No such thing as girl/guy pushups

No one should ever get down on themselves if they can't do a "guy pushup". I got heavily involved in pushups a few years back when I was in training for a fitness certification, and could do upwards of 100 a day...not in a row, over the course of the day, but still, 100 is 100.

Once my certification class ended, I had no real use for these pushups, and stopped doing them. All they gave me was more bulk than I wanted.

Once I got involved with Cathe's workouts, I found that she incorporated pushups. I wasn't too thrilled with doing them again, until I began doing the "girl', or bent knee, style, and discovered something...I was getting a better benefit with bent leg pushups because I was able to concentrate on form and keeping my abs tight.

I honestly don't care what someone may think of me because I am doing bent knee pushups, they provide less stress on my back, and hit the muscles they are supposed to hit.

They work, so I do them, that's all that matters to me. There is a segment in Muscle Max where Cathe has us do pushups in different rep patterns, I do these on my knees, and have yet to finish them without stopping, and I can feel it just fine, thank you very much!!....

Thanks for your input and your attitude, Jerry!!

Too many guys think they have to do the supposed biggest baddest thing or they will have to turn in their "man card." The object of the exercise is results without injury, isn't it?

I do mostly straight leg pushups but I'm switching to bent leg when I feel my back starting to sag or I'm not going low enough to get the intended effect.

The number one reason I stopped going to gyms is because of the very attitude you mention, it made me sick. Looking back, I should probably be appreciative of that attitiude because it led me to home fitness, and therefore, to Cathe, whose workouts challenge me like I have never been challenged at any health club.

If somebody gave me a choice, a free gym membership for life, with the stipulation that I could never do Cathe's workouts again, I would refuse it in a heartbeat, I can't say that about all home fitness instructors, I say it proudly when it comes to Cathe.

Hey Jerry:

For some reason I have never ever been able to do on-the-toes push ups and can only do them on my knees. Now you say that you still derive enormous benefit from these which means I must do too so thanks for validating my inability as ability of a different sort!

I too appreciate your anti-macho-just-because attitude,

Clare :)

Jerry, I have to say I agree with you. At one point I was able to do about 80 on my toes...but I find I like them better on my knees because I can do it with better form and therefore I feel it more. When I first started pushups, I would do them with my thighs on a ball because I could really get good form for the upper body work yet have my core supported.

And it's not about machismo...it's about getting good results, isn't it? Actually, I have found that doing my yoga is great for getting in pushup work without the dread of doing pushups :)

Jerry, thank you for sharing this. It makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one that does push-ups on my knees.
