No Non-diet Soda in Schools...

Hmmm Soda was never allowed in our schools although the cafeteria served its fair share of crap. Even if they served healthy items I probably wouldn't have eaten them anyway. Unlike my mother, I hated fruit and vegetables and didn't acquire a taste for them until I was an adult (asparagus...yum!). I used to love soda but cut it out years ago except for the occasional root/ginger/birch beer and a rare Schweppes gingerale mini can with the <gasp!> ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER!!

I agree with you ladies...take it all out of the school.
I probably drink a soda once a month, and if someone said I couldn't have that my life wouldn't be over.
Now that being said....Don't touch my cup of coffee!!!!grrrrrr...

I think if parents want to allow their children to consume junk, then that's their choice. But educational institutions should not be promoting them whether in vending machines, in the cafeteria or at sporting events. At every single soccer game at my kids' private school, they sell so much candy and soda. The kids are getting messages that it's okay to eat this stuff because the school is indirectly condoning it. I'm an "everything in moderation" parent myself, but I wish the schools would stop sending mixed messages. Another place sending mixed messages is the Y where I work. They have vending machines full of junk, but their philosophy is to enrich the lives of the children and families in our community. Everything seems to boil down to economics. Too bad.

Oh yeah Sooosan...the Y is a great example! Our Y has a pop machine and a candy machine right at the entrance and then two pop machines and two candy/chip machines in the 'game room' where the majority of kids hang out afterschool.

My dd has a diabetic friend and I had taken them to the Y swimming one day. The girl started not feeling well so we needed to get her something to eat and what does she end up having to eat but Dorito's and a juice box out of the machine. :(

To say the least, there could have been Fig Newton's or milk in one of those machines but no.

What's gotten lost in all this is the fact that it was the soda companies that chose to stop selling to schools, which I think is fantastic. Kudos to Bill Clinton for talking them into doing it. Obviously it was gonna happen at some point anyway, so it was great PR for them, but I like to see credit given where it's due.

Clinton says his next project is school food. Has this guy made a complete 180 or what? I remember all the campaign shots of him shoving Big Macs down his throat.........and now he looks great, better than ever.

Lauramax...he had a heart episode after he left office. I don't remember the details, if it was a heart attack or he had by-pass surgery. Whatever it was, it apparently gave him a new lease on life.

....and we wonder why so many children are overweight.

I wasn't even allowed to have soda until I moved out of my parent's house. We didn't have candy or soda offered at school so it wasn't easy to come by. I survived just fine and I had never been overweight. Imagine that.
