NEW Runners check-in - all runners welcome

Hello everyone!

I did my second C25K run of Week 4 today. It was tougher than usual because my legs have been really sore from another program I'm doing (Chalean Extreme), and the humidity was very high today. That is really getting to me! The thought actually crossed my mind today to quit the whole thing, but I talked myself out of that and got in my run, hoorah! I also did Burn Circuit 2 from CLX.

Sygyzy314, congrats on Week 9!! It seems so far away for me!! It's encouraging to read posts from those who are farther along than me to remind me that it's actually doable, ha ha. I have my moments where I wonder if I'll make it, but I just keep moving my legs and I make it through!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Thanks Christine!

I, too, actually had trouble around week 4. I ended up repeating that week before moving on to week 5 and I wasn't doing any other workouts either. I also never thought I'd see this day! :D Keep it up! You WILL make it, I promise! I know what you mean about the humidity! I have asthma and it makes my runs really difficult when it's so humid! I barely got my run in today before the thunderstorms kicked in, but I did!

Now, I'm trying to decide whether to move on to the 8K or 10K program! I have become an addict and a glutton for punishment!

Hey guys,

Today is just going to be a strength day. I changed how I move this week by running early in the morning (4:15am) and then walking 50 minutes to work and 50 minutes home. This means that I have added another 50 minutes of walking to each weekday and I need a while to adjust to it. Yesterday I was really feeling the lack of sleep and was very sore and achy. My body needs the break from running today, but I'll be back tomorrow with C25K.

Have fun!

Life is beautiful

Even when things are more interesting than you might have wished for (career taking an unexpected turn, old baggage from your childhood popping up etc.) there is always your workout to help you feel better. I can pop in a dvd and get all hot and red faced and repeater my troubles away. I am so grateful for Cathe and my check ins, it really helps give me something to look forward to everyday not just once in a while. It sort of propels me through and gives me a goal that I can meet. This afternoon it was SB (Step Blast.) What a serious workout! I had to lower it to no risers for the Blast at the end. 608 calories.

I hope that everybody has had a great day, hugs!!!!

Alisha

Last night's run was beautiful! The humidity was down - finally - and I could breathe! I did CC Vol. 1 with the extra challenge and then repeated challenges 1 & 2, plus a little slow jog up a steep hill to finish. Still only burned 489 cals. I seem to burn fewer cals. on my CC workouts, but that could just be that I'm not that efficient at it yet. I've only been doing CC for a little while.

Taking my DH to Boston for dinner tonight, so will probably miss my run, unless my boss will be nice and let us out of the office early today! {keeping fingers crossed!} He's going to Nantucket for 4 days, so he'll want to get our early. If I can get off early enough, I can get my run in and still have time to get ready for dinner!

Happy Friday everyone!

Thanks Christine!

Tricia, thanks so much for the encouragement! I really needed it!! :) I remember when I was having trouble with Week 4 that you said the same thing happened to you. I'll try and move on to Week 5 next week, but if I have to repeat Week 4, no big deal! I don't have Cardio Coach (yet :p), but I'd love to try that after I complete the 5K training! Either that or on to the 8K or 10K like you! Good luck getting out of your office early today, that would be so nice for a beautiful day like today! *fingers crossed for you* Enjoy dinner tonight!

Alicia, I'm glad you had such a great workout! Getting exercise is so good for the mind, not just the body! I'm happy you find encouragment in our check-in's too. We runners will always be hear to join you and cheer you on. :D

Morningstar, did you get your C25K run in today? How are you doing with the extra walking to and from work? I think it's awesome that you're doing that by the way!

Janis, are you back from vacation yet? We miss you!

Today was my third C25K run from Week 4. I thought about putting it off until tomorrow, but was afraid I wouldn't end up doing it if I did that. So I got outside and much to my surprise, it was so cool and breezy out with NO humidity! YAH! I got in a good run, finished up in my own yard where I chased my dog around a bit (she loved that), and then went inside for a nice shower. I will also be doing Burn Circuit 3 from CLX later on today.

Have a great weekend everyone! Hellos to all! :)

I am having a weird day. I did run this morning, C25K, but only once. Then I came home, had breakfast and was going to get ready for work, when I realized, nope, I'm not going to work today; I'm taking a sick day.

Yesterday was really hard for me, as I was going through a personal situation that left me physically, mentally and emotionally devastated and very angry. I ended up walking out of a meeting at work- and not nicely, either. I sometimes have no patience for certain people in some types of team meetings, and when I was feeling that bad to begin with, it was a bad idea to take part in the meeting in the first place. So, when I go back to work on Monday there will be some fallout to deal with, no doubt.

I wish I was the kind of person that could completely separate my emotional and physical side from my professional side, but I am not good at that. I'm feeling pretty shaky and vulnerable today and really can't handle the fallout yet.

Edited later to add:
I decided to do Boot Camp for the first time in a while. My HRM said I burned 778 calories, but I sincerely doubt it. I think I may need to buy a new one. It's getting really annoying not to be able to trust it.

Hi Runners!

I am home. We had a great time in DC, there is so much to see and do.

Even though I had access to my dh's laptop while we were there, I didn't have time to check in or post, he was using the computer whenever he had a chance to squeeze in work.

I did run while in DC. The humidity was something to wrangle with, I was born/raised in the west, and have lived mostly in dry areas. Holy crap!!! Running in humidity is like running against a wall. I was surprised at how much more effort it requires.

My first run was in the hotel fitness room. I did a 50 min interval run. The next day I ventured outside and did a 40-60 minute loop around the US Capitol down to Lincoln Memorial and back up the Capitol mall and returned to our hotel. I repeated this loop again the next day. Then I took two days off, mostly because of our itinerary and also my knees/hips were aching from all the walking. I did the loop one more day, and was out running when the Marine Corp was running too. That was interesting. My last run was an interval run on the treadmill at our second hotel near Dulles, like Sydney mentioned it stopped at 60 minutes...just stopped. Weird.

Before I left for DC I had only run outside one other time, and NONE with other people running, being amongst others running was inspiring. One morning the sky was completely clear, the sun was just coming up, everything was dewy and clean smelling, there were about 20 other runners out spread over the route, I thought it was so beautiful.

My food choices were pretty good considering, I did have hazelnut gelatto one night after a nice meal in Alexandria (Old Town, near the wharf) and a Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia Ice Cream bar the night before we left, other than that and lots of microwave popcorn, I was able to make mostly healthy nutritious choices.

I miss lifting weights. I swear I already see atrophy. I only did the circuit you gave me once, Morningstar, but I did do a handful of push ups every morning after my run. BTW I loved the circuit, very effective, but I often was short of time, so I had to let it go.

Mstar, it is funny you mentioned running with the pack and HRM, because I had the exact same thought one morning....while slogging through humidity...and noticing how it spiked my heart rate. Sorry that work/home life is such a roller coaster. I am pushy and opinionated too - and I have to agree - others equally promote their viewpoints just as assertively, they just have different strategies that aren't apparent to them or they are blind to them. The subconscious is a wily thing. A personal day/sick day is a great idea, some distance and perspective, or at least a long cozy nap on the couch, is a good thing.

Alisha - we have a lot of wild life too! It is one of the reasons I haven't embarked upon finding running routes in the national forest. Mountain Lions!!! oh my!! well, that and Mexican cartel marijuana growers.

Last night, on our drive home from SMF, we had a large non-domestic cat run across our path, a fox - running about 90 mph, a jack rabbit, a skunk and then an owl!

Christine - you have progressed to week 4!!! That's awesome. Then you add extra workouts to the same day!! Having nice weather makes a huge difference, doesn't it, mostly with moral, but also makes running more enjoyable too.

I love to travel, I think I could be on the road for months at a time, but being home is divine too.

I need to unpack, do laundry, and de-cat fur the house (vacuum). I was going to lift weights this morning, but I think I need a down day. We had a long delay at Chicago Midway. Our plane taxied out, was getting ready to take off, then we heard a rather obnoxious squeek and a malodorous smell came through the a/c vents. We taxied back to the gate, waited while mechanics looked at the plane, de-planed, waited around, then were told they were going to give us a new plane at a new gate...we all had to get back on the first plane to get our stuff, and move over to the new gate. It was chaotic, but I have to say everyone behaved very patiently and orderly. So despite the three hour delay, it wasn't a big deal.

Hi to everyone else!!!

ETA: Oh, btw, morningstar, you're not boring. All I talk about is nutrition and fitness too! LOL. (if I am not talking about it, I am thinking about it even when I am talking about other stuff.)

Janis, I have missed you so much! I'm glad you got in so many runs- and they sound like they were fun runs too! I also am inspired by other runners on the route- they're the only ones I smile at the whole time. I've missed that a bit since I started running at 4:15am- I've yet to see anyone else out there that wasn't drunk. I'm glad you liked the circuit- it's one I do when there are no other options, but it's fun and quick. I agree that running in humidity is really hard, but I think it's much harder than running with a pack- the pack you get used to, the humidity I haven't figured out yet. It's not usually so bad when I run, and Toronto is having an unseasonably non-humid summer, so that helps.

I would like to see a mountain lion one day, but perhaps not on a run and not when I wasn't expecting it. Now, the Mexican maryjane growers, well, I'd probably just run around them, inhaling deeply of course!

Ah- well - see - here in the great state of Cal-i-for-ni-a, the mexican cartel mj growers do not like to see anyone. ANYONE. They shoot on sight, bury you in a shallow grave, and get back to work, no "hi how ya doin" The CAMP helicopters do not set down when they fly over. They do two fly overs in two day successions, on the third day, they go down lower - buzz over the crop, and the fourth day they will only set down if they do not see any one on foot. They will capture and arrest only if they see hand guns. These growers often have heavy artillery. At this point, everyone is in agreement, we need to legalize it just to keep the citizens safe if nothing else.

I did have to be more mindful of my breathing and tempo while running in the humidity, usually it just flows, but in DC it took a few minutes to find the right - rhythm. :)

Mountain lions are amazing and scary!!! HUGE!!! I have seen two. One was at my son's school strolling around the field! The other was laying on a rock about 500 yds away in the forest where I want to run.

I missed you too.:) I was going to tell you, but didn't want to sound too - well - sappy.

You know, it's a funny thing. I've never done any hard drugs, and I never smoked MJ until I was about 28, smoked about 6 over the course of 2-3 years, and that was that. And yet, I think pretty much all drugs should be legal but controlled, taxed all to hell and treated like a social issue rather than a criminal one. Let's take the power away from the dealers and cartels who really wouldn't be able to survive if drugs were legalized and controlled. We came close to legalizing it here, but so far, mj's only legal for medical use.

This morning I did the first workout of Week 3 of C25K. I was definitely out of my comfort zone, and looking for the end of each interval, but I did it twice.

August 8

Good Morning Runners!

This morning's interval run was 40 minutes to Cardio Coach Vol 3. I don't think I have ever run to this Cardio Coach before, I have used the stationery bike and the rowing machine to it, but I don't have a memory of running to it.

I had a great run! I loved it. I noticed that I had a lot more oompha going into the sprints and later the hill climbs than I normally do. I hit this CC hard, and, of course, felt exhilarated at the end. 4.017 miles 39.21 minutes 237k per the hrm. I think the program from "the idiot's guide to heart monitor running" has actually helped, even though I have been somewhat befuddled by my heart rate, I believe the interval runs sandwiched between recovery runs has made a difference in my endurance as well as my pace. My warm up was at 5.8 on the TM, steady was at 6 and sprints were at 8. My heart rate stayed in the 'orange zone' for most of the 40 minutes. Loved loved loved it. (Despite my vigorous sprinting efforts, I never made it to my max heart rate.)

I just finished making blueberry waffles for ds11, later today I am making a blackberry peach pie. Blackberry season has fully arrived! YUMMMMY. Later I am making carnitas, which is really the vehicle for the fresh salsa (pico de gallo) I am going to make. I harvested two pounds of jalapenos yesterday; there is at least one more pound on the bush! I may roast and freeze the rest.

I agree, Morningstar, legalizing all drugs, is definitely the way to go. My dh and I, when we are on long road trips, discuss this topic at length, even the intricacies of how the FDA, BATF, the IRS and Feds would administrate it. More and more I am moving towards libertarian-ism: less government, more personal freedom.

Tomorrow I am going to lift - and lift heavy - I really need it. I still need to put together a rotation for the rest of August. I keep saying I am going to do 4 day split, well, I'll make it a 5 day split by doubling up on legs. I still have a few Cathe dvd's I haven't tried yet, and would like to before Shock Cardio is released, and before I start STS again. I think I'll do the 5day split rotation for 2-3 weeks and then reassess.

While on the plane to and fro I read and then listened to Tom V's success, motivation tips, all were very useful reminders. I need to spend some time writing out my goals and my action plan. At this point, being so close to my goal scale weight, I want to focus on building muscle and unleashing my inner athlete. I know by staying persistent and consistent the last layer of visible fat will be burned off.

Off to shower, and then make pie dough.

Have a great, sunshine-y day.

Janis, I believe I may be envious of someone for the first time in my life... It's something about how you enjoy life and your family and your hobbies and activities.

It's so great to hear everyone's running experiences! Janis, glad you had such a great trip! Me, I would have to stop and walk if I saw Marines coming my way! I would be too embarrassed by how slow I run!

We did end up getting off early on Friday, so I hit the bike path and did my first SS run without C5K! I used a Podrunner download. Must say it was weird, but I had a great run! It was a beautiful day! Made it home in plenty of time to shower, change, put makeup on (which I never do except for special events), feed my kitty and pups and wait for my DH to get home!

Boston was cool, breezy and wonderful! I love it in Boston! A city with real character! Dinner was excellent! Our trip home was a whole other thing! They were doing construction on 93 and 95, so a drive that usually takes us about 50-60 mins, took us about 2 hours last night!

Still, it was all good! Took a day off today and gave my DH the rest of his B-day present, went to see Harry Potter (finally!) and his cake is now in the oven!

Tomorrow is an early day to get down to Niantic Bay/Beach in CT for DH's mini-triathlon!

Have a great night everyone! :D

Oh, Morningstar, thank you...this is unequivocally the nicest words anyone has ever written or spoken to me.:)

Hi Tricia

The Marine corp men were ALL so young I could be their mother!!! When I first saw them, they were warming up and doing calisthenics...I ran by them and not a single solitary one of them looked around, they were completely focused. When I passed them the second time, they were in perfect formation with three lead runners in reflective vests and one bringing up the rear with a walkie-talkie. The first runner in the first row was carrying the marine corp flag. They were running in unison and calling out their march chant. I took one ear bud out so I could listen. Not one service man took notice of the other runners...no sidelong glances or turned heads. I was impressed with the precision....if someone was running that close to me as they were to each other - in front or behind....I would have been annoyed and impatient.

Your trip to Boston sounded fantastic. (well except the long drive home - yikes) Happy bday to your dh and good luck to him tomorrow at the mini-triathalon. Do tell, what did you give him for his birthday! (you cradle robber you! LOL!)

Congrats on your steady state run. I haven't tried any other downloads to run to other than cardio coach. What made Podrunner weird?
