No Sweets Check-In - June 10 2005

Happy Friday everyone! Day 10. Wow! Who would have thought 10 days with no sweets? We ROCK!

I had such a crappy drive home last night (what's normally 40 minutes took me an hour and a half) that I was sooooo tempted to eat a cookie when I finally got home! But I did Bootcamp instead. MUCH more satisying:)

Wait, let me get this straight... you WANTED a cookie. But then you did Bootcamp instead. What kind of a trade-off is that??? Are you mad??? ;)

Okay, I have to confess that DH stopped at Dairy Queen last night and brought me home a Blizzard (gee, isn't he sweet?). My original plan was only swearing off baked sweets so the Blizzard wasn't completely off-limits, but I wanted to really limit all sweets as much as I could (and I think I've been doing pretty darn good!). So I only ate half of the Blizzard. But I wish I hadn't eaten any of it. *hangs head in shame* :(

Today is a new day, and I will do just fine, like I have done previous days. :D

Hi shelley,

Yes it is day 10 and it feels good to be accomplishing something good for you. Even though I have had one little mistake, I am really motivated with this challenge. I can't believe I'm not sneaking my kids snack foods. Yesterday I wanted some of the oreos that my kids had, but I opened the fridge and pulled out a few grapes. I was proud of my will power.
This morning I've had my whole grain waffles with a bit of SF syrup. This challenge is getting a little bit easier day by day. I know all of us will do a good job at this today.

did you know they had SF and whole grain bread? I had no idea there was a such thing. I bought these hamburger buns to go with our lean hamburgers. It was really good. I also bought the loaf bread. Wow! it is a great thing. My son says I didn't know bread had sugar in it anyway.

I feel that my coughing fits yesterday exempted me from the two cough drops I had. }( So far so good on the sugar!

Laurie Mac

I agree Laurie. Hope you feel better.

Shelley, that's the one thing I definitely don't miss(commuting) about working.

Yesterday was OK, but lot of temptations. We went to a ginormous pool party and there were sweets everywhere. I stayed busy chasing my little guy, so I have him to thank. Today we're going to my dh's very Greek aunt that thinks sugar and carbs are a food group! She makes every thing from scratch. Mmmm, so good. :9 I'll have to eat before I leave. My ds was already talking about her bread at breakfast!

Wish me luck!

Oh yeah, I'm getting Chrismated into the Greek Orthodox religion this weekend. So, I'm getting permission now to celebrate with my family. I'll even split something with my dh, that's what we do anyway. Pretty please. I haven't touched the chocolate since PMS started!

Dallas

Emily - I admire your willpower to stop at 1/2! Those Blizzards are sooooo yummy....they're one of my favorite treats.

I was eating a Go Lean protein bar last night for dinner until I saw that it had 31 grams of sugar in it!!   So I ate half and put the other half away. That's a lot of sugar. I'm amazed that sugar is found in so many foods that we wouldn't expect. I didn't know that bread had sugar, either.

We are officially 1/3 of the way through our June Challenge!!

Angie

Evily - yes, I know, it's a strange trade-off. But it worked. Kept me away from the cookies, and later I had watermelon instead:)

Dallas - you definitely have special dispensation for your ceremony and celebration! It's kinda like a birthday, right?

Angie - I checked out protein bars after you told me about how good they were a couple of weeks ago and was HORRIFIED at how much sugar and calories they have! I didn't buy any.

Yesterday was really tough for me. I did SB and then S&H Chest and Back and something about mixing heavy weights and cardio always makes me ravenous! And crave sugar, boy howdy did I ever! Emily, I totally feel you on the Blizzard b/c the local icecream place makes a killer low-fat peanut butter frozen yogurt (that I love with sprinkles in a baby cone!) and that was what I was really craving last night. I even had my DH call to get the nutrition facts for it, but all they could tell him was that it only had half a gram of fat, no sugar or calorie content so I managed to resist. But I had fruit salad with Stevia sweetened silken tofu topping and later tofu stevia/cinnamon toast instead. Today I've been much better I am looking forward to trying beets for the first time in tonights salad:9
Just an interesting aside, has anyone else noticed that their toothpaste tastes sweeter since we've been doing the no sweets thing?
Mattea

Yes! I noticed that this morning! That's crazy, isn't it? I guess it's like noticing how salty some things can be when you cut back on your sodium!

I stopped into 7-11 today and they had bearclaw pastry samples sitting right out in the open with toothpicks already in them. So easy to eat, but I thought of you guys and resisted the temptation! Thanks! Normally I would have popped one (or two) saying to myself "it's just a little bite" but the "no-sweets June" kept me on the right path.

We really NEED to do this every month!

GO-OO-OO GIRLS!

Have you noticed that I haven't been checking in?? x( I haven't done very well the past couple days- I'm too embarressed to tell you about Wednesday's dinner- think baked goods. I will share that I made the poor choice to eat due to emotional distress and PMS Thursday afternoon. I ate 2 mini- Hershey bars with nuts- didn't taste that great, what a waste!. I also ate about 3 T of mini M&Ms- now THOSE were yummy.

I tried to behave Thursday afternoon- I really did. But I was set up for failure by not eating enough calories early in the day and letting myself stew over my youngest sister's poor life choices. A very bad combination, indeed. }(

I'm back on the wagon, again, though. I'm going to really work hard to stay true to this challenge until July 1. I just might end up staying up until midnight on the 30th to devour some yummy baked good- but I'm going to keep myself in check until then. :p :9

Next weekend I'm going to Six Flags with my sister (the other one, the one with her head on straight lol). I'm so excited!! I'm also dreading it a bit knowing that clean food will be hard to come by...and sweet temptations will abound. I think I can handle staying away from sweets....I'll focus on that and do my best to control portions and seek out clean eats.

Thanks for the motivation, inspiration and support! ;)

Connie

Hi Kim,

Great job staying away from your kids' snacks!!

I've been buying the wg sf bread for a long time now, it's wonderful! I even got my mom and stepdad to make it their "regular" bread. That's a big deal! Glad you found some. ;)

Connie

Now that I know I can live without sweets, I am trying to clean up the rest of my diet - that is a bit more challenging for me.

Hang in there girls...the weekend is here and it will bring plenty of temptations!

Tammy

Congrats on making it thru the pool party sugar-free!! That's a true accomplishment. ;)

This might sound really weird, but I've always wanted to be from a Greek family- or marry into one. I think the whole culture is so fascinating! I go to the local Greek fests, but it's not the same. The food is wonderful, though. hehe

Connie :D

Yikes, that is alot of sugar for a "health food" bar. I recently found a Kashi bar that I really like- it's whole grain and only has 6 grams of sugar- and it's not corn syrup it's brown rice syrup. It's even got a bit of fiber and protein. And it tastes pretty darn good. Maybe you can look for those... :)

Connie

I am really pi**ed off right now. With that resulted in eating some barbecue potatoe chips. I am so mad at myself. I know it is not sweets but I have been staying away from junk food.My sister-n-law made me so mad that I just emotionally eat. I can't believe I can let family affect me that mad. But maybe I'll post this and discuss it.

I know I will do better the rest of the day.

kim

Ok Day Ten! Last night was so hard for me. I wasn't feeling well and nothing healthy I ate had any taste to it. So I wanted something sweet sOOO bad! I went to the freezer to see if I had anything sugar free that was sweet and guess what I found? A big bag of star wars dark peanut m&m's! My son had left them here I guess from the night we saw star wars. I was very tempted and paced back in forth in front of the frig. I finally talked myself out of it by reminding myself IT"S JUNK TERRI! That and they had never been opened so if my son comes to get them he will know I ate some:) He also knows about me being on the challenge for June:) I will be seeing him ronight at his BD party and I am taking him that darn bag! Ok sorry I got off on a rant here:( Anyway I wish everyone the best and have a great weekend.

Terri

Conni and Kim - Kudos for recognizing that your craving for sweets are stemming from emotions! I think that's the best way to deal with cravings is recognizing where it's coming from and either alleviating the problem or finding another way to funnel your emotions. Don't beat yourself up - tomorrow's another day and you'll do great!

Terri - way to resist, girl! It's tough, isn't it? Especially when it's RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.

My boss is handing out mini oatmeal chocolate chip cookies so I grabbed an apple and I'm munching on that until (hopefully) everyone else eats them. Well, there's another girl not eating them because she's losing weight for her wedding so I guess I'm not alone.

On a side note: I was just in a meeting with my boss and her boss and the big boss mentions that she stops at McDonald's EVERY DAY on her way home from work and gets an ice cream cone.    I bit my tongue.

Angie ~ I know I'm starting to realize how much sugar is in stuff, too. I was about to take a drink of my sons lemonade last night and looked at the sugar 40g in one can! I didn't even want a drink then. I also purchased some trail mix protein bars and they have 23g. Do you still think that is too much? Oops, do those count? I usually will grab one after my work out because I work out on an empty stomach.

Connie ~ what are your health bars called? I'd like to try those. The pool party was kind of tough, but my kids went from the pool, jumping thing, to back by the DJ and then repeating the cycle. So I was really too busy trying to keep my eyes on all three. And there's something about eating sweets standing around in my bathing suit! LOL! Be careful what you wish for "marrying into a Greek family" LOL! I love my dh's family to death, but did you see the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding....oh, it's so true. I have to say my dh's family has way more class than the family in the movie. However, you can't make a move without the whole family knowing! The food is wonderful!

Nadine ~ you're right, I've been resisting more because I think of all of you and this challenge.

Terri ~ way to go resisting the m&m's. I don't know if I could have done that one.

BTW ~ I made it through our lunch with my dh's aunt. She has actually started working out to Denise Austin, so it was a healthy meal. Grilled pork shish kabob, tomatoe cucumber salad, fruit salad, and that famous bread. I told her I was so proud of her. I resisted the frosted brownie dessert. That was soooooooo hard. She wanted me to take some and I practically yelled, "NOOOOOOOO". I think she probably thinks cuck coo! Oh well, I think that's what most of my friends are thinking by now.

Sorry so long. I'm just so excited that I'm doing this challenge.
