No Sweets Check-In - June 21, 2005

Happy Summer everyone!

Bobbi - wipe that chocolate off your face, woman! And in answer to your question, I do two types of shortcake - either the sweet biscuit kind, or an angel food cake kind (split the cake in half, fill it with whipped cream - NEVER Cool Whip - and berries, and then berries and cream on the top.

Well, it's Tuesday, which is usually biscuit day. Didn't get one last week because the boss was sick. Thank goodness for that. He's out at a meeting this morning, so maybe he won't bring one today either. I can only hope:)

Bobbi - eat some chocolate for me today. I am so proud of myself. I averted diaster last night and owe it all to being able to vent my feelings here. Though I didn't have a bag of my beloved Dove Darks, I did have a bunch of bananas which I could have easily peeled one by one with a jar of PB and a knife in the other hand. About 8:30, I made myself a cup of Chamomile tea and went to the bedroom with my book (on nutrition no less) and forbid myself to go back to the kitchen.

I am feeling so pleased with myself today, the urge to binge is less. I'm sure it will rear its ugly head again but I conquered it one day and am ready for the next.:) :) :)

Shelley - what is your recipe for that sweet biscuit to go with the strawberries? Also, I make a strawberry pudding that is similar to banana pudding, just make it with strawberries. It is very good.

Happy First Day of Summer!

9 more days!

How tempting to reach in the Oreo bag and have "just one". Had some pineapple instead - that satisfied the sweet craving.

Shelley - in high school, I used to eat Cool Whip by the bowlfuls!!!

Angie

Jane - get yourself a box of Bisquick. On the side of the box is a recipe for strawberry shortcakes and it is SOOOOOO good! :9 I don't know if Shelley's recipe is similar, but I love this one! I confess that I add a little more sugar to the batter than they call for, and I also sprinkle in some cinnamon and nutmeg. Oh yeah - that's the stuff!

Last night, DH wanted to go to DQ to get a Blizzard. He aske me if I wanted one, and without even having to think twice about it, I said "No, I don't really want one." I can't believe those words came out of my mouth, and it was like an automatic response! Woo hoo! Go me! :D

I'm out of chocolate and I'll stay away from Trader Joe's until July 1, I promise. The cupcakes are all gone too. It was the cupcakes what done me in! I don't even like white cupcakes because they are not chocolate. Oh, well, that's the way the ball bounces, the cookie crumbles.

Jane, psst. I have a confession to make. I never feel very guilty about this chocolate thing of mine since I have discovered that Trader Joe's carries several varities that are 70% or more cocoa. That's practically like taking a vitamin! I must need the anti-oxidants in a desperate fashion. Don't want to suffer any free radical damage, now do I? It is funny, not ha ha funny, that The Stash is gone and all I can think about is chocolate. When I'm stocked, I can eat just one or even none and be happy as the cat that ate the canary. What's up with that?

Otherwise, all I have injested today is coffee which is another love of mine but only very early in the morning so I don't stay up all night longing for chocolate. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! Isn't PMS ugly?

Good morning everyone,

Survived yesterday with no sweets and this morning had my usual whole grain wheat waffles with a bit of sf syrup. today I feel like I will have the willpower of a bull.

Hey shelley resist that biscuit girl and freeze it until july. I think you said you had done that. You are doing great!

And jane see you look the other way with the chocolate dove.

I think everybody is doing a fantastic job with the sweets deal. I know it has helped my out a great deal.

Hey Emily,

My first slip up this month was a DQ blizzard. I am a sucker everytime. But I guess it will be easier to turn away this time. So I commend you for turning that down.

Way to go!!!

I would slip up for a German chocolate Blizzard! Good thing I don't know where DQ is around here. :)

This challenge is getting easier since there's only 9 days left. My XSO will be out of town for my birthday so I won't have a cake. And the last few days, I've been so busy I haven't had time to dwell on all the sugary goodness I'm missing out on.

You're all doing a terrific job!

Bisquick! My mom used Bisquick for strawberry shortcake. I hate to be a party pooper but, guys, it poison. It's so refined, a dollar says sugar, table sugar, not that diabolical high fructose corn syrup we should all avoid like the plague, seems like health food. Think about it, it's from the same woman who gave the world Hamburger Helper. Betty Crocker. Bah! Now I have to find out if it has any fiber and how much sweetener it contains but, ewwww! My blood sugar shot up just thinking about it!

I too survived another day. The end is near so I agree that helps. Good luck and good job everyone. Even those who slip up go right back to the challenge. We are ALLL doing so well.

Bobbi, I too love the dark, more than 70% cocoa chocolate. I could care less for milk chocolate. It is good for you but in moderation. Chocolate and moderation aren't even in the same state where I am concerned!!

Emily/Shelley - Thanks for the Bisquik idea, I have a box of the reduced fat in my frig. Bobbi, I'm afraid I don't follow as clean an eating pattern as everyone here. I am just now learning what "clean eating" means. Foods in their natural form, no processed stuff, right? I do eat tons of fresh fruit and vegetables. I eat Natural Own wheat bread because it has a low calorie count.

And alas, I am guilty of consuming huge quantities of Splenda, Equal.... I don't eat refined sugar or at least try to minimize it. I guess I need to start working on these things... but one thing at a time.

I have actually lightened up since my orthorexic days. Who would have thought you could have a diet that was TOO clean? But I AM a lousy baker efen with mixes. And I'm obsessed with fiber and trans fats. Bisquick is corn starch, mostly. Dextrose, which is 70% as sweet as sucrose. And I honestly eat anything that strikes my fancy because I don't have a well defined sweet tooth. I tend to crave salty, crunchy foods like chips. I read that it's the crunch that's really longed for and celery is just as good a potato chip. That may very well be true. If it's dipped into Ranch.

Dark chocolate is the most wonderful thing on earth.

My kids did not fnish their chocolate chip cookies (with the chunks!) and I did not eat what was left! I was also offered an extra potato wedge at lunch and I turned it down (I had 2 already!).

Someone told me that it takes 21 days to form a habit, so today we have officially formed a habit!! Does it feel like it to you? I think that it feel that way for me!!

EE

No sweets today, no overwhelming urges to eat anything not nailed down, so far. If I can eat supper, then make it to bedtime without snacking, then I'll be home free.

Way to go, EE!!!

You're right - they do say 21 days forms a habit - and this is definitely a healthy habit to keep!

Angie

You can do it, Jane! I have found that after supper is when cravings hit the hardest. I have been trying to keep busy and stay busy until it's time for bed.

Angie

Went all day without sweets and fixing to have supper and hope those munchies don't haunt me tonight. You're right if you don't stay busy at night, it leaves you to munch. Nights are when I calm down and watch tv with the family. I was munching on grapes so much last night that I finally had to drink water to satisfy my urge. My body might have need water and I just thought I was hungry.

Hope all of you had a good day and a good night!
