No barbells?

I like to buy a few sets of weight workout dvds. Could you tell me which series uses the least barbells? I only have dumbells at home. Will it make very much difference if I didn't use barbells?

Not Cathe and wanted to answer your question.

As far as weight workouts that don't use a barbell, there is Pyramid Upper Body and Cardio and Weights that I know for sure.

However, as long as you have a good selection of dumbbells, you can pretty much do the exact same move with a barbell with dumbbells. When I started with Cathe I only had dumbbells and it went just fine. I eventually bought a barbell set because I wanted to start lifting some pretty heavy weight. Should you decide to eventually purchase a barbell set, here are some suggestions.

1) Walmart- there is a set available at Wal Mart and I believe it is less than $30. However, if you order it online, the shipping charges wind up being more than the set itself so see if you can't buy it at a store.
2) Target- also has a set which I got on sale for $35 (I think it's usually about $50).
3) www.fitness1st.com- Sells the same set that Cathe uses in the Intensity series, the Troy Lite. It sells for $49.95. Even with shipping it comes in at around $80.
4) www.amazon.com- Is selling a barbell set and the shipping last time I checked was only $4.95!!!!

HTH,

Thanks for the post! I've been modifying with dumbells for years, but at this price, I can get a barbell. I'm so excited!!!!!!!!

I thought the Amazon set was a great deal too and purchased it a couple of months ago (it was actually on sale for 14.99!). The lowest weight plate is 8lbs, so the pair of them plus the bar is 20lbs. I went to Play It Again Sports and purchased 2.5lb and 5lb plates for .59 per pound. Still a fantastic bargain as far as I was concerned!

I have almost all of Cathe's videos and have never used a barbell, always modified with dumbbells and it has worked fine for me.

I use dumbells too and they work fine. I will most likely purchase a barbell set forom Walmart or a used sporting goods store, but for now, I'm happy with dumbells. :)

I also used to use dumbbells, but after a while, I really needed a barbell in order to get the most out of my workouts. You'll know when you get to that point.

I bought mine from Target and it's great!

I don't have a barbell either. You can easily use dumbbells. It's never been a problem for me. Only when doing the clean and press, but then I do a substitution. :)

She means 30 lbs TOTAL - plates and the bar itself.

I have problems using dumbbells heavier than 12 lbs. They really hurt my hands - I don't know if it's because I'm not accustomed to it, but it seems the barbell distributes the weight differently, and doesn't hurt.
