the GX3.0. I REALLLLLLY want a spin bike, but I don't think I want to spend @ $1K+, so I'm leaning heavily toward purchasing this model. The video demo on the NT website is helpful, as it shows all the adjustments that can be made quickly and simply to suit the rider's reqs. Even though I have a dedicated gym room in my home, I must say that I like the idea of the transport wheels on the bike. It's good to know that you can easily stow it away or move it to another location in the home, should the need arise. Thanks again for the info! Happy cycling! :)

Jen, an "athletic shoe specialist" is just a fancy term for shoe salesman with a clue! You don't have to talk to one for more than a few minutes to figure out whether or not your guy knows his product. The first New Balance guy I got REALLY did. Right away he was like "YOU are a serious overpronator." He had me walk and was first to point out how much of my foot touches the floor. He talked a lot about my specific biomechanics. I asked for him the next time I was in the store and found he'd been fired for embezzlement... You just never can tell. Anyway...

My ART practitioner is a marathoner and, though I love MY shoe, she cautions that people with foot issues should go to a store that doesn't sell just one brand (and feet change). Her partner, another overpronator, wears Brooks. So, by all means, check out MY shoe, but try other brands also designed for your particular issue. Really sucks to have to select shoes based on which can best camouflage your inserts, especially with sandals!
