RE: No salt, sweets, junk food, more water - July 4, 20...
I think everyone has developed their own rules in a way. It started a month ago when Shelley (allwildgirl) wanted to lose her last 5 pounds and came up with the genius idea of starting a challenge so she can stay off sweets and because we were doing it together we would all benefit from it. We are all human so there are days we cheated, but we came back the next day and did it the way we were supposed to.
For the no sweets challenge my rules were basically: follow the American Diabetes Association guidelines for sugar (50g or less of sugar a day), check out another new thing in labels and that was sugar grams (I was surprised when I saw how much sugar a lot of food I consider healthy have e.g. a liquid yogurt smoothie has about 30g of sugar for just 8oz.), fruit is okay as long as it is fresh, without any preservatives and better if eaten with some kind of protein, if you feel the need to cheat do it in moderation and remember not to do it again the next day.
In the middle of the challenge, last month, some of us were starting to substitute our sugar cravings, with salty junk food. So someone suggested to avoid salty snacks for July, but a lot of us wanted to keep checking our sugar intake too. (I think if it was done with salty snacks alone I would've gone back to eating sugar instead of salt so I'm glad we just expanded our original challenge). And others wanted to make sure they drank enough water too. So the challenge includes now all the things you see in the title, plus your own challenges for this month. (Some people are quitting smoking too which is awesome.) The rules for no salty snacks are basically that. Avoid salty snacks and eat healthy food instead. My own rules for this one: avoid canned food or preserved food or eat the low sodium versions, I try to cook with more spices and less salt and of course I read labels to check the sodium content. The RDA for sodium in the US is 2,300mg or less in the UK is 1,600mg or less if you're curious. I hope this helps.
