"New Directions Diet" tell me what you think???

Hey everyone!!

A few of our employee's are going on a special diet called "New Directions". It is a diet program created at my hospital by a few doctor's, and I believe a nutritionist(Which is completely shocking in itself). This is a diet program that requires you to be followed by a doctor every week. It mostly consists of 2-3 shakes and 1 regular meal a day, the calories are a STAGGERING 800-900 a day.. and this was for a man!!!!!!!!!!!! I was talking with this person that was on the diet, and he has lost a large amount of weight in a very short time.. and of course no exercise at all..I asked him what his body fat% was before he got started, and what it is now..he never had it checked before he started on the diet.. now it is like 22% or something.I would love to see his percentages of lean muscle mass to body fat ratios!! I am surprised that he has any energy to walk around??

Speaking of muslce wasting... Did anyone see Grey's Anatomy last night????? The lady who was very heavy lost a massive amonut of weight in a short time?? The massive reduction of lean muscle mass...could have caused the heart muscle to be so fragile and weak that a slight slip of the hand during open heart surgery could create a hole in the heart due to muscle wasting..I found that to be very interesting!!!

Does it drive you crazy when people always want a quick fix to the age old problem of weight loss. How ignorant people are when it comes to eating, exercise and weight loss!!! I feel like a broken record when I try to explain the physiological reasons why you can't cut your calories that low, and why weight training 3-4 days per week and cardio 4-5 days per week are a must for optimal weight loss..faster metabloism and muscle growth and development!!! It seems like such simplicity to me..clean up your diet..and work out. Everyone wants a quick fix, esp if they don't have to work at it!!

Arghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! x( x( x( x(

Thanks for listening to my rant!!

Hi, Denise:

Wow, 800-900 calories??? I don't think I'd even be able to get out of bed in the morning! That is just insane. I think it is really unfortunate that even with everything that is known about the human body at this point in time, medical professionals would still promote something like this for weight loss. *We* know they will gain the weight back as soon as they start eating normally again.... very sad.

Take care,
Marie

RE:

First of all, you look fantastic in your new pictures! WOW!

I don't think that NEW DIRECTIONS diet sounds very healthy. Maybe my opinion, but just one meal and two shakes doesn't sound very good to me. Not everyone wants to be strong enough to control what they put in their mouths (looking for a quick fix like pills, etc.) and workout hard so you get alot of saggy looking folks who lost alot of weight and no muscle tone at all. Makes me want to pass out just looking at them. LOL

RE:

I wouldn't be able to get out of bed either.

I watched Grey's Anatomy last night. I thought it was very interesting about the patient that lost that much weight and about her heart being so fragile too. Makes you wonder what else is happening in her body too.

RE:

Charlotte,

Your too sweet! Thanks for the nice compliments!! Your a HOT MAMA yourself sister...WOW!!

The great thing is that people at work are starting to want to know what I am doing to look so good..and they are listening to me..people are actually listening to me..instead of getting that "glassy eyed" look on their faces..I am glad that my personal improvement is encouraging others, and may help get them on their way to a better lifestyle. I love it!!

:) ;-) :D :p :9 :7 :+

RE:

I am glad you got somebody listening to you, and if you can motivate one person than you have accomplished alot! Good for you. You feel good about yourself and maybe you can make someone else feel good about themselves too. Your an inspiration!

Charlotte~~:) :) :)

RE:

RE:

Not only are there those that want a quick-fix or magic pill, but there are those that are out to make an easy, buck. Doctor's or other healthcare professionals are no exception.

Hi Denise... I think everyone is different and some do need more calories than others, I also think some people are so used to alot of calories they panic when something like this is mentioned. I just think as long as you don't go hungry and are getting what your body needs great...
But Denise, really, you don't look like you really need this... you look great :7 ...... Rhonda

RE:

I don't think I could survive on this diet...not only b/c the calories are so low but because only having one meal a day that I can actually CHEW!? Forget it! Chewing is big for me. If I can't chew, I don't feel like I've eaten!

ETA: I have tried the "quick fixes". They don't work! When I finally admitted this to myself I was much more successful in reaching my goals!

HI Denise,

Thanks for your response!

I don't know what shape I am. I think I am pearish but sometimes I feel like a ruler...a thicker ruler!
I am the same height as you are:
I now weigh 130 lbs,
Bust: 36 inches
Waist: 28 inches
Thighs: 23 inches
Hips: 37.5 inches

Thats all I know off hand.Would love to get my waist as tiny as yours. I am short waisted so if Igain any extra weight, thats where it goes. Got any tips?
Thanks again,
Lori

RE:

Rhonda,

Thanks for the compliment, that was very sweet!! I think that you misunderstood what I was saying in my orginal post...I was not and I am not thinking of going on this diet..I think this diet is the most moronic thing I have ever heard of...going down to 800-900 calories a day.. what are people thinking???

:)

RE:

Oh my goodness.. that is an awful diet and I don't know how anyone could stay on a diet like that. I agree that their is no quick fix.. it almost makes me mad when people want a quick fix.. I say it's a lifestyle change and a way of life and not just a hurry up lets get skinny thing.. drives me nuts!

Does anyone else have people say things like "why do you workout so much" or when I mention running a 10K they look at me like I said I wanted to eat bugs or something.. I love working out and enjoy knowing I am doin gsomething good for my body.. what is wrong w/ that?

RE:

Nothing is wrong with us!

People are looking for a quick fix and it drives me crazy! They ask questions and then look at you like you're crazy when you explain that they must diet and exercise. It is a lifetime committment...

I get asked all the time why I work out...I am told that I don't need to lose weight. I tell them that is not the only reason I work out...I work out to stay in shape both physically and mentally...they don't get it. It is very sad...

RE:

I totally agree with you! In fact, just last night I was watching TV and they had the commercial for that Ab Lounge and the woman is talking about how doing the Ab Lounge has made it so that her fat jeans don't fit anymore. Then in TINY letters at the bottom it says "with regular aerobic exercise and a reduced calorie diet" or something to that effect. I say to myself "Exactly, eat right and exercise." But the commercial is so misleading that people probably think they can lose a ton of weight just by working out their abs.
